Can You Swim in Shade Balls?

I bought 10,000 shade balls and tried to swim in them. They appear to act like a non-Newtonian fluid: rigid under high shear stress, but they flow like a liquid under low shear.
All the signed shade balls have now been mailed out - thanks for your support!
Receiving a shade ball:
1. Support Veritasium on any Patreon tier and enter your address ve42.co/patreon
2. In about a month I will send out signed shade balls
3. I will cover all shipping costs but if things get really crazy I will prioritize existing Patreon supporters and higher tiers
My sense was that swimming in shade balls would be difficult but still doable. This was roughly true for the single layer of shade balls. The shade balls slide past each other so they act like a liquid, albeit a viscous one owing to their significant inertia. It's much more intense exercise and it's also annoying to be bombarded with shade balls on all sides of your body, particularly your head. With multi-layer shade balls (as exists on much of LA reservoir) things get significantly more difficult. The balls bunch together and when you try to move through them quickly, they become more rigid, providing significant resistance to motion. This has the benefit that you can lie on them and as long as they stay trapped under you, you can float on them. But a little bit of motion causes them to move around and you sink through quickly.
Special thanks to our Patreon supporters! Join this community to help us keep our videos free, forever:

Huge thanks to:

It was really interesting noticing how he was essentially approaching drowning. There are very specific physiological symptoms that are present in someone who is starting to have that reaction- triggered by the feeling of failing to support yourself in water- that he was absolutely showing. Specifically when he attempted swimming in multiple layers, the way his voice had that panicked "cracking" and he was breathing very heavily. If this was the depth of a reservoir, and not a pool, you would definitely die.

Exactly as I thought. 1. You can swim in shade balls, just harder to do. So you should not. Great to hear that the manufacturer sees this as a concern. 2. You can swim in shade balls, just not the shade balls in the water reservoir. 3. Pool with water and floating balls, hop in. 4. They do look like boba.

Thanks for the laughs tonight! I enjoy these nerdy videos and explanations, and I was also mesmerized by the movement and behavior of the single layer of shade balls and the patterns on the pool floor. I do wonder how much jumping in on them or swimming through them hurt, especially with the butterfly stroke. I have the feeling I'd probably drown and/or get pulled out with massive bruising over my entire body, but I have chronic fatigue and health issues that mean I bruise easily. However, I still want to try jumping in, just once, and I want to see the patterns beneath the surface.

It's because we imagine what's happening with us in such a situation. Head lower than the other body isnt comfortable, and the biggest problem is that you can't do anything to change it. But in this case you can save yourself because it's just a pool and you can swim or even stand there, and there are two professionals, but in the lake even if not alone youre probably doomed.

_Edit: as it turns out, there is still the problem of the outboard motor's exhaust gas._ If the boat is clean before entering and contact of the boat with anything else is kept to a minimum, it's definitely worth it to have a means of navigating the reservoir. If they worry about sunlight, I imagine they want little else to enter (edit: i. e. they'd probably like to remove stuff that got into the reservoir).

@@xCorvus7x No, that dosen't matter. The main problem is that a combustion engine from the boat will release all of it's fumes into the water, so it makes no sense that they are riding that on drinking water, but a human taking a bath is not allowed. Neither should be allowed, but the boat with it's combustion engine, seems especially bad to me, at least use a electric motor

  • @xCorvus7x

@@Saymon10 Are you sure that's a combustion engine? And why would the exhaust be funneled into the water? Exhaust fumes are given off into the air, to contaminate the water they'd have to diffuse into the water (through the layer of balls). Especially with a breeze, the amount of exhaust getting into the water should be minimal.

A human also has genitals, no one except perverts wants to drink water that was touched by a penis. A human also have an anus, if your drinking water gets contaminated by fecal bacteria it can cause diseases, like E. Coli. A boat is just Solid Material, think of it like a spoon, they're clean and can be washed and don't spew out biological fluids. A human has holes and biological fluids, infact our skin basically has millions of tiny holes on them that spews out sweat. The big holes on our bodies (7 not including tear sacs, and the Vagina) also spews out biological fluids, like Sperm, Urine, Feces, Vomit, Saliva, Nasal Mucuses, Anal Mucuses, and many more, there's also the internal stuff that usually doesn't come out normally like blood or Stomach acid. If a person wears an air tight diving suit it's still as the same as a boat, it doesn't spews out any bodily fluids. Edit: also Humans have AIDS and HIV. AIDs and HIV can be transmitted through infected blood and we don't have a cure for them yet.
