    Excellent advice. Extra $$$ if you need it. Also, depending on your MOS, other units under the same chain of command may need you for their mission, if they are on the same command, and your command allows it, you may be able to put in more time for $$$ and retirement points.

    I'm not sure how often this happens but I have heard of people that will request transfer to a deploying unit to get extra points for going on deployment. Deployment is great for points because not only do you get bonus points for being deployed, it reduces the retirement age of your pension by 2 days for every day you are deployed or on deployment training and this doesn't officially end till you are back on standard reserve duty. During the Iraq/Afgan war, it wasn't uncommon for reserve/guard to rack up 3 or even 4 years of deployment over the 12 years we actively deploying reserve units over there. This only can be done so often and only if your current unit haven't deployed in so long.

    I am an AGR EN 1LT. Currently a BDE HHC XO. AGR is meant to be a permanent active duty status, and that is your career. The first 3 year tour is technically probationary. You have to apply for it to HRC and it's fairly selective depending on where you fall on the OML and how much they need your mos/rank somewhere. We are active duty within the reserve component. The component is the only difference between us and what you'd normally think of when someone says Active Duty. Move every 3 years, free Tricare, etc. ADOS tours are normally 6 months to a year and are easily volunteered for at your unit and do come with active duty benefits, as do any active duty orders > 30 days, for that time. You'll just be at your unit, no PCSing or anything like that. This is what soldiers often ask for when they need more money or lost their jobs, etc. Making up drills/ATs with another unit is called RST. Ward, let me know if you have any questions about AGR, perhaps for a future video on it or if you're just curious.

    @@picochily you can be AGR enlsited, you have to have e4 first and if e4 an LOR from first O4 or higher in yohr CoC. Alex Murray being away from family is going to be tough, and being treated like a trainee is also going to be tough, I don’t know what civilian job you have but you’re probably a very capable individual, being constantly micromanaged will be disheartening. After basic training, you don’t get treated like a trainee anymore. I’m in the NG and personally I don’t like it, but that’s just me, last drill weekend on Sunday, aside from a fitness test in the morning, the only productive thing I did was sign a single piece of paper and have lunch, I sat down for 8 hours straight. Waste of my time, 1.5 hour round trip drive for nothing. On the Saturday before that, we did riot control for 3 hours and another hour of PowerPoint slides, the other 4 hours, we sat around, getting issued gear, and then returning the gear, and just waiting to get released. Not very exciting. I don’t know if you have a college degree, if you don’t you’d start out as a private.

    Alex Murray 3 years guard and 5 Inactive reserves? Is your training OSUT? By the way before I forget, the last 2 weeks of AIT is not actual training, it’s cleaning, turning in gear, prepping for graduation, so keep that in mind when you’re thinking about the next 20 weeks ahead of you, or however long your training is. If your training is not OSUT, then you will go to BCT wherever, and then your AIT is in a different place than your BCT, meaning, if your training is NOT OSUT, then you get dorms and more privileges, it will feel like a college sort of, my training was OSUT I hated it.

    Hey Matt. I have not held a civilian job since getting back from AIT last march. I immediately volunteered to work at the PPE warehouse that was created for corona response (ados). Then I applied for a technician job which I got. It's kind of funny, my recruiter really oversold the "part time" aspect of the NG. Yet he himself obviously made the guard his full career, and I planned to do the exact same thing from the beginning. I put my mind to it and it has worked out great. I don't know why people don't talk about it, because the national guard is absolutely a viable full time career if you want it to be.

After that, they consider your preferences for your next duty location and send you where they want, except now you can't decline unless you want to go back to drill status.

    Los Santos State Troopers Clan You’re training is OSUT, telling you about my OSUT experience, it’s not very fun, you get treated like you’re in BCT even in AIT, less privileges like only get passes on Sunday/holidays. I wouldn’t imagine training is going to be very fun during this pandemic. And you’re in the same barracks with the same cadre the entire time in OSUT, telling you right now people are going to talk loudly 30 min up to an hour after lights out, so be prepared to miss an hour of sleep every night. Well in red phase people might be quiet. After red phase it gets annoying because people get comfortable and start talking non stop, but you might not find it that annoying. In gold phase, A couple people on a fire guard shift made a train of people and walked around the barracks singing “you got to wake up you got to wake up for fireguard, chuggah chuggah....” at like 1AM you can tell people to shut up and be quiet, but you have no authority. • @connorsmith9464

    @connorsmith9464

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes. Not totally sure of the system in the reserves but for active duty there is a maximum time in grade for each rank. If you reach that time in grade and haven't been picked up for promotion, you will be (honorably) discharged. This is slightly more common for officers than enlisted. For enlisted, once you make Staff Sergeant you're basically allowed to stay at that rank for the remainder of your 20 years if you refuse to promote or never pass a board. For officers, if you don't make Major on your third look (about 11 years in), your career is effectively over. That said, at that point you are usually still free to resign your commission, enlist, and finish the remainder of your career as an NCO if the pension is your primary reason for staying in. Also, years in service usually count towards retirement for federal jobs.

    Can you deploy with other units in the reserve? I hear people talk about it but I dont know how it works.

    Definitely, if they have a need for your MOS and your commander is willing to let you go for a year you can absolutely go on title 10-Just find a unit that is mobilizing and talk to their command and staff, or you can look on Tour of Duty-you'll need a CAC reader tho.

    Anyone know if you can do AGR right out of basic training? I’m going to be moving to a new state right after training and I’m going into a police department, so it’ll take me at least 6 months to actually get into an academy down there, so might not be bad to consider AGR instead of a retail job or something while I get settled in.

    See my previous comment. You can likely do an ADOS tour until the academy. For enlisted AGR you have to be at least e4 and if e4 need an LOR from the first O4 or higher in your CoC. Also. As I said in my previous comment, AGR is full time, for your whole career in theory.

    You can get put on ADOS orders right off the bat potentially depending on what's going on in your state. You will have to spend a certain amount time working towards getting an AGR job, but you can do it if you put your mind to it. There are also "dual status technician " jobs you can apply to. Once you get to your unit, express how badly you want to make the national guard your full time career. I came back from AIT on march 17th and went right to work on ADOS at the PPE distribution warehouse (because of corona). I then applied to be a technician and I got the job. I haven't worked a civilian job since joining the guard, nor do I plan to.

    That depends on what job is being advertised and how well you interview, but yes it is possible.
