Ah the memories. I was in the military before the Pattern 82 kit was issue and I not fondly remember trying to go up a hill that had a crust of glazed snow. We had the older wooden frame snowshoes and they kept sliding on that glazed crust. We ended up having to crawl up the slope by punching through the crust with a fist and pulling ourselves and the loaded snow up. That was exhausting.

I've had some pretty gruelling snowshoe adventures myself, as part of four groups pulling and escorting the sled in the dark up a hill covered in fallen trees and snow. I'm sure you'll agree that what you went through and achieved was very difficult and exhausting, but you wouldn't have missed it for the world. These are fond memories that not alot of people get to experiance. Thanks Sir Ridesalot!

@@gunnerjames1056 That is so true. I'm a lot older now but still enjoy hiking in any season or terrain. I like your handle. I take it that you were a gunner and used the 105mm howitzer? I had a friend in the militia who kept calling his rifle a gun. SO the Sergeant Major took him to another area where an artillery regiment had their 105mm howitzers parked and told them this guy was going to clean them because he liked guns so much but couldn't tell the difference between a gun and a rifle..

@@sirridesalot6652 Yes, my rank was Gunner, and the 105 mm Howitzer was our gun, and the C1A1 FN was our rifle! We also had newbies who got an earfull about a" GUN".

All of these items can be used. If I go hunting, or travel in remote areas, where one might have a vehicle break down or who knows what, these items in the vehicle can help you survive. Just make sure you are getting stuff that's in good condition, and don't be afraid to haggle on the price. Thanks Derek!

I guess it would be similar to the fact that a Brodie helmet net would fit the MK.2 and the MK.3. I was never issued with a winter white helmet or Rucksack cover during the time I was in.

I always found lamp wick made a better harness for the snowshoe as it stayed flexible even when wet v the leather which was hard to use and not very flexible for severe winter conditions.

My many pairs of wooden snowshoes have the lamp wick style of harness, and I agree they are my preferred choice. I've had this pair for over 20 years, as I was trying to build the entire kit I was issued. The price was right on these, leather harness included. I served in the early to mid eighties, and can't remember what type of binding on the snowshoes I was issued back then. Thanks Frank!

They are still widely available at surplus stores or online. Check out st_albert_surplus on ebay. I never had cold feet down to -40 or colder. The neat trick of removing the liners, turning them inside out, and hanging them in the tent before bed, was to be able to knock all the moisture off that had turned to frost overnight. You should get the boots, liners, and insoles. Thanks G 55!

I was determined to find every piece of winter kit I was issued, plus a few extras that came out shortly after I left. It took quite a few years, but once completed, I was happy to add some Canadian military content to the Internet. Thanks Alexander!

I do use some of these items in the cold winter months, and the wool shirt is one of them. It's quite a thick material, and as one of your layers, it really makes a difference. I have ventured out in -50F or worse with the wind, and stayed warm no problem with all the gear on. Thanks TurtleWolf Pack!

I believe I used the same kit I used on my first trip in Army Cadets. The boots were very comfy for me and I liked jacket and pants (But I hate changing my camouflaged winter clothes from home in the cramped bus) besides that, I wasn't used the mask, scarf, or tuke!

Now I'm interested in finding a M1 Snow cover! God, I gotta say....the 1960s-1980s were the gold age for the CAF! But I dislike the media in the 1960s betraying the CAF as weak and betrayed the C1A1 with Quat on Quat "broken Iron sights"

I am not sure where you are in the world Kevin. If you are not in Canada, it could be difficult and expensive. I am able to find pretty much everything in these videos at army surplus, antique stores, malls and shows, as well as gun shows. Ebay, or any other online store is the type of source that can be expensive. Shipping is the worst part of it. When I left, I was only able to keep my boots and beret. I did a switch with another helmet I had in order to keep mine. Thanks Kevin!
