when you open the plug-in in GB are you seeing the same thing thats in the video? ...I dont have the same image of the tool....Also...The track that I try to use it on goes silent each time....So weird bec I have a 2020 iMAC.

Thank you for a great video and a great exploration of this plugin. I'm looking forward to giving this one a go myself. Honestly, that "Foundation" knob just sounded like a high pass filter to me.

Great video buddy! I must confess I’ve been using bandlab to master my stuff up to this point. It has zero adjustability but gets useable results. This looks so much better. I got it for free so going to spend some time getting to grips with it tomorrow.

Great review! IMO, the Hard setting you had worked the best with where you put the Foundation. Soft wasn’t hitting the low end hard enough, so it sounded a tiny bit more boomy on Soft without readjusting the foundation

Great plug in. I'm using it and the Clipping plugin you recommended to master songs today. Would you consider just doing a show on the top 10 plug ins of all time we need to consider? Like, I wouldn't know about this one unless you mentioned it. There are a bazillion plugins out there; it's overwhelming! Most of which guys at my level will never use. That would be super helpful. Finally: when mastering, one video you said after using BX, then do Clipping, then open a limiter and set it to 1.0. But if I set the trim on the BX to 1.0, then add another limiter, aren't I essentially setting two limiters? Isn't that a problem?

One warning I did get was a lower security setting one. great plugin though. proper good.

Thanks for the run through. I’m enjoying this plug in. Nice and simple! Two quick questions. On the meter - do you want to avoid the blue bars hitting white completely ? Or is a little bit ok? Secondly do you think on your master track you need to use a secondary compressor at all given the one in this plug in is not very adjustable? I think I got a pretty good sound out of my last track but looking at the wave forms it’s perhaps not as flat as what I would expect (eg lots of peaks etc on the visual SoundCloud wave form).

Your wholehearted unselfish approach to giving to us the best you can is highly appreciated and commended. Just a few questions I have that I will place both here and in your channel: 1] What is the change required when mastering along the three steps you have earlier taught: EQ, Compressor and Limiter? Do we skip it when adopting this method? 2] I suppose that this is the first plugin to be placed on the plugin chain of the mixed track and not on the Master track of the mastering project. Such a placement allows for one to hear the reference track without any processing...right? 3] On the Master track of the mastering project, the Vumeter being the last plugin, can we also place a limiter as second last and set the output to -0.5 db as earlier? Hey Dr. Somanna! Great questions, as always. 1) This plugin has a built in limiter and compressor that are cued by the "volume" knob, so you will skip those steps. The "foundation" and "tone" knobs are EQ tools. They don't give a lot of flexibility but they do have a quality that can add that EQ "polish." I would play with these but potentially still do a little EQ (like I demonstrated) BEFORE this plugin. 2) That is EXACTLY right. 3) No need for a limiter! A meter set to RMS could be helpful, though. They do recommend checking a few different types of meters in their manual. I hope this helps!

Fantastic, fantastic, simply fantastic plugin! Just now I have used this single plugin for mastering my current song and this is what I can describe its greatness: the mastered song sounds better than the reference tracks used😀👌. I and all of us here on your channel have been undesirably blessed with your honest, non-covetous and extremely brilliant teachings. I have this doubt: the EQ plugin comes before the Masterdesk plugin, and, tweaking the EQ after having done with the Masterdesk settings, will this not alter the final output? Further playing with this awesome plugin has showed me that one can even automate this plugin that allows us to tweak the song further more🙄!!!

Glad you're loving it, Dr. Somanna! As long as you set your EQ plugin BEFORE the masterdesk plugin, it won't impact the final output. You definitely should not put it after the masterdesk. The masterdesk has your built in limiter, so it needs to be the last plugin in your mastering chain

@@TheBandGuide I have a Mastering Suite set up in GB where I always do my Mastering and I added BW to the GB plugins List. It is really amazing how I can squeeze just a wee bit more ot of my already finished masters. Secret weapon!

Extremely helpful video as always Colin! I downloaded this right away. One thing I am wondering...how come we cannot go into the red during the mixing phase (on the garageband volume at top) but it is ok during the mastering phase? Hopefully it makes sense what I'm asking.

Thanks, Evan! And great question that really gets at the crux of the difference between mixing and mastering. In mixing we are focusing on getting the right balance between tracks and keeping clean headroom at the top of our mix is important for using mastering tools that are designed to bring up the total volume of our mix. In mastering we are using a different set of tools to safely bring up the volume while not creating distortion or losing all of the dynamics. I hope that makes sense!

so i have tried using this and even when i put a reff track in it goes past 6 when i use it for my song the same and i also use the bx_meter and there is no clipping or anything wrong so i don't what to say about this Plugin

Hi Colin. Since updating Mac OS and GarageBand I’ve found that the fresh air plug-in no longer works. Which is a real shame as it’s great on vocals and acoustic guitar. 😞

Is this available on Garageband IOS iPad?

