What are Canada’s Provinces and Territories?: Names of Canadian Provinces, Territories, and Cities!

🇨🇦 How much do you know about places in Canada? Did you know that Canada is divided into 13 provinces and territories? Do you know the names of Canadian provinces and territories along with their capital cities? In today’s English lesson you will learn the names of places in Canada and enjoy gaining knowledge about Canadian geography and culture.
As we travel around the map of Canada, you’ll learn the names of the Canadian provinces and territories. You will also learn how to pronounce the names of their capital cities, and other important places. In addition to teaching you how to pronounce the names of places in Canada, this lesson will also teach you about the differences between Canada’s territories and provinces.
What are Canada’s Territories and the names of their capital cities?:
Yukon - Whitehorse
Northwest Territories - Yellowknife
Nunavut - Iqaluit
*Video correction:
My pronunciation of Nunavut in this video has been corrected by many and it seems it should pronounced like 'Noon - a - vut', not 'Nun - a -vut'... despite what I learned in school when it first became a territory 😅.
What are Canada’s Provinces and the names of their capital cities?:
British Columbia (BC) - Victoria
Alberta - Edmonton
Saskatchewan - Regina
Manitoba - Winnipeg
Ontario - Toronto
Quebec - Quebec City
Newfoundland and Labrador - St. John’s
New Brunswick - Fredericton
Prince Edward Island (PEI) - Charlottetown
Nova Scotia - Halifax
* The capital of Canada is Ottawa. Ottawa is Ontario.
By the end of today’s English lesson you will have learned how to pronounce Canadian provinces and territories and cities to help you speak like a Canadian and sound like a native English speaker. Thank you for watching, “What are Canada’s Provinces and Territories?: Names of Canadian Provinces, Territories, and Cities!” I hope you’ll enjoy learning about Canadian places and that in the future you will be able to travel to Canada and visit some of our provinces and territories for yourself. Good luck with your English studies!

I loved yours video but I would make a little correction about the maritimes provinces. Newfoundland and Labrador isn’t included in the Maritime provinces. When we refer all 4 provinces we’d say the Atlantic provinces. The maritimes are only NB, PEI and NS. The easiest way to remember that difference is simply coming back from the time NL entered late into Canada in 1949. Before it was still a British colony. That’s also why it’s the only province who still has a territories within their frontier, which is Labrador and territories of Inuit on the tip of Labrador. Also Nunavut have 4 official language. French, english ,inuktitut and inuinnaqtun. Nunavut means out land and Iqualuit means place with lots of fishes.

Hi Jen, Yes, I’ve seen this lesson several times, because I keep forgetting the provinces and their capitals. I need to memorize them. This is a very useful lesson for me, thank you 🙏🏻. The Netherlands 🇳🇱 has twelve provinces. One of them is special, because it’s actually the bodem of the North Sea. We drained the water in the past and it has become land. It’s called a ‘polder’. The province Flevoland is such a polder. In the past it was part of the North Sea, also named; Zuiderzee. But then the Dutch people made a dike between the North Sea and the Zuiderzee called; Afsluitdijk. It became a big lake called; IJsselmeer. After they drained the water in the South of that lake, it became a province called; Flevoland. And later on the made another polder called; Noordoostpolder that became part of the province Flevoland. Also the reason they called Holland the Netherlands, because the land is under the Sea level. If we don’t maintain our dikes, the land would be overflown by the sea 🌊…

Jen, I'm really excited to see your map of Canada. It brings back vivid memories of the past. I know the provinces of Quebec, I worked for a while in Schefferville three km from Labrador province, and after coming back from Montreal where I lived for two years, I´ve visited Ontario, and twice the cities of Vancouver and the beautiful Victoria city driving a rented car from Seattle USA, to Vancouver and from there a ferry through the strait of Georgia to Sidney and driving to Victoria … 🚗🚤 Spain is divided into 17 autonomous regions called “Comunidades Autonomas”, plus two Autonomous Cities “Ceuta and Melilla” located in Spanish territory in North Africa. Each Community has its capital city, and they are divided into one or several provinces. The community of Madrid has only one province, called Madrid. Each community has a representative, called the President of the Community. The city of Madrid is also the Capital of Spain. Thanks for your cool lesson. 👏🏼

I found J.J. McCullough’s channel a while back, and thanks to his videos and yours, my knowledge about Canada is skyrocketing now! It’s fascinating yet hard to imagine how life can be in the northern territories...must be tremendously beautiful but awfully cold! Japan is a tiny country, but our territory is divided into 47 prefectures, and I sometimes have a hard time recalling the positioning and capital city names of the prefectures I’ve never been to. 🧐

