Canada, the second largest country in the world that occupies most of the northern part of North America covering the vast land area from the US in the south to the Artic circle in the North. It is the country of enormous distances and rich natural resources. Indigenous people lived in what is now Canada for thousands of years before the first Europeans arrived, they are known as the First Nations and the Inuit people. The first European people to come to Canada arrived between 15,000 and 30,000 years ago across a land bridge that joined Asia and North America. Around 1000 AD the viking explorer, Leif Ericson reached Newfoundland Canada; he tried to establish a settlement but it didn't last. In the early 16th century Europeans started exploring Canada's coast beginning with John Cabot from England between 1534 and 1542 Jaques Cartier made 3 voyages across the Atlantic claiming the land for King Francis the first of France. Cartier had two captured guides to speak the Iroquois word Kanata meaning village. By the 1550s the name Canada began appearing on maps! Parts of Canada were settled by France and parts by Great Britain. In 1605 Port Royal was built in Acadia by the French led by Samuel de Champlain, and 3 years later he started settling Quebec. The French and Aboriginal people collaborated in the vast fur trade economy driven by their demand for beaver pelts in Europe. Outstanding leaders like Jean Talon, Bishop Laval and Count Frontenac built a french empire North America that reached from Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. In the 1700s France and Great Britain battled for control of North America! In 1759 the British defeated the French in the Battle of the plains of Abraham at Quebec City marking the end of France's empire in America. The commanders of both armies, Brigadier James Wolfe and the Marquis de Montcalm were killed leading their troops in battle. Following the war Great Britain renamed the colony the Province of Quebec but the french-speaking Catholic people known as habitats/Canadians strove to to preserve their way of life in the English-speaking Protestant world British Empire. After the American Revolutionary War many people in the new US wanted to stay loyal to Britain! Thousands came north to Canada and settled in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. During the war of 1812 the US tried to conquer Canada but were defeated. In 1867 the province of Canada was joined by the two other British colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia though Confederation forming a self-governing entity named Canada. Canadian soldiers fought in WW1 for the British Empire; more Canadians died in this war than any other war! Canada became better known as a country after it's success in the capturing of i--my bridge from the Germans and France. In 1917 women were given the right to vote by the end of the war partly because of the help they gave making weapons while the men fought in Europe. In 1931 Canada became fully independent then the Government of Canada made all decisions about Canada! The British Parliament passed the statue of Westminster in 1931, which acknowledged Canada as a co-equal with the UK and the other Commonwealth realms. It was a crucial step in the development of Canada as a separate state in that it provided complete legislative autonomy from the parliament of the UK. The Canadian economy boomed during the WW2 as it's industries manufactured military material for Canada, Britain, China and the Soviet Union despite another Conscription crisis in Quebec in 1994. Canada finished the war with a large army and strong economy. In the 1960s the quiet Revolution took place in Quebec overthrowing the old establishment which centered on the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Quebec and led to modernizing of economy in the same period Canada adopted the maple leaf flag although not without debate and misgivings among large number of English Canadian Society. In 1991 the Canadian House of Commons and Senate requesting that the British Parliment encat a package of constitutional amendments which would end the British Parliament to legislate for Canada and would create an entirely Canadian process for constitutional amendments.

@whitenigga - Canada is a Monarchy in its own right but as a past British colony its citizens were subjects of the British Monarch . Its just tradition now in Canada. The British Monarchs of course have no real power in the governance of the country. I don't know any Canadians who would consider themselves to be or feel to be British. Canadians are usually very proud to be Canadian.

This is mostly for reasons regarding heritage and traditions put in place by the British. A lot of former colonies still do this like Australia and South Africa.

@whitenigga3506 No....we don't feel as british citizens, mostly french canadians like me. Contrary to Americans who took their independance, us, Canadians, were forsaken by mother land - United Kingdom - in 1867 but we are still part of Commonwealth. This is our only way to feel not as Americans by keeping the old british way. Canada never took its independance. But by the same time, today, we do not feel as british citizens. You are right, the british monarch is our monarch by right. But this power is only symbolically. Nobody in Comonwealth feel today as british citizens.

