From Active Duty to Guard or Reserve | Transition Secret

In this video were are going to discuss two routes for staying in the military directly after active duty. You can do this via the Army/Air National Guard or the military reserves.
Some great reasons to go from active duty to national guard are as follows:
-You want to serve local to your home of record (or a specific area)
-You want to get a new MOS (military occupational specialty)
-You want to take advantage of a national guard (state specific) education benefits
-You’re ok with the one weekend a month, two weeks a year schedule
-You want to take advantage of guard bumming (state activation, deployments, schools, etc)
Some great reasons to continue serving in the reserves:
-Going from active duty to the reserves can be a relatively seamless transition
-You don’t want to change your MOS
-You want to stay in your branch (this mostly applies to Navy, Marines and Coast Guard as crossing over may require relearning rank structure and culture)
-You live near a reserve base or aren’t leaving the area of your last duty station
BUT, the greatest reason of all, NO commitment!
For those in their first contract, after 4 or 5 years of active duty, you will still have an IRR obligation. Within your IRR obligation, you have the ability to effectively ‘try out’ the reserves to see if you like it. At any point in time, you have the ability to drop back to the IRR with no consequences.
At the end of the day, both are great options depending on what you’re looking for. Both allow you to keep serving and build federal time, both allow you to maintain adventure and travel/deployment opportunities (for better or worse) and both enable you to take advantage of healthcare needs and other insurances.
One of the biggest differences that MUST be pointed out is that if you go to the national guard - you will have a SIX YEAR COMMITMENT.
Compare that to utilizing your already existing IRR obligation to try out the reserves in a branch and job you’re already familiar with with no obligation.
My recommendation and strategic play in this if you are considering keeping your foot in the door after active duty is to first spend some time in the reserves. Take advantage of the no obligation service and focus on school, a new career or whatever you left active duty to work on.
At the point you’ve completed school or gotten settled into a career, you’ve likely made up your mind about continuing service. At this point, you’re more informed and know more about the guard/reserve life.
You can now decide between getting out entirely, staying reserves or moving over to the guard without getting stuck in a 6 year contract.

Damn, trying out the reserves with no obligation to stay is valuable information. Never been told that, honestly think nobody in my shop even knows that. I'm 14 months out before separation and not sure what direction to choose. Thanks for the info.

My friend is currently joining the army active duty he leaves for basic training in a few months. They’re waiting for him to finish school so I believe he’s in the DEP but don’t know for sure. he’s already gone to meps sworn in and signed the first half of his paperwork. his recruiter told him to take the first job they offer him which I think was arms combat. He doesn’t want the combat job or to be sent to see real combat and his recruiter told him the only way to amend/change his contract would be if he left school early basically now. since he hasn’t shipped to basic yet what are his options? Can he switch his contract from active duty to reserves or other options before he returns to meps and ships out?

Just a little note on your vid, in the reserves, they have no (or very very little) combat arms MOS. So you will more than likely have to change mos if your transitioning there as a combat arms active duty.

Very true. For some reason the army reserves gave most combat jobs to the guard. But if you're not in the army or looking for combat jobs, you'll be alright in reserves.

I'm conflicted between NG and Reserves (Reserves are giving me a higher rank but rank is just vanity if you are part time). If you served 4 years AD that means you need 16 years of Reserve to retire? And you can start collecting at 56 instead of 60?

  • @jasonburds

    @jasonburds

    Жыл бұрын

Ya, rank doesn't mean a ton. I'd go by job and convenience. Not exactly. The way I understand it is it's still 60 years old unless you bring that down with deployments. Traditional AD doesn't count against that clock.

I’m infantry in the army but I want to do the reserves because of the no obligation. How do I go about doing that? I don’t want to join the national guard and be under contract for 6 years. I don’t mind changing my mos to be in the reserves

You can start having a conversation with a career planner (though, they might push you active) or better yet a prior service recruiter. Tell them exactly what you want - to continue drilling while in the IRR and not sign an additional contract with commitment beyond your existing commitment to IRR service. This is something you can/should do 6 months out from eas. If you're earlier than that, you can still chat, but I don't think they can do anything for you that early.

If you're in the Army or Air Force, you can take steps to prepare for what's called 'palace chasing'. Look it up - basically can apply to drop active duty for a guard/reserve unit. You won't be eligible until you've completed two thirds of your contract though. So start preparing now by being a complete stud. Out perform everyone and build your reputation. The better your reputation, the more likely you are to get what you ask for.

Not at all. Changing to guard or reserves at 4, 8, 12... whatever year is a great way to get a retirement. You just wont be eligible for an active duty retirement if you don't do 20 years of active duty though.

Some states (territory in my case) will provide the state benefits for education if you are a veteran just like a person who’s only been in the guard and is not a veteran. Whereas someone who’s only been in the reserve and isn’t a veteran, will not get the same benefits

  • @jasonburds

Interesting. That kinda makes sense. The state has a relationship with their guard, they want to incentivize people to join their guard and not go reserves maybe?

I’ve e been out of active duty for about a year now…in a sick way I kinda miss it. Was thinking about joining the gaurd or reserves. I think politics is keeping me away though. I see some guys not going back in for that reason. Idk though. What’s your take on that? Also Would I loose my benefits like post 9/11 if I did re up part time? Why did you completely get out of the military? (If you don’t mind sharing)

  • @jasonburds

    @jasonburds

    2 жыл бұрын

I think we'll always miss parts of it. If you left after your first contract, you can give it a try while you're in the IRR with no additional obligation. I wouldn't jump to the guard until you try that first. It won't impact your benefits at all. However, if you got a rating you will have a debt for the days you drill (you can't get double paid). Not a big deal, that's the only thing I know it'll impact though. I'm going to make a video on my story at some point, but it came down to family. I have a wife and kid now and the juice was no longer worth the squeeze.

It's not really a matter of probability. Do you qualify based on your tests scores? Are there any openings? Then go sign up. If you don't qualify - study harder and take the test again. If there aren't any openings - go with air force reserves or the air/army guard. Go wherever you can get the job you want. Probability for those that qualify, are patient and willing to put in the work to get the job they want - 100%.