Thanks for your comment and for sharing about Japan 🤗. I've seen a few of JJ's videos. He has a very strong Canadian accent and some interesting opinions about our country 😅🇨🇦. A friend of mine from university is working as a lawyer in Nunavut. He says that it's really pretty and taxes are the lowest there than anywhere in the whole country so he's happy. Although he sometimes misses life in the Six, he is able to see the Northern Lights some nights. ❄️ It makes me feel better to know that even though you're Japanese, its tough for you to remember all the prefectures. I've tried so hard to remember them all, but I can only remember about half 😅. Which prefecture are you from? I lived in Tochigi for four years and loved it so much! 🐒 ⛩ 🇯🇵

I think many Japanese school kids would envy Canadian children for not having to remember that many prefectures in geography class. You lived in Tochigi for four years!? Wow, that's great! Thanks for your comment and question, Rafiq 🤗 When talking about the size of our countries you can say, "My country is one tenth the size of Canada (in terms of land)." The last part is optional if you want to emphasize the fact that you're talking about land size as opposed to population size.😉 In addition to being colder and less populated than the provinces, territories also have lower taxes and don't have a 'provincial' style government that would allow them to have more power to make their own laws etc. The federal government has more control over the territories than they do the provinces. 🇨🇦

My answer In Sudan, we don't have territories, provinces, or prefectures. We only use states, districts, and cities. Sudan is divided into 18 states which in turn are further divided into 133 districts. For example One of these states is Gezira. The capital of Gezira is Wad Medani. I live in Wad Medani. ............................................................................................... Thank you my great teacher JeN. It's a big lesson, I learned a lot about Canada, and loved it. This lesson is going to improve our vocabularies as well. God bless you.

Informative video. However, you have the incorrect pronunciation of Iqaluit, and Newfoundland and Labrador is not part of of the Maritime provinces. NL is considered an Atlantic province. The Maritime provinces include New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI.

  • @JeNsJyugyou

    @JeNsJyugyou

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi Kathryn 😎 Thanks for your comment and feedback. 🙂 Now I'm curious as to how to pronounce Iqaluit? I pronounced Iqaluit the same as I've always heard it pronounced by people I talk with and reporters on TV (Ick-wa-loot?). Iqaluit isn't really an English word though, so we could all be slightly mistaken. 🇨🇦 As for Atlantic Canada, around the 7:27 point in this video, I think what I was trying to say wasn't communicated clearly.😅 Sorry about that.✨ Technically the word, 'maritime' is an adjective meaning coastal or connected to the sea. So in that sense Newfoundland and Labrador is connected to the sea. But in Canada, as you know and pointed out, the The Maritimes includes Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, and does not include Newfoundland and Labrador. The difference is all in the capitalization of the word as a proper noun (Maritime), rather than a lower-case letter as an adjective (maritime). 🤗

Excellent article on the 3 Canadian territories and 10 provinces. I was fortunate and lucky to study in Toronto (2009 - 2010) and learned a lot about Canadian culture. And to this day I know how to locate all of them on the map, including the name of the capitals. I am a Brazilian citizen and here we currently have 26 states and a Federal District, thus called the capital Brasília, which is located in the central plateau of Brazil, within the State of Goiás. Brazil. My country is also very big with about 8,517,000 km² against Canada's 9,984,000 km². I leave here my most sincere greetings to the people of Canada, where I have made many friends and miss them. P.S.: My ears thank you for your clean and clear pronunciation.

An easy two line mnemonic verse (seemingly inspired by the famous Roy G Biv mnemonic) for this is: Ynn N Princeedward' Basmoq N Nova' which are the initials/first parts of: Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia. Note that Ynn (which is pronounced "in") contains all three territories, while Ynn N Princeedward' contains all of what can be called the "northern row" and Basmoq N Nova' contains all of what can be called the southern row. Note also that each line of the mnemonic follows certain rules that make recalling them correctly rather easy. First, each line is constrained to contain exactly five syllables. The line must stretch from coast to coast. The territories and provinces are represented by their initials unless they are at the end of a line, in which case it is represented by the first few syllables of its full name with spaces removed. All members of the northern row, except Prince Edward Island, include, in their mainlands, part of the Arctic, defined as north of the sixtieth parallel and all members of the southern row, except Nova Scotia, share a land border with the United States. This mnemonic is the Canadian part of the well-known (or at least known) "Woc An Tl Ma Flor'" mnemonic for all the states, divisions, and regions of the US, and all the provinces and territories of Canada. Here is a link to an article that explains the Woc An Tl Ma Flor mnemonic, that you can read for free and without registering: bartshmatthew.medium.com/easily-recall-the-fifty-states-and-nine-divisions-of-the-united-states-and-the-thirteen-e56881c38146

@@JeNsJyugyou I'm glad you like it. Do you already know by heart the positions and names of the thirteen Provinces and Territories of Canada? I would guess that making a video about them would work well to fix them in your mind. But if not, have you thought about using my mnemonic to do the trick? And do you know the names and positions (and Divisions) of the fifty States of the US? Again, if not, how about memorizing one or more Divisions of the US using my mnemonic. I know it worked for me, but I am the creator. I want to know whether it works for others.
