    What? I call Bull. YOU can buy a modem/router combo (gateway) with the exact same spec's that Xfinity uses (Xfinity does NOT manufacture modems/routers). And, a MESH router is far superior to getting coverage throughout the house versus the Xfinity modem/router combo so don't think that an Xfinity router is better/more powerful than a MESH router! "Unlimited"? Yes, get the unlimited" plan!

    Michael, your reommendation of a modem/router combo is good for beginners that want to just plug it in and it work. However, if you live in a home with over 1000 sq. ft, I would recommend getting a WIFI Mesh system. Most Mesh systems are normally set to router mode by default, so the modem itself doesnt need to have a router with it if you already have a mesh system. A mesh system will work with a modem/wifi combo, but that adds an extra network layer and, if you don't turn off the WiFi of the modem/router combo, you will get unneeded extra WiFi noise.

  • @MichaelSaves

    @MichaelSaves

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your comment. 100% agree about mesh systems -- not necessarily 1,000 square feet though. Most gateways can work in homes 2,000 to 2,500 square feet, maybe more with an extender. That's why I didn't go into too much detail on them. But I have played around with a mesh system and would like to do more content on them. I think the mesh systems are easy to set up too. If anyone is reading this and considering one, there are step-by-step instructions using an app for the brand of your mesh system.

    I agree. That's xfinity's intention to keep customers paying extra fees every month in "rental equipment fees." Before you know it, those months turn to into years. Xfinity/Comcast out here making millions just in rental fees 👀. They could easily eliminate equipment fees like some of their competitors. Well I guess it's not personal, just how xfinty chooses to do business.

    Many (most) people use their modem/router for years without ever installing a firmware update! Don't be "worried" that if you go this route that you will have "intermittent internet connectivity issues and other problems". I'm a computer engineer and while I recommend that you update your firmware ~once a year, I have RARELY seen a customer who lost their internet because they didn't update the modem/router firmware. NOTE: you can also have your modem/router (gateway) automatically update, just like the Xfinity equipment, so this whole issue is a moot point.🚫

    It sounds like a good idea, but setting up your own cable modem router can be a bit tricky if you're not technically inclined. Also, the upfront costs of a cable modem router that supports the speed of the very fast Internet service you got from Comcast can be quite high, for example, the Arris G36 is $325 and the Netgear CAX80 is $442.

    I've paid for Xfinity internet for the past five years, I pay for 100mbps and it's never above 30mbps unless I call and complain, then it's around 100mbps for a day or 2, and back to 30. I've called about this no less than a dozen times over the past 2 years... and the last two times they scheduled a technician to come out where I had to be home for a 2-3 hour window, and both times the technician didn't show up, didn't call, didn't care. Comcast is the most awful atrocity of customer service on the planet.

I still have my Motorola Modem and Router, which is my own but I don't use it. I have two TV boxes ( Xi PAM606017269 and TV box Xi PAD200006265) which work fine with Verizon Internet but I have to return them. I have a hard time to get exactly these two models. Can you suggest two TV boxes which are compatible with these and if I get new boxes do I have program them to Xfinity programs? Another question: is it not better to buy boxes for Fios Verizon? )

    I'm in IT and have both rented and owned equipment. I went back to renting. This video is fine and all and yes, you can buy an acceptable modem/router for their services and be perfectly fine. However: if ANYTHING goes wrong and I mean ANYTHING they will just chalk it up to being a problem on your end and or your router/modems problem! Also, good luck if you aren't tech savvy in theses situations! Think of it as insurance paying the monthly equipment fee PLUS after a year or 2 they come out with newer and better equipment. You just have to poke them a bit (I just did that with the new X1!) to get them as they typically don't just send them out. I would recommend people do their research and determine how handy they are instead of just buying their own equipment and thinking they are sticking it to the big corps. Either way good luck. I'm off to do battle with AT&T for a new 5g Microcell tower.

    I wish it were easier to do this with verizon. I have been doing it for Xfinity but I just switched because Verizon's monthly fee for internet is so much lower. That's true even with the $15 a month router fee. But it looks like I'd have to pay about $150 for a compatible router and I can't use the one I was using with xfinity. Oh well, I'm still getting a better deal. I'll keep looking for deals on the routers. Oh and I know that $150 is better than $15 a month in the long run. So if you can swing it, I would recommend it.
