    UPDATE: The person I mentioned in this video ended up downgrading from the 800 Mbps plan to the 400 Mbps plan, which Xfinity says saves $20 per month. Everything is going well for them so far. The user says there's been no difference in the download speeds, which are more than 200 Mbps over Wi-Fi. My guess is this person was sold an 800 Mbps internet plan even though their older router (owned, not rented) doesn't support those speeds.

    Cable companies often charge more for internet that isn't part of a bundle. They are trying to make up for lost TV subscriptions any way they can.

    Right now I have the X-finity 400 down plan because I got a special price. As soon as my current commitment is up, I'm going to switch to the 75 down plan. That is more than enough for me. I don't need all that speed since I seldom have more than one device running at any given time.

    I use my wired network as much as possible. And unfortunately, even though I have a 10/100/1000 capable wired network, most a/v hardware tops out at 10/100. The Roku Ultra internal wired adapter tops out at 100 Mbps. Never have a problem with any content at this speed. So your correct as to many are overpaying for speed they don’t need. However, with wireless devices faster is normally better. But again at some point there is a level of diminishing return. And in some cases people are paying for internet speeds that their older equipment can’t even provide. Good article!!

    I only need 75 mbps, for I don’t have multiple screens or users. I’ve had no buffering or internet speed issues with streaming, and that includes 4K. My advice is go to the absolute lowest available (75 mbps with Xfinity, for example) and then see if it works. Even if it doesn’t, chances are that the next plan up will.

    You will only know if you try to downgrade. I can’t say for sure. The example I gave in this video was someone who was paying for 800 but only getting 250. After downgrading, still getting 250. The general message is to know what you’re paying for by running a test and don’t pay for speed you don’t need if you want to save money.

    If you have a lot of devices in your home on wi fi you will need a lot of bandwidth

  • @DJaquithFL
    @DJaquithFL11 ай бұрын

    There's a lot of complexity to have a solid and smooth experience streaming. You have to take an account hardware, bandwidth and often how your ISP shares bandwidth with your neighbors. If I were just to throw a generalized statement at the wall. I would have recommend three things: 1. Wired ISP 200Mbps, 2. High quality streaming devices, and 3. CAT-6 or better hardwiring to each TV especially shared TVs. Specifically: My thoughts are to calculate your bandwidth general worst case usage and add at least 25%. If you have 4K TVs, I will probably wouldn't recommend anything under 200 Mbps. In those calculations, you need to assume that everyone in the household is simultaneously watching something on TV and streaming something on their phones, notebook or tablets. It depends upon your full spectrum of uses for your Internet needs, and another problem can be undersizing your bandwidth. Only under ideal situations are you going to obtain your full bandwith from a host of different services. If you're into gaming or have multiple cloud surveillance cameras, then I wouldn't recommend anything under 500Mbps. Ideally If you want as close to a cable like experience as possible then you need to spend some money. Personally, all of our TVs are only hardwired to our network and I use top of the line streaming boxes. Examples include: Roku Ultra, Nvidia Shield Pro and Apple 4K TV. Unfortunately, the cheaper boxes often will drop frames, stutter or in general occasionally have oddball behavior over and in comparison to cheaper devices or built-in streaming devices and TVs.

  • @MichaelSaves

    @@MichaelSaves .. I'm certain that that number is low because of the expense, lack of understanding and it's outside the normal comfort zone of most people to DiY. However, that said the differences are fundamentally huge. The lag and overall responsiveness especially when combined with a more powerful streaming device is instantly noticeable. Tasks like rewinding or fast-forwarding aren't bogged down with buffering or WiFi lag.

    @@MichaelSaves .. Most people don't understand how Wi-Fi works, especially when there are a lot of devices on a network. Most Wi-Fi networks plagued with too many devices ALL having the SAME priorities. Every device on a Wi-Fi network has its turn and then the next device's turn and then the next device's turned and so on until it comes back to your device. Wi-Fi, 6E and in particular Wi-Fi 7 are more capable to handle simultaneous requests and are relatively good about doing that assuming there's no devices under Wi-Fi 6. However, in most homes at best a few devices are Wi-Fi 6 or higher.

    @@pdxwildchildroberts5586 .. There's nothing elite about using CAT 6 cabling or one-time spending $40-$80 more for a less problematic streaming box often with better features. If you're building a new place, tell them to make the runs using CAT 6 instead of Coax cabling. In a lot of homes you can use a MoCA adapter to use your existing Coax "cabling" if they're home run to a box e.g. in a closet or utility room. The problem is those adapters cost $50 to $75 each and require power on both ends; the speed is capped from 1Gbps to 2.5Gbps which for most people shouldn't be a problem.

    Do you have cable TV service and Internet through the same provider? If so, you just cancel the TV service and you still have internet. On your TV, you can use streaming apps to watch content from KZread or other sources. If you don't have a smart TV or the TV you have doesn't support the services you want, you would need to buy a streaming device like a Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick or similar.
