Yes. I’m done with GE. Our expensive model, GNE27JYMWFFS, had failed compressor 11 months after purchase. Got replacement after 6-week wait (no working refrigerator for 6 weeks!) on warranty. Now, find out replacement unit won’t accept GE original replacement water filters due to this RFID chip nonsense. I’m done with GE and will let all I know to not buy from this company.

If your refrigerator does not have an "FCC RFID compliance" sticker behind the filter then it is not checking for the chip. You can use the much cheaper XWF filters. The owner's manuals that I have seen do not tell if your model needs the chip. Just says "on some models" XFWE filter = $50 XWF filter = $15.

One trick I found is on that particular model you can put it into diagnostic mode get your codes and write everything down and then go to step 16. Do a full reset on the refrigerator and you'll be good to go. This has worked for me on a few different refrigerators that the customer has put in a knock off brand Water filter.

This is a huge scam which I didn't know about when I bought my new GE Profile fridge. I've had it almost 6 months to the day and I have the "filter expired" message. I have hardly even used the water dispenser or ice maker since I've had it. So whether water passes through the filter or not, it will expire and give you these messages that it's expired and you need to buy a $50 filter. It bugs me so much that I wouldn't have purchased GE had I known about this ahead of time. I don't even have the option to not filter my water, unless I buy another part from GE to stop this from happening. The same scam as HP printer ink and it's BS.

I have visitors who see the red light and refuse to drink the water from the refrigerator. GE's excuse is that even if you're not using the water, bacteria will grow in the filter given enough time so filters should be replaced. I have a 5-year filter that filters water before it even gets to the refrigerator. I don't care if my refrigerator thinks my filter is old. I'd disable that red light if I could. I don't want to bother switching RFID stickers every 6 months.

Didn’t work for me on newer style XWFE filter. The RFID is serialized so you can’t reuse from one filter to next. In theory you can use the RFID from the bypass plug, which never expires. But on mine it was very difficult to remove, came apart in 2 layers almost like it was designed that way, and was impossible to put back together. This is on new mid-2021 model GE profile refrigerator.

May want to remove the original label and just use painters tape. When you need to change the filter, you can carefully remove the tape with the affixed rfid chip. This will reduce the chance of damaging the rfid chip.

The refrigerator stores the rfid tag from the filter in memory. The best solution would be to reset the memory. Powering off the refrigerator does not reset the memory. How can this be accomplished? I wander whether swapping two filters back and forth every 6 months would work? So stupid for folks that have one of the refrigerators in a location where it is not used for several months at a time.

  • @hsmatias

I peeled off the label from the old one. Problem was that when I did, part of the RFID stayed stuck on the filter and rendered the RFID useless. I went to Home Depot and purchased a new filter with the RFID on it. I already had 3 generic XWF filters that I purchased on Amazon before knowing about the stupid sensor. I popped off the RFID reader from the fridge and taped it on to the brand new filter, facing the RFID. I then installed the XWF filter and it worked perfectly. The only issue is I have the other filter leaning standing there with wires hanging out. But I could care less. F**k GE for doing this.

I have had my GE fridge for 5 months and it has a XWFE water filter. It didn't come with a bypass filter. My filter was at about 15% when I decided to remove and inspect it for an RFID chip. It does have one - but it's different looking than the one in your video. It's flatter and has the appearance of anti-theft stickers on products at retail stores. I damaged it when I peeled the sticker back (I get an ERR code now after reinstalling it). Do you think we'll ever be able to hack this one? $150CAD a year for water filters is insanity - especially since my family uses sooo much water, and it usually slows to a trickle after only a few months, so I'll likely need a new one every 3-4 months!

If it’s any help I waited til GE had free shipping + 15% off promotion. 3 pack of filters came to about $115 instead of $150 + shipping. I think with the bypass and the easy-tearing RFID, the trick is maybe to use a hacksaw to cut away most of the filter and then sand down until the RFID is left with just a thin shell of plastic. It would be tedious, but should be possible to get the rfid intact. Or, if you have a milling machine.

  • @nicholasbarry4069

I did it with the XWFE filter but had to take a Muti tool saw to the filter and cut out the RFID tag and the plastic behind it. I then slipped this over the cheap filter and it worked. But the only issue is the plastic is so thick that the filter door does not close now so not sure if I will continue with this method. Probably just buy a filter bypass and forget about using it.

I think that is the actual nudge-nudge-wink-wink point of this video. No one who searched for this video is here because they want to reuse an old nasty filter, we're all here to find out how to do it with a new, aftermarket filter that costs 1/3 as much as the $54 GE one but doesn't have an RFID chip. But they don't want their video taken down or to be sued, so the old-filter use case is plausible deniability!
