Honestly, as a Canadian here watching your videos with charm over the Canadian content you have, I've been dying to see you cover this topic. I've always found it interesting that our simple little system is now part of British, French, Russian, and other uniform designs today. ESPECIALLY since somewhat ironically... We've ditched it ourselves and gone velcro on our newer uniforms. Solid video man!

Lol. Im Australian and it is starting to be adopted here a bit. Im not a fan never have been. You get X amount no spares on the Smock that has them. Topping that off, a bit of cloth, there is no bit of cloth or Canadian button in the sewing kit.

Until watching your channel I thought these a British design originally. We Canadians often invent things and never mention it to anyone.

Lawt time I was this early Pattern 1958 webing was still in style. Love Canadian style buttons. SO practical. Wish US Forces had adopted this style.

I never really noticed this style of button until I bought a windproof smock copy sold by Varusteleka of Finland, which features only this style of button. It really is a more durable method of attachment.

I found myself here because I have a pair of 5.11 tactical pants with one of these buttons, I like it so much I want to put one on a different pair of pants that has a button that rubs me. Looking at mine the whole strap is sewn down even under the button I was looking for techniques to do this. However after seeing the reasoning for only attaching the strap at the ends I’m now going to do it this way.

Long been interested in those buttons, never seen that early parka. Have you done anything on the Pattern '94 uniform?

Controversial opinion but I prefer classic style 4 hole buttons since 2 slots are more of a pain to reattach due to the special fabric bit

Is there any truth to the rumor that buttons where able to be boiled then eaten in a survival situation?

I replied similarly above, but no. It's a myth but whilst there may have been prototypes/versions tested for that purpose, I don't believe the survival food buttons were ever really a thing (despite the myth that persists). Think about it, the buttons don't dissolve in the wash and even if you aren't using particularly hot water in your personal wash cycles, this would have been problematic with any form of LBD machines in the field laundry services. So no, don't eat the plastic.

i never put gloves in behind the button like you showed. and you normally did not wear gloves when wearing a parka. you had mitts on and there is no way to get the mitts in like you showed in the video. what we did was, dress very very fast!
