Can You Name 10 Commandments? ***Evangelism at the Fair with Pastor Mike Collier***

Ойын-сауық

In this video, Keith follows Pastor Mike Collier as he goes throughout the N.E. Florida fair offering people $10 if they know the 10 Commandments. He then tells them how the law brings us under condemnation but Christ provides forgiveness and justification through His work on the cross. We had a group go with us handing our tracts and their picture is seen at the end of the video.

Thou shalt have no other gods but me, Before no idol bow thy knee, Take not the name of God in vain, Dare not the Sabbath Day profane. Give both thy parents due, Take heed that thou no murder do, Abstain from words and deeds unclean (i.e. commit adultery); Nor steal, though thou art poor and lean. And do not lie, but always say what is true, And covet not the things that don't belong to you!

I use this to remember; read GIVS HMAS BC G-gods I-idol V-vain S-sabbath H-honor M-murder A-adultery S-steal B-bear C-covet Then state each commandment after remembering the letters abbreviated.

From an ex-Catholic: the Roman Catholic version omits #2 “no graven images” and adds “ you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife” as a separate commandment #9. So that lady may have honestly thought she was on track.

She was right on track. Actually, the Catholic Church doesn't "omit" the second commandment. It's just part of #1. If you read the Catechism you'd see it's there. I suggest doing a four-way comparison with the Catholic/Lutheran 10 Commandments, the Calvinist/Eastern Orthodox 10 Commandments, the 10 Commandments in Exodus, and the 10 Commandments in Deuteronomy. Then count the actual number of commandments in each of the Biblical versions. You should see that the Catholic version of the 10 Commandments is based on Deuteronomy, while the Protestant version is based on Exodus. Also, there are actually about 14 commandments in the Exodus version and 15 in the Deuteronomy account. And the account in Deuteronomy has 2 Commandments against covetousness. Why? Because coveting another's wife is a sin against the sanctity of marriage, while the other one is about coveting another's goods. Wives (and husbands) are not mere possessions; hence, the 2 commandments are numbered separately.

Rachel, the 10 commandments are written in lots of different ways, and sometimes more then even 10 commandments are listed actually. So it's not like there is really a wrong way to recite them so much as what version of them a person is familiar with in my opinion😅

@@dman7668 That's right. They are recorded in full in 2 different versions in the Old Testament in 2 different arrangements. They are not numbered in the Bible. In Christian and Jewish traditions, they are numbered in at least 3 different ways, but always in a short form to allow memorization even by young children. The Greek-speaking Fathers had one numbering system, and John Calvin followed their tradition. The Latin Fathers (mainly Augustine) used the numbering used by Catholics and Lutherans today. Jews use yet another system. For them, the first commandment is "I am the Lord your God." The second is "You shall have no other gods." Serious Christians from all traditions often memorize the summarized version used by their church AND study both full versions from the Bible. The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains both full versions in parallel columns, followed by over 100 pages of discussion on every commandment including the one saying not to make graven images and worship them.

If I answered "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself"... would that be correct?

I don’t like the parachute analogy. It has been the undoing of at least a couple of generations of people thinking they were Christians, but where as pagan as the world.
