    Fantastic! I had a feeling you shouldn't do that. It's only a very thin coat of paste on my walls but I'm still going to give this a go. Thank you so much

    I have this same issue but it was done in a bathroom so the humidity has made this worse and given it a moisture dripping sheen. I am planning to seal it with BIN (Shellac) primer, but I'm not sure.if I should clean the walls before. They're so sticky and have so much dust stuck to these areas I'm not sure that using a brush (like you showed) or a sponge would be strong enough.

    Warm soapy water and a sponge should be fine... wet a area in and leave for 5 minutes repeat wetting helps work up the old paste.. then rub off and wash area again... this will remove old paste.. allow to dry fully before applying any sealers. thanks

    Hi, have just stripped our living room walls and there is a load of paste still on the walls, have wetted the walls and scraped of a load of paste but can still see the paste (there is a animal print sheen still). Do I just go at it with hot water and sponge now or scrub in the paint? Also have patches of paint that can off with the paper, do I use fillers to get the level the same of build with paint coats? Ps your videos are great for us !!

    As long as you have tried your best getting all the paste off it should be okay. you need to scrap off any loose paint, then seal wall with diluted PVA. fill to feather any edges, sand and seal. Ready for paint or paper.

    But what do you do when the walls have already been painted? How can I fix the walls and paint another color? Every wall in our house has wallpaper paste beneath the paint! I can see it. The walls were painted approximately 8-10 years ago. Can I paint the walls with a sealer like Pro-999 Rx-35 and then paint? Or do I have to scrub the walls through the paint until the paste comes up?

    Depending what paint has been used.... it would have sealed the paste... sand wall and use a washable matt give it a quick coat.. if any areas react when working just scrub area with paint brush and work paste into paint... once dry sand down and walls should be sorted...

    Great video mate. See this paste behind paint effect a lot on council properties I work in. The decorators are in and out so fast if you blink you miss them... don't suppose you know what colour the skirting and architrave is painted in do you? Looks a nice colour on the screen!

    Thanks, the colour before it's painted white on the architrave is overtly olive Dulux colour but had it mixed in Valspar paint from B&Q.

    So I have a wall that had the paper stripped off and washed but a couple patches of rogue paste remained. Only when I rollered on one coat of emulsion did I realise (someone else did the washing off). What is the best way to correct this. I'm thinking it might be best to wash off the paint quickly, (before it dries too hard) and remove the paste then once clean put the first coat down again. Is this possible or will it end up looking worse than leaving well alone and hoping that the second coat will hide it all?

    Sorry for late reply, you can wash it off, but what I usually do is just scrub the area with a paint brush and mix it with the paint. Then roll over usually works a treat.

    Hi mate.... When stripping old paper with the intention of making walls good for painting for customer do u prefer to (1) lightly skim over all the walls with some powder Filler and a good sand down and clean or (2) hang lining paper. Quite often I find myself stuck in two minds about which option is best. Lining can often be quicker but for some reason it can be hard to talk customers into having walls lined before painting as they have this fear of putting paper back on and often they just want rid of it altogether. How do u go about it mate? Sand and fill and clean, or line!

  • @PaintingandDecorating

    Stuart McIntosh Well usually I say for best results line the walls. And explain to the customer that it will just look like painted plaster, but each wall has the same texture after applying lining paper before painting so makes for a perfect job. Sometimes on damp walls it's better to just emulsion the plaster to let the wall breath.

    What if you use an oil based undercoat? And you then want to repaper the wall. I have been removing old paper from an old horsehair plaster wall and it is very difficult to get all the paste off. It does not tke ten minutes. I've spent three days on the one wall and I still haven't got rid of all the glue. So can I paint over it with an oil based primer

  • @PaintingandDecorating

    If you're putting a paper on, it does not matter too much if there is a small amount of old paste left as long as there is no mold treat the mold. And you can hang lining paper if you just want a painted flat surface. The only reason you need to clean all the paste off, is when you are applying paint directly to the wall so it does not react with the paste.

    There is no covering up old paste with any paint. Your're only making problems for future decorating.

    I hope to get a reply! my issue is the wallpaper won't come off... I did everything , did the holes in the wallpaper, put wallpaper stripper (idk what it was called so calling it that) let it sit and scraped it off and peeled what I can off but there is still paper and alot of glue on the walls.. I'm so tired of doing this and it still not coming off .. can I just sand it and paint over it ?

  • @PaintingandDecorating

    @PaintingandDecorating

    If you get to a point where it won't come off... just wash it over allow to dry fully then sand.. then give it a coat of diluted PVA.. milky water... allow to dry.. then a coat of washable matt... Once dry you should have a good surface may be some filling before your colour. Thanks

    Is Zinsser Guardz any good for preparing walls for painting over stubborn wallpaper paste?

  • @PaintingandDecorating

    @PaintingandDecorating

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@George-uq6yf no best to just remove the wallpaper paste. If it does not want to come off its properly nit wallpaper paste... covering probkems apart from stains is no good.. warm soapy water elbow grease.. if all else fails then see if it reacts with your paint if not happy days. Only then would I put something over it,, but lining paper is a better option and cheaper..

    Wash walls down then a coat of zinsser Gardz it seals in any left over paste leaves a fantastic Finnish for emulsioning or lining its water based and can coat up after 3 hours It’s great as well for sealing distempered or limewash Been using it now for years with no comebacks a no 1 professional sealer

    Thanks for reply. I feel I do not put enough paste on my paper,poss due to brush,all these nylon bristles seem too harsh spreading paste,is a wide paint brush better,or does anybody use a roller? Am redecorating our bungalow after much building work so your tuition is grest help. I noted my white emulsion ( crown brill white) gives a powdery coating on hands if touched,not good on walls,so think I will wetwipe and repaint,sadly,maybe try valspar?

    To prep stripped plaster walls and woodwork,I used to spray the walls with a garden pump spray to liven up old remaining paste and then scrape it all off with a 12" metal corker and wipe the wet woodwork off with a sponge.. Call me old fashioned but it only takes 10 minutes to do and once you see the amount of disgusting gloop that comes off, I wonder why some of today`s so called painters would pay extra to go over that disgusting crap just to hide it with expensive zinser Gardz! Just sayin!!

    For as long as my arsehole points towards the floor that method will NOT remove all the paste from a prior papered and sized wall. 🤣🤣
