The A-10 Thunderbolt 2 (AKA the "Warthog") is only a 30mm, but it's a gatling style gun. We never really "Skipped" the 105s in production of cannon armed aircraft. The AC-130 carries those... If you really want to look at it a bit different, you could say that Japanese dive bombers responsible for the end of USS Arizona were armed with cannon ammo. The "bombs" were 14inch battleship shells in a casing that allowed them to be carried by the bombers.

Couple of things: Having the drum Magazine at the center of gravity is incredibly important in a plane like this. Very well done! Ammo is make up a significant amount of weight, so having the drum at center of gravity is the only way to give the pilot any chance of hitting consecutive shots, since there are no fly by wire aim assist shenanigans going given the level of tech. Also, given enough fuel capacity or even mid air refueling (aerial refueling was invented and used even before WW2) this this could be a potent ASW / convoy raid aircraft. Stick a radar on it, give it another seat for a navigator, done... Though the crews will probably hate it given the lack of accomodations for missions that last so long.

That is one sexy aircraft! I was totally thinking 'Moonbat' as you were building it and I'm glad to see it wasn't lost on you, either. As for the concept of aircraft attacking and sinking ships using a large calibre gun... I seem to remember hearing or reading somewhere about a B-25 (either a G or a H, I can't remember which) sinking a Japanese destroyer with 5 rounds of 75mm. I don't know how much truth there is to that, but I'm sure I heard it somewhere. Oh, and the thing with the Sheriden's recoil - I think the thing was that the gunner had to quickly move his hand away from the breach when the gun was fired, or otherwise run the risk of a broken wrist.

Funfact: In WW2 they actually mounted 75mm howitzers to naval raiding aircraft like B-25s and B-24s. However, the squadrons operating these planes noticed that for commerce raiding, what they needed was *suppressing fire*. The attack method for these planes was usually a technique called "skip bombing", where you drop a bomb so that it skips across the surface of the water like a rock. In order to do this, you have to fly parallel to the water's surface for a pretty substantial distance, meanwhile every gun on the ship your targeting is firing at you. The 75 was decent enough but most crews could only fire it 3-4 times on an attack run, so a couple of squadrons replaced these cannons with a whole bunch of .50 caliber machine guns.

actually, something like this was made during ww2 from the us. the XA-38 had a 75mm cannon and i think 2 or 4 mgs. however, the italians during WW1 came out with the P. 108A serie 2 and it had a absolutely massive 102mm cannon. i think that if this probably had maybe 10 to 15 rounds of ammunition the design you made might be able to fly, but to fly well you’d probably have to have like 3-6 rounds of ammo that would be used sparingly (note i’m not a plane nerd so i’m probably wrong about most things) but overall cool plane! 👍 (i’m talking about with the ammo if this were to actually be made irl)

Fantastic design! It looks like a concept that might have been forward in the late 40's when aviation was sort of in between the prop and jet ages.

Next time you could make a “orbital bombardment” airplane, so just a howitzer on the underbelly of the plane pointing downward. Love your vidz❤

There are plenty of ground/surface vessel attack craft with "Tank" Cannons in them... what you are talking about is an Artillery Piece... while they are used on Tank Chasis, they tend not to be tanks but Self Propelled Artillery or Tank Destroyers (which is a weird designation to me because its still just Self Propelled Artillery)...

AAF camo idea: Clearly, someone's been dipping into the ol' "Arcade game bosses for tanks," idea, and the Army borrowed a couple planes to see if the idea has merit on ground.

The 1943 Mosquito FB Mk. XVIII Tsetse had a 57mm 1/4 pound anti tank gun fitted to it. Wikipedia makes it sound like the pilots prefered to use its rockets rather than the gun to take out enemy U-boats. Still a cool idea though. Great video.

I LOVE the design of this thing! It could be a tank destroyer too! Some strike aircraft during WW2 had this exact concept, just a much lower caliber. Notably the German Henschel HS 129 for example

My idea of a ww2 fighter is a Fuselage of the i-15/i16 (stretched), a engine of the il-2, a tail of the p-36, wings of the p-39, guns and a canopy of the p-51 and the cannons of the spitfire.

The UK did mount a 25 pounder gun in a Mosquito. The recoil virtually stopped the aircraft, but it was very effective anti-ship and anti-sub system. Apparently the navigator was not thrilled with the effort and contortions required to reload!

Love it! One more great creation. And I do like those real world planes where they just build a plane around a big gun. The A-10 is of course the most well know... But boy, there where some big gunned WWII aircraft too. Not 152mm howitzer size, what I know off. But proper tank calibre guns. With the lagers being over 100 mm I believe. Even the modern AC-130 gunship has variants with 105 mm howitzer. May all be retired now however.

I really like that plane. It's elegant, even though its a bit bloated with the ammunition drum. I think what it could be used for is for hunting U-Boats. As this is around 1945ish, submarines are going to be diesel-electric types that spend most of their time on the surface, only submerging when they need to for avoiding detection. What RAF Coastal Command had to hunt U-Boats during WWII was De Havilland Mosquitoes with a 57mm 6pdr gun. They would find the U-Boat, fire an AP shell through the hull so they can't submerge, and then another aircraft could finish it off with rockets. A 6 inch CPCBC shell with a decent HE filler could probably sink a U-Boat in one hit.
