    I wish I could post pictures or a video of my project but unfortunately I can’t. I have to say that this technique really works well. I have the same situation in my bathroom. What I did was I removed the Wallpaper. Then I removed any loose backing, and finally I applied two coats of bin. When I applied the first coat I could see a couple areas that looked like it was starting to bubble so what I did was I used a hairdryer while pushing on them sections and that seemed to do the trick. I then applied the second coat with no problems at all. I got up this morning and looked at the walls and everything seems to be locked in perfectly. This saved me many hours of work. Now time for the skim coating.

It is taking a lot of the skim coat off with it but I now know the brown paper that remains solid can stay! Never skimmed before but will have to out of necessity. Wish me luck 🤞. Great video, and a big salute for taking the time to do this video. You seem to be talking to people who talk your lingo. Assuming all the wallpaper (or Vinyl) is off the wall with only the paper backing stuck to the wall…..what are the next steps with what products? The forest is getting lost through the trees, with this video. You’re using BIN to cover the paper residue (correct me if I’m wrong on that), then what product are you using after that? Paint? A sealant of sorts? I’m pulling paper to get ready to be painted, and it seems like this product will work to get the wall ready for paint.

    After BIN or oil-based primer, then skim coat with joint compound. It will take 2-3 skim coats. Just like fresh sheetrock, joint compound (either coating tape or skimming walls) needs to be primed - however, now you can use a water-borne primer. I just did a ceiling and "prime checked" (fixing any imperfections) after the first coat of primer. I used a blue-tinted joint compound so I could see the fixed spots. Then I sanded the whole ceiling again and primed again. Then two coats of ceiling paint. I didn't sand between coats of paint but it still looks perfect now.

    @@spencercolgan, Thanks for your video! I'm in the same boat with plaster walls that have painted-over wallpaper. My contractor says he's having trouble removing the paper. His team has only been scraping without any water or chemicals or scoring. Now he wants to use Roman Pro-935 Wallpaper primer and then skim coat. How does this or any primer penetrate painted-over wallpaper? Wouldn't that be like the vinyl wallpaper that we're not supposed to use your process on? I'm very worried we'll end up with bubbling and/or peeling in the future and have an even harder time fixing things when there's now a skim coat over the painted wallpaper over the plaster.

    As a pro painter/wallpaper expert you have a couple options: 1. If you have filled and sanded all and you are happy with wall then prime and paint two coats. 2. Or prime then look over wall for any imperfections as the primer with a direct lightbulb on that part ot the wall you are viewing will show any imperfection and you can skim a few sections and reprime.

    Thank you for the video. With respect to Zinsser BIN, I notice the same company has an oil based primer by Zinsser called Cover Stain Primer Sealer Stain Blocker, which is oil based. I live in New Zealand. The cost of this oil based primer by Zinsser is approximately 60% less than BIN when purchasing a 10 litre bucket versus 3.75L bucket. Have you experience with this alternative Zinsser made product and could it be used to seal like the BIN, then skim coat, prime, and paint as advised in the video? Perhaps that is the oil based primer in the hallway in the video. I am looking at a very expensive renovation, and looking for areas where I can reduce costs but not sacrificing quality of finish.

    Hi Spencer. My question is an odd one. Our house is over a hundred years old. It had ancient wallpaper in almost every room. The wallpaper-sometimes multiple layers-was stretched over cloth, but behind that there was cardboard held in place (partially) with what seems like millions of tacks. We have the layers of wallpaper off. We have some of the cardboard off. Will the BIN cover the *remaining cardboard? It's too much work for us inexperienced DIY homeowners to put up new sheetrock, and paneling is ugly. We'd like to apply paintable textured wallpaper directly over the BIN-coated walls, if possible.

  • @MaryCumbersnatch

    @MaryCumbersnatch

    I have tried scouring the Internet for information on the cardboard backing, but there are only a couple people who've experienced this from what I've found. They just scraped it off, then pulled the tacks (which we have done in some places, but it's a huge PITA). We did have the backing tested for asbestos, and it was negative.

    What if it's a wallpaper that won't peel off, didn't respond really to steam, scoring, or chemicals. I think the wallpaper can be wiped down but it isn't vinyl (which I think was used in the kitchen and peels off leaving a light brown paper)

    Love the video but couldnt help but notice the example at 31:00 is a hoot. While highlighting the importance of skimming in the correct direction, the suggestion explicitly asks which way the valleys are running, left to right or up and down and we are told to always follow the the direction of the low point. We then see a horizontal skim over the vertical lows and they cover just fine. also BIN is £100 a tin (5L) in the UK.
