Can You Use a GE XWF Water Filter instead of a XWFE ( compatible interchangable substitute replace )

Read below for my cheap solution! I carefully removed the RFID sticker using a hair dryer to heat it up. Then, I used scissors to cut the excess sticker around the RFID chip. Next, I essentially laminated the sticker with packaging tape, so that the sticker is no longer sticky on the bottom. I positioned the sticker under the RFID sensor and taped it into place (I had to reposition a couple times to find the right spot). Now I can buy and use the cheap XWF filters. The only downside is that the red light always stays on, but I could care less. I put the installation date on the cheap filter, and plan to replace every 6 months or so.

@@solosix3991 I am not aware of a time of use expiration where it would stop working. If that would be an issue, you could just buy a filter bypass and remove & repurpose the RFID sticker from it - which surely would not expire.

I replaced the WXFE with the WXF and the only difference is that the "Change Filter" light stays on, it will not cancel. I wrote the date on the side with a marker pen and change it every six months. The price difference is VAST..! $16.99 for three WXF compared to $54.99 for one WXFE. That is approximately $150 difference for a 3 pack. For $150, I can deal with the red change filter light staying on.

Thank you for this post! I'm about a month out before needing to replace my filter for the first time and was looking around for the best deal. Sounds like I'll have to get the pricey one just to get past this first time, but will keep looking. I saw a site offering an aftermarket filter but it looked VERY SHADY! No pictures, no contact info, just payment links. Hard pass!!

Hey, first off thanks for posting this video, I have this exact Same fridge. I ordered the GE XWFE filter from Amazon and got it with no problems, but after changing the filter the water came out first black so then I just filled up a few bowls of water until it became clear and clean, but now the water and ice have a funny taste. Did you have this same experience, or do you have some advice on what should I do?, Thanks.

  • @614inc

You need to run at least 1 full gallon of water, and in your case I would actually recommend 2, through the filter before use. I would also dump out and discard your first full bin of ice too. That said,, you stated that you purchased your filter from Amazon. I would make sure that it isn't some type of knock off or aftermarket filter that is defective or just poor quality. The dark color you're seeing could just be charcoal filtering out which is very commonly used in filters and nothing to worry about. Again I have no way of knowing what you purchased so I can't be sure if anything. I hope you might find some of that useful. Best of luck and thanks for the support!

Good point. Further details which may explain the videographer's terminology: The frig has a low power radio frequency transmitter&receiver (called rfid reader) to send signals to the rfid (radio frequency i.d.) chip on the filter then read the reflected signal that comes back from the filter. The rfid chip is designed to absorb the transmitted signal and reflect it back with an i.d. imprinted. No battery needed. That is why the author uses 'wifi' to describe the tiny transmitter/receiver. Better terminology may be "R.F.I.D. TRANSPONDER/READER inside every GE xwfe CAPABLE frig"

Unfortunately, I also struggled with the filter problem for days before I found the solution! GE solved it with a chip, so that only its own filters can be used, it cannot be replaced with a filter from another party, only the one in which the chip was installed! (rough) So the XWFE types have a chip, while the XWF type does not! The only solution is to buy a GE chipped filter, which unfortunately costs approx. $50! The aftermarket, but replaceable XWF type is not good, because it does not have a chip!

The other annoying thing about this filter (compared to older models) is that you can't remove the cartridge from the plastic 'cup' to actually SEE if the filter is dirty. "Just trust us-- we need the revenue-- I mean, you want to be safe, don't you? Change it when we tell you to." Bastards.

@@614inc I think what he is referring to is your comments about how the chip works...telling you if there are clogs or leaks. The chip is on the sticker so it does not have the capability of telling you anything of that sort. It can only tell you when it is time to replace based on when you first installed which you can simply do with a calendar notice on your phone. Sooooo, as others have done, you can buy the xwf filter for a fraction of the price and just take the sticker off your old xwfe filter and place it on your cheaper xwf filter. The only issue is that your replace filter light will always remain on. It is annoying that you just made up those facts about how the chip works and posted it for people to believe.

@@deniellebonasera4055 Yes it is the whole sticker.
