Imagine being a 15-year-old school drummer in 1982 and seeing your first concert and it’s this guy. He is without a doubt in my eyes, the greatest drummer who ever lived. He once said, performing a Rush show is like running a marathon while doing advanced calculus equations in your head at the same time.

@@jimtatro6550 it is a bit demoralizing as a starting drummer. And sadly I don’t know if there enough practice hours available to even come close with the sheet music. Fun to try though 😁

Neil always gave you MUSIC not just drum banging. He took you on a Historical Journey of drumming. From tribal, to marching band, to military style, to various rock to jazz and swing. His final tribute to the greats there at the end that were his influences. Great reaction. keep it going. Welcome to the Rush Rabbit hole. sooooo many great songs to review.

Thank you for this reaction. I appreciate it. I grew up listening to Rush since the early 80s. I love seeing new people come around to the Rush journey. Unfortunately, my Rush journey is over, but I can relive it through beautiful people like you. I know that people may mock you for being Canadian and not knowing the great Canadian gods of music, but I completely understand. When I was growing up, the radio didn't want to play Rush because they weren't commercial enough. I was insulted every single time. I saw how Rush made their music more commercial to the point to where they lost some of the their fans in the 90s, but then they came back to being the band that we all grew up loving. I welcome you on this journey and I can't wait to see what you react to next. I hope you get to see La Villa Strangiato (the official video) and Xanadu (live Exit Stage Left). Then I believe you will truly understand the heart of the Rush fan.

LOL! Thankfully, I don't have to imagine being there as I am old and saw them on three occasions in '80's, '90's and 2004. Yes, it is so much more dynamic and attractive live, just like all great musicians. You may know that these guys were big sticklers about putting on the best show possible in every performance. Per interviews, Neil had shows where he felt he didn't perform as well as he could have and his comment was that this is one benefit of touring relentlessly. If you have a bad show, you have another chance tomorrow. That being said, I have yet to meet anybody who says they saw them and they were less than awed.

Near the end, When Neil flipped one of his sticks in the air, Niel caught the drum stick the wrong way (With the but end out), But he immediately noticed this, flipped it around with his fingers on one hand and, even after this, he left himself with plenty of time for that next “hit” on the symbols. This is why he is called the professor. He didn’t even panic. He just knew how to get the job done and he did it. Effortlessly. As A side note I am quite sure he triggered the horn sounds with his bass drum hits. Listen, there was no horn “blasts” without a bass drum hit. The ending sequences may have been a section of big band that he triggered on a one-time basis. As an amateur drummer, I want to say Niel “WORKED”. He worked on every drum hit he did. He said this in a few interviews, that he always wanted to be the best he could be. Even in the R40 tour (40 years since the band was established), Neil said “time” was an enemy. But an enemy he would not let get the best of him. His body was going through the natural phase of aging. But that just made Niel work harder. We should all strive to be like Niel. Whether it’s drumming or processing packages at a package processing plant. Do the best you can be and strive for more. That’s what made Niel the professor of his craft. I can’t tell you how the passing of Niel has affected me, But I think, if Niel and I had this conversation (about sadness in his passing), he would say “Just relax and do what you do your best”. And if asked about my own drumming abilities, Niel might say “Always strive to better at what you do. Don’t get lazy and say you have already reached your best. Because your best has yet to come. No Matter what your age.” Niel knew this. He is a model for us all. Look at his writings of Rush’s songs. mostly just “Happy”, and sometimes with a message. There was a lot of analysis of Niel’s lyrics for “The Trees”, about people in society being suppressed and the need to rise above. When asked, Niel replied, and I am paraphrasing here… “It was just a fantasy about Oaks and Maples in the forest”. And my reaction to this was, YES! Thank you Niel. That’s all it was, and I only took it as such. A fun song about some factitious cartoonish characters, about the “Oaks” and the “Maples” in the forest. Just plain good fun. God Rest Niel Peart.

But keep the momentum going one by one and discover the great musical artistry of Rush...solid lead guitar by Alex (most underrated), best bass riffs by Geddy (and vocals), and of course the Professor (Neil) as the best "percussive engineer" and lyricist. Enjoy your journey!!! Thank me later...😉

Thanks, Fernando came from the SPCA, and he is the sweetest cat..he came with some eye issues (that do not affect his vision)..he has drops that he needs whenever his eyes get runny but he is otherwise perfectly healthy. I went in to look at another cat from their site, and my son was with me, and he went straight to Fernando. The cat I went to see completely ignored me, meanwhile, Fernando was being super affectionate to my son, so that is how he ended up here!

I’m Canadian, 53 and when I was younger, the only Rush I listened to was whatever was on the radio. The only insight I heard was Rolling Stone magazine dumping on how they were terrible. I believe they even had a ranking where Neil was the worst lyricist of all time. Young me never gave them much of a listen mostly because I didn’t like Geddy’s voice. Fast forward to about 2010 and me lady bought me a DVD, Live in Rio and watching that was an eye opener as well as an eargasm with La Villa Strangiato which is now my favourite song. Anyway, it’s totally possible to go from not listening to them most of your life to favourite band later in life. I’m just sorry I missed all that time.
