Can You Use E10 Unleaded Fuel In Your STIHL Chainsaws And Small Engines?

Can you use E10 fuel in your garden machinery? James and Ryan answer the question on whether you can use E10 fuel in your STIHL chainsaw.
This video is part one of two videos where we will be comparing E10 fuel against STIHL MotoMix. STIHL MotoMix is an optimised 1:50 premixed fuel for all STIHL engines. The patented fuel formula and STIHL HP Ultra engine oil ensure maximum performance and offer a consistent level of protection for the internal components. In addition to ease of handling and environmental benefits, three key aspects are at the centre of STIHL fuels - people, machines and the environment.
James and Ryan use STIHL chainsaws to compare the two fuels against one another. We will be releasing part two of this experiment in 6 months time from this videos upload date.

    I just avoid E10 completely and fill up with premium E5 (or ethanol free at certain garages), I'd personally use the motomix to winterize but i find that it's not cost efficient to run constantly throughout the gardening season... But yeah, motomix is gonna win this one!

    We always advise to buy it from a busy garage and defo not a slow turnover garage as that is asking for trouble. Mr Stihl says 30 days so 30 days it is 😂 It’s a bit like Motomix lasting 5 years, tbh it could well last longer, but they have to put a realistic time frame on it 👍🏼

    Aspen 2 and motomix are exactly the same. I had to retune all the carburetors when switching over to these products as the tools bogged down and would not rev. I recommend using e5 and oil mix during the seson then winterising with one of these premixes.

    From my experience, any saw or small engine should never be stored longer than 30 days with 10% ethanol fuel. Nothing but problems with the carbs if stored longer. In my saw, I use non-ethanol gasoline bought at the pumps mixed 45:1 with stihl oil when doing a good amount of cutting (15-20 cords a year). After cleaning it to be put away for the winter, I drain the tank and run it dry, then put alkylate fuel (Stihl Motomix) in it, and run it again to get it through the system. My MS 261C (Mtronic) always starts within 3 pulls even after 6 months or more of sitting. So, in a nutshell, if you have a fuel station that sells NON ethanol gasoline, get that. It may be more expensive but it'll save you a lot of headaches in the long run and it's still cheaper than Motomix. From what I understand, ethanol is added to raise the octane rating on lower grade fuel.

  • @MachineryNation

    @MachineryNation

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good advice Billy 👍🏼 here in the U.K. we unfortunately don’t get non ethanol pump fuel. Sounds like you have got it spot on 🤩

  • @billybobbocephus2177

    @billybobbocephus2177

    2 жыл бұрын

    @HayesMachinery , another option for you folks in the UK and elsewhere that don't have non ethanol gasoline and really want it would be to call the fuel supplier(s) at an airport nearby to see if they would sell 100 octane low lead (100LL) or equivalent. It may cost approximately 50% more than regular pump gas, but it doesn't contain ethanol if that's what someone really wants or needs. I do believe it still contains toluene and benzene (not good for diaphragms or gaskets though) , but it is a fuel that will last longer and not absorb moisture. I would still highly recommend storing for longer periods with motomix, but I wouldn't worry about having a saw sit for 3-6 months with avgas in it .

    Can petrol without ethanol added be bought at service station in England? I’m in Australia and try to buy petrol called 95 which does not have ethanol for my chainsaw. Also if the chainsaw is stored for a few months I usually run the chainsaw till the engine runs out of fuel so there is no fuel in the carburettor. Is this a good or bad thing to do.

  • @MachineryNation

    @MachineryNation

    Even with multiple weapons of choice, fuel is never in a tool for more than a couple of weeks. E10 with a quality oil, works perfectly fine. Premix is still very expensive in comparison! For example, if I used premix in my HS45, it may extend the life of the machine for a couple of years, but for the extra cost of the fuel, I could buy another 3 HS45's in one year!
