Day 2 of wallpaper removal in the LAST room of the house with wallpaper. I almost gave up on the repair process until I saw your video!! I’m a diyer and FINISHED redoing everything in my last house (paint, tile, carpet removal, hardwood floors, staining caninetry, etc), then had to move states to help my elderly parents so I’m starting over 🤦‍♀️ I thought I’d done it all, but nothing compares to wallpaper removal and repair on a wall that wasn’t primed or painted before the wallpaper was applied. I watched a lot of KZread tutorials, but you are the most encouraging, educational, and inspiring. Thank you for repeating “you can do this!” every time I started doubting myself while watching your videos ❤

7:04 a.m. Thank you so much. I cannot tell you how much this video is going to help me.I stopped working on taking down my wallpaper about a week ago after experiencing every problem you mentioned in this video. At 78 years of age, completing the task became unimaginable. I watched one of your videos before, was inspired, but the excitement fizzled out because I was faced with other problems I was up against. In this video you ADDRESSED every problem I was having on my wallpaper removal adventure as well as HOW to FIX THEM. So I thank you again many times over.

Hi Spencer! I just arrived in the UK from my home in the US. My daughter and son-in-law live here and just purchased their first flat. I (Mom) was invited over to help with a little wallpaper removal and painting!!! I've always done my own painting but have not had much experience with wallpaper removal and prep for painting (after removal of wallpaper.) So...KZread to the rescue!!! Luckily, I found your channel!! Your presentations are outstanding!! I think I've watched all of your videos on this subject. My shopping list is ready and I'm ready to tackle this project!! Thank you so much!! Also, I am very sorry about your friend Juan.

Just found your channel! Wallpaper removal in a 110 y/o house with 5 layers in the great room is my challenge. I'm glad to see there's a professional that has the DIY answers.

Wish I had found this video sooner. My house was built in 82. Assuming dining room had wallpaper at some point. Whatever the issue the wall peeled badly. Found video after video after video saying lock it down with Gardz. Can not find Gardz anywhere so I used a product by Kilz that is supposed to do the same thing. Started to skim the walls. No problems at first. Later after lots of expensive mud was applied the wall bubbled like crazy. No matter what I did they continued to bubble. Peel. Redcoat with the clear “sealer” and remud and more bubbles. Finally got down to the wire and was able to get peeling to stop for the most part. Skimmed the room primed with Kilz oil based original which I always use although it gets me three sheets to the wind. And painted. Room looks great now. Much better than if I would have hired a “professional”. I say that because I have yet to find a “professional” that works in this industry. Lots of dip****s though. Had a 5 gallon bucket of Kilz original sitting there the whole time. I thought about trying that but the KZread “pros” all say Gardz. Had I found this video I would have been done a very long time ago. Thank you for the QUALITY info Spencer!!!

I had something similar so I just put lining paper over it and painted that. Not as good as your finish here but I found that manageable. I filled the seams and lightly sanded them. Cheers for a great explanation Spencer and hope you enjoyed your working vacation! 😂

Spencer, great video, once again! Hey let me ask you, I have had a bonding issue recently using hot mud and putting on a thin coat. Pretty darn thin, probably 1/64” up to 1/16th. I had to scrape it off and redo it. Anyway I read later on that the manufactures say that you need to put on an 1/8” inch! I am doing a lot of spot repair work scattered throughout the house and trying to keep the repairs thin so it’s easier to feather into the light “skip trowel/Spanish skip” already on the wall In your experience how thin can you really get away with hot mud? Oh considering I started priming over the existing matte and semi gloss paint that is around all of these repairs I have yet to do. Oh last thing, I live in the house and I am really trying not to do any sanding if at all possible. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated! Great channel, cheers:))

Help! In The Netherlands i can only find the B-I-N or Bullseye 1-2-3 or Cover Stain. Would one of these work too?

Good job. But, another option is to plaster over the entire wall paper with glue based compound following with a skeem finish coat😉🙂

wonder why in Amrerica you don't skim over the taped plaster boards with plaster? Also... do you have Zinsser Gardz, that seal plaster board like that?

  • @spencercolgan

We have Gardz. It’s quite expensive, in my opinion. Re plaster……there is plaster over the 4’x8’ boards of gypsum-sheetrock(we call it) but what you’re seeing in the video is a column of plaster that just covers 12” or so over the joints of adjoining boards of the Sheetrock. I hope this answered your question.

I thought one had to texture the walls before painting. It looks like that step is not necessary. Am I correct? Thanks

aside from the level 3 job areas, I have some places where the paper, used as crown molding, came off without damaging the walls. Is it possible to add a coat of Kilz then paint without the intervening steps?

Hey Spencer. You’re making work for yourself using kils. Sand down, a coat of zinsser gardz, skim walls with filler, sand down, gardz again and then paint.

I like what you’re saying, but here’s the thing… I don’t think it would save me any time and guards is a lot more expensive

  • @chrisbeach44

Fair point Spencer. Gardz is water based so dries quicker. We can’t get kils over here so I have no price comparison. Keep up with the good videos.

@@spencercolgan i cannot get Kilz or Gardz here (The Netherlands). Only these from Zinsser: 1-2-3 or B-I-N or Peel Stop. Which one would do the same job?
