I might suggest a cyclone separator between the hose and the shopvac. You can install it on a 20 gallon plastic bucket and both ease up on the shopvac and also reduce the interruptions as you vacuum up the debris. I use them in my shop and they are invaluable. From New Hampshire, USA.

You may be surprised at what people enjoy watching. It is actually satisfying watching the cleaning and painting process. it shows more of the transformation from a rust bucket derelict to a completed project. Your videos could be a bit longer. Looking a lot better than the previous video. Well done. Veels geluk.

I am sure at some times it seems an overwhelming task, but it takes a while to get a project this huge to make progress. So every little thing that you both do today adds up to the finished end. So stay positive and it will get finished. It does look very nice since you've cleaned and painted. Thumbs Up!

It’s great that you have the opportunity to start your project home from a blank canvas and lay out your floor plan exactly the way you want, if this was my boat I would definitely put a thick layer of spray foam for a good insulation and if possible lay in an in floor heating system from bow to stern, plus a little cast iron coal burner in the living room area on those cold winter nights watching the tele in comfort, good luck and I’m anxious to follow your progress.

I’d have at the very least needle gunned it before painting, preferably taken her out the water and shot blasted back to clean metal before priming and painting. I’ve restored a very old riveted iron narrowboat (1935 Haarland and Wolf Star class butty), I used an ex British Gas Compressor and needle gun with both chisel and needle points. Took weeks of work but once done and cleaned back to bare iron the primer coats went on a treat followed by multiple coats of two part epoxy floor paint on the inside of the hull. Used epoxy floor paint as it’s oil and diesel proof and really really hard wearing. 15 years later and the inside of the hull is still as clean and rust free as the day I finished painting. Lovely old hull you have yourselves….

  • @Tomm9y

Absolutely, it's a waste of effort to paint when in that condition. Also the boat needs a survey to establish condition and hull thickness.

They are hiding the rust with that paint and in a few years it will peel off and have eaten into the hull.

YOU don't needle gun a riveted hull or it will start leaking !! Needs blasting for sure

  • @danbuckman5691

@@howardbeer5214 I spent weeks needle gunning an old riveted iron hull. Then chopping out and replating. We also hot riveted all the new rivets to match the originals. All the footings both sides of a 70ft hull were replaced along with the swim on both sides. When she went back in the water not into single pin hole leak anywhere. So as long as the boats on the hard, needle gunning is 100% fine. I’ve owned / worked on and rebuilt many boats over the years, the oldest being a 100 year old wooden Cornish lugger, that had sunk so I re floated her and got her out onto the hard for rebuilding. Had iron, steel wood and grp boats in my time…

Great work guys. But as other have said, you cant just paint over the rust. It must be converted using rust converter or muriatic acid (the main ingredient in rust remover) from a farm supplier. Must be used before the paint or the hull will continue to rust underneath. Theres no point making it look nice only to find it falls apart around you. Save the heartache and do it right the first time.

I saw your boat on the GU and thought it looked an interesting if daunting prospect. Respect for taking it on; you two are brave!! Those kids who untied her did you a favour as now you know she floats and didn't sink on her journey across the cut and back, so it should be OK to move her, but I'd invest in some bilge pumps as she may spring a leak when you do so. I am sure you will be checking all the steel and iron work before installing any timbers or other internals. Make sure you check out the regs regarding "overplating" before committing to any repairs to the hull.

Hello, you two: uppphhsss - that looks like a lot of work! So I would have sandblasted it and vacuumed everything! It's pretty quick - it probably took me 2 days to do the interior. Well, of course: everyone does it the way they can! Is it not possible to rent or borrow equipment from you? You need a compressor - a small one is enough and a few attachments. The sand for sandblasting can be vacuumed off immediately at the lance - so you can use it again and again - after cleaning! I would have applied paint the same way: sprayed! well, yes: everyone does it like that...... It's always like this: the more effort you have to put in - and the longer it takes - the less fun it is. I looked at your films: a lot of people tried it - only the lower shell, the boat is from one manufacturer - everything else was probably added by other people! How did the water get into the boat? In some places the gaps are thicker: could it be that water came through the sheets from outside? The sheets just lie on top of each other and are only pressed together by the rivets! Have you noticed in which segments there was water? I would check to see why there is water there and whether the rivet connections are in order. Otherwise the boat will constantly leak: it will let water in! Here in Berlin they used to build such prams - there were a lot of small shipyards everywhere. They spread bitumen - a sticky stuff like that - between the iron plates and then riveted it! I would take a closer look at that! Better to look too much than to overlook damage! If the sheets are not on top of each other - there is one place that particularly caught my eye - then the steel sheet and the rivet are susceptible to rust. I suspect the rivet is a different material than the sheet metal! In 2:07 there is a place like this - on the left it looks ok - on the right the gap is larger - there is a place with water at the bottom. I can't tell exactly - it's moving on too quickly... The trailer for the engine looks narrow - just vertical metal sheets. That's probably not enough: you have to fasten the motor and make it adjustable, and also provide a shaft compensation coupling so that the non-aligned shafts of the motor and screw shaft don't wedge themselves, jam and cause damage. well, yes: I think: you already know what you're doing! and if not, I'm happy to help! It remains exciting: I enjoy watching you! Greetings from Berlin!

Propellers have come a long way in the last 20 years. Somewhere in the future, I'd recommend looking into a newer design. Will safe gas (petrol to you I suppose) as well as improve torque. Watching from across the pond to the y'all in the lands of most of my ancestors - that I know of.

Thanks Roy, the engine does look like a good find but will only find out when we get our hands dirty trying to get her serviced and started :) we used a rust converter and Hammerite black paint on the floor of the hull as it’s a paint formulated to be applied directly to rust.
