    But the aerodynamics are much worse on the Canadian machine. And the interior doesn’t look as modern. Both absolutely crucial when you’re working in a forest.

    The size and aerodynamics might matter when you are transporting it around with a semitruck or ship or whatever. The company building the log loaders probably doesn't need to do too much maintenance themselves, but they do need to ship the vehicles to the buyer or dealership. So, being able to fit one extra unit onto a ship might look quite attractive.

    Or have been a mechanic themselves this is a way well thought out and designed for easy to get to work with not to mention it's probably easier to assemble during manufacturing.

    ​@@VTX00128they could have also just been the person that does the inspection, I got frustrated trying to inspect all these other machines and decided "you know what, why don't we just make everything that easily accessible so that I can do my damn inspections in less than 30 minutes"

    That's the difference between purpose made and adapted machines. You do make good video's Chase, to the point.You know much more about all thing logging than any general view is there any chance you could do a longer vid on some of the other machines?     Norwegian built Brøyt Machines had a similar solution to the canadian built machines that are shown here. Sadly Brøyt went into a merger with volvo sof some sorts and the style, some of the technologies and sadly most of the service-ability went away not long after the merger. (Brøyt was also the first in europe (maybe even the world) to use electronic controls on the joysticks in an excavator)

    The Eltec is made to be maintainable out in the field. The Volvo looks like it needs a fully equipped shop.

    The volvo is made to run on worksites and then needs to be more compact, the Canadian one looks bigger. Why would you need to lift the whole hood for regular maint? If it is a big job just unbolt the panels... Also I never understood why you prefer to use excavators instead of regular harvesters. Is it the terrain?

    The Cats and Volvo's are hard to work on by design...the factory is throwing a bone to the dealers, and making it so machine owners will take the machine to the dealer for repair. They are big enough now with global markets, that they absolutely do not care about the businesses that run in remote areas. I can afford a new pickup truck, and recently, I purposefully bought a 1994 with a cast-iron inline 6-cylinder specifically because I can work on it myself if I have to. I paid my local mechanic to put new synthetic fluid in the diff and manual transmission even though it cost me $150 more than if I did it myself, but if he retired, I could do it myself if I had to. The whole truck is like that, and I cannot work on the new ones.

    I know what you mean mister, I got a 93 with the 5.8, and I can do everything to it myself. I've done diff swaps, transmission and transfer case has been changed it was an original tower of power truck which I swapped to a 5.8 myself. Simple and easy to work on. You'll never see that from a dealership again! Everything is designed to be brought back to the mechanic so they can charge you 150 plus an hour in labor which is thievery if you ask me!

    Who the hell loads their excavator and drive it to a shop for service? Atleast in Sweden it is mostly mobile service. Biggest reason you cant do shit yourself is because emission regulations have made all engines so complex.

    @@guseks8413 The mobile heavy equipment repair truck always makes sure the work bid is 10% lower than shipping the machine back to the dealer. They are expensive!

    Which one you choose probably depends on what kind of logging job is being done. If it is a smaller job and shorter time or far out in the forest for months at a time.

    For construction the size of the machine often matters. It is not rare to be working in tight spaces and thus why everything needs to be compact. But with that not being as much of an issue in forestry thus the purpose built vs adapted.

    The compact design makes sense for working around buildings. The forestry machine doesn't need to worry about space

    Exactly tell a construction guy that he'll need to make sure and park his excavators and extra width apart so that can swing that entire hood over the top every day for daily checks. Volvo you can do all that standing on the ground from 4 cabinets. They aren't comparing apples to apples, Volvo makes a purpose built foresty exc with walkways around the outside, brackets where the entire top of the engine or DEF system swings out. High straddle road model undercarriage. If they new the full offering of Volvo then this video doesn't make them look to knowledgeable about thier opponents offerings.

    That yellow one is exeption because it's volvo. Dont know much about volvo excavators but when they make cars you don't need to acces engine because there is nothing wrong with it.

    If eltec ever gets into construction equipment they're going to do pretty well in the market. I should also add though they'd only do well if they can find a way to make the machines light enough while still keeping all those features

    Ship that lives at sea vs. boat that comes back to a boathouse with a lift and a railroad into the heated dry shop with 360° scaffolding at the service level and cranes to get things out of the way.

    And some of these companies that run junk equipment or under why they go through mechanics like crazy. Think about that for a second. I'd rather spend the extra 50 or 60 Grand to keep my mechanics happy

    @@suprestoner oh I get ya. I personally would spend the extra also. But the average company has to save where they can. I've always said these things are too damn hard to work on. You need to be a bloody contortionist to fix anything. As we get older it gets harder and harder to do it so your option is to pay someone to do it for you. Now it cost you more because he has a tough place to get into. Make it easy access and you can do more of it yourself and if you need a mechanic your cost is less because there easier to work on.

    Uhh one is designed with things like size, swing, profitability, speed and ease of manufacture in mind another is designed to be robust and easy to work on. One can be worked on by a dealer network all over the world a while another can be worked on by any HD mechanic in the world.

    Volvo is made to not break down and mostly sold places they have good suport teams that know how to fix them. But canada gear looks and must be very old fashion compared to scandinavian logging tech