I made myself watch it. I’m trying to learn about where the deep seated hatred comes from that some First Nations nurture in their own hearts 💕 and minds towards the white people which I don’t feel from the whites towards the Natives,and why they so carefully pass it on to their children. I didn’t grow up here in Canada 🇨🇦 so I want to learn and try to understand this problem from both sides you know. There just has to be a reason why the hatred won’t ever go away. What is it?

hanane shaban Native don’t own the land. Never did. They inhabited it, while warring with other tribes to gain land. They colonized against other tribes; interracial. And much of the land had not been discovered or claimed. So with no country and land up for grabs, the colonization was initially mutual and legit. The white man never did anything the Natives didn’t do for gaining land too. It was the way of the warrior and the world really at the time. Now that we understand history- and see it in all its imperfections... the Aboriginal people might also be just as thankful for the good things that came from Colonization instead of focusing on the evil and mistakes of it. We have done that and aim to repair many problems which extend from evils of the past. Truly... had Europeans not come to Canada, or America... the great evil of Hitler and other White men might have conquered and enslaved the Native population eventually. Understand and consider the blessing of freedom you now have also is because of that colonization too. See the blessing and stop focusing on divisiveness. If WW2 was lost and probably would have if no America or Canada existed... the entrapment into true slavery and an evil regime would be likely even now. Stop trying to make this only about Natives Land when in truth it wasn’t. Nomadic and Settlements with wars over land in your peoples, was a practice and a fear. It wasn’t like civil wars... it was like colonization over other tribes and families. Colonization was a norm of that time and the aim of it should have been to do things peaceful. We don’t undo the past. We don’t disregard the blessings we have now and the land claims now. We live in and amongst them with all the blessings as well as all the painful reminders of where we all Came from. God bless the Native people. And the Europeans. God bless Canada. And thank Him for the freedoms you now enjoy and the health benefits despite diseases brought. Much more good and extended life is also a result of the European settlement here. Stop thinking this was the Native Land peacefully settled. The Natives fought for it with blood over others who weren’t white. Please read an expert of facts... What we know about the Mesoamericans comes partly from direct documentary evidence, for theirs was a literate society. Admittedly we don’t know a lot about human life in pre-contact Canada because literacy didn’t arrive until the Europeans, and petroglyphs don’t tell us much. The historical record in these parts thus begins with documents like the 18,000-page Jesuit Relations (1632-1673) based on the reports of Roman Catholic missionary priests. While these and other writings were undoubtedly tainted with ethnocentric and evangelical bias, they consistently and comprehensively report that Canada’s original inhabitants demeaned their foes using vicious quasi-racial stereotypes (from coast to coast); mutilated, tortured to death, and cannibalized enemies (prevalent in southern Ontario and Quebec); enslaved members of neighbouring groups (common among West coast tribes); massacred competitors for land and resources (widespread on the Prairies); and exterminated entire ethnic groups (as in the genocidal annihilation of almost all the Huron by the Iroquois in 1649). In short, contrary to the idyllic picture painted by Professor Sinclair’s essay and the RRCAP, the preponderance of scientific evidence, as opposed to tales told around eons of campfires, indicates Canada’s first immigrants acted just as beastly as the rest of the human family.

The problem is, to believe this narrative requires cherry-picking from those Jesuit accounts and continuing to dismiss the knowledge and experiences of Indigenous people (inc. authors and scholars) today. If accounts of Indigenous people (eg. Senator Sinclair) seem out of step with what you've learned before, consider the fact that Indigneous peoples were prevented by the Government of Canada and Indian Agents from leaving reserves without permission, acquiring legal representation, voting, organizing in groups, or practicing traditional cermonies until the 1950s. Generations of children were forcibly removed from their families, prevented from practicing their languages or cultures and abused. (By the way, there are written accounts from the perspective of Canada to back all this up, if that's what you require to believe something is true.) The Canadian Government did whatever it could to prevent Indigenous voices from being heard, and stereotypes have been circulated to fill the gaps. Moving forward peacefully requires letting go of harmful stereotypes, recognizing there are truths that have been hidden from the general public for generations, and learning to listen to those who are now speaking out.
