It is a damn shame that the cops can be jerks about skating. If it is legal and you are following the rules, they should leave you alone. Tokyo looks like such a great place to skate!

I'm traveling to Japan for a month this summer and I rollerblade everywhere to get around college, but I'm really afraid as a foreigner to try skating in Tokyo or Japan in general. It's a shame since it looks so fun in this video 😢 just don't want to get into trouble with police if I'm just visiting, but it's very tempting to join y'all! Additionally, do you have any areas you can recommend for practicing moves? Like big smooth flat areas where there isn't a risk of running into people? I like to practice wizard skating but I'm not sure how feasible that is in Tokyo

Hope you get to join one of these runs :) If you want to practice Wizard, there are flat areas at the Tokyo Rinkai Disaster Prevention Park and an inline skater hosts flat sessions on Sundays once a month. There is also Shin-Yokohama inline skating square if you want to check them out.

It looks like Tokyo has great roads, there are probably a lot of roller clubs in it, and at the same time you can be forced to take off your roller skates - I would butt to the last. Although we also have moments when we are careful with the police, but usually only when we need to drag 500 - 600 people through the whole city.

I don't think you can skate in Ueno Park, it is more for walking around from what I see

Do you have any experiences with skating past midnight/very early morning? Visiting for the first time from USA in August and I really want to bring my skates and explore but I don't want to cause any trouble.

I haven't tried it but it might work? but I think most places would be too dark to enjoy the view. Also early morning depends on the time. Later than 6 am on a weekday would be risky imo because it would be the rush hour and police don't like it when you skate on places where people commute eg: near the train stations. I think avoiding the main roads is the best way to go.

Hmm don't think I know the solid rules either, all I can say is it's a good idea to find a spot where there is less people around. Hope you can find somewhere nice :)

There is a police station nearby so if the police is around, you might get told off. I am also not sure if Ueno park has a lot of flat ground for skating. Hope that helps :)
