When you grieve the death of that old familiar life and the old man you find a new man is being formed and born of the Spirit and Spirit led he becomes everyday more like Jesus.The battle is in the mind and if we learn to listen well for Holy Spirit, He will remind us not to go digging up the old rotting corpse....