Great for getting rough masters out to clients, but not an all in one mastering tool. It lacks several of the features that the bx_ masterdeck has, (basically a lite version). I don't think anything really comes close to Ozone, which I won't be replacing with this VST.

Is this plugin the same basically as UA is charging 75 bucks for on their platform?

I downloaed it and after I made some changes, and I also set the output a -1 I analised it with youlean and it says that the truepeak goes also at -0,1.... how is it possible?

Great introduction thanks. Personally, I would avoid Tone B and D options for now as there is a severe, narrow EQ resonant cut at 315hz, which I detected using both the EQ Curve plugin and Plugin Doctor for analysis. I think the severity of it is a bug, which I am going to report.

I've used this on 2 seperate songs so far....the first, a lighter tune, sounded great. The second is a bit heavier, and with even less volume adjust (keeping in the green), I get a pumping effect. have to bring it down alot more than the other song. Seems weird. thoughts?

Hey Sash! This is likely because the song coming into it is a bit too dynamic. It’s likely specifically on the peaks of the song (loud drum hits or vocals) trying to tame them with a little more compression on the individual tracks in your mix, on the master track of your mix, and on your master in a plugin before (above) this one should help!

Not necessarily! Several stages of subtle compression is common in mastering

I downloaded it and it shows up on garage band but not logic is there any specific reason for this please help

I would check in your preferences that you allow Audio Unit plugins. If you’re set there I would try restarting. It’s definitely compatible with Logic. I’ve used it in both

Looks like a good Plugin, but I'm running MAC OS 10.11.6, and tried everything - set up the account, passwords, downloaded the installation tool etc, but all it downloads to the Plugin Alliance folder is the manual, NOT the plugin itself. It does say its compatible with 10.11, but maybe not. Ive also tried rebooting, but same result, unfortunately.

After downloading and installing, have you opened your GarageBand? I did, and found in in the list of plugins. When the plugin is first opened, you will be asked to activate it either in online or offline mode. Hope this helps.

I’ve never had such a problem getting a free plugin!!! I’ve got it installed and working in GB, but I’m stuck on the 14 day trial. Tried going through purchasing it to put the free voucher code in, but when I put in the code it was still asking me for $149 and my credit card info. Can’t figure out how to actually get it for free!

Their system is a bit confusing! You have to enter the code when the plugin is in your cart BEFORE checkout in the “use voucher” slot

Hey Paul- I'm sorry to hear that! Have you tried restarting your computer? That often fixes those weird glitches for me. Also- are you on an older operating system? Some people who are on older systems have emailed tbproaudio and they were able to direct them to an older version of the mvmeter2 plugin that worked better with their system.

@@TheBandGuide yes, it's a bit older iMac but did a complete refurbishing of it. I'll try a reboot and if that doesn't work I will email them to see if they have a patch for me. By the way. I just started using GarageBand after a 35 hear hiatus from playing music. I'm laid up after back surgery and your videos have been instrumental in what at first appeared to me as way beyond my scope. I can't thank you enough for your expertise and easy to follow videos. Thank you my man.

If you’ve never added plugins you might have to enable Audio Units in your GB preferences > Audio/MIDI> Enable Audio Units

Great for free but really annoying you can't bypass each function individually to hear what you've done.

Thank you! That's a GREAT question... with an unsatisfying answer. Either works! And ultimately either could get you great results. What I recommend is grab this plugin while it is free and try it out and compare it to a master using the other approach. Which do YOU prefer? Which process do you prefer? How we mix and master is very individual and personalized to our style and to our music. As long as all the main components are there and you're happy with the results, you can't go wrong!

Once more, very grateful for everything.

High volume is not always the best alternative. With todays music it’s like a plaque to force the music into people’s ears as if they don’t have any ears. So with that said. Try to be more sophisticated and use dynamic instead of compression. Try to avoid it to the sound like a sausage. Dynamic is the key. There are many ways to reach that goal and most likely keep the listeners alert 🚨

So it’s a trial? I’m sad now!!😟

I dont get on with this plugin at all I think it sounds kind of meh. Id rather use Audio Assault Headcrusher for the saturation and Klanghelm MJUCjr with almost no needle flicker for add colour, both free both add chunk in the low end too, mega simple to use, and the final result is better than this, Loud MAX limiter (basically a clone of the Waves limiter and its free), something like Tokyo Dawn Labs Nova or Slick Eq's , both good enough to master with...both free. Or even Melda Audio Mequalizer, also free, This or TDR Nova is as close to Fabfilter as you will get from free plugins I would much more reccomend using these plugins, than this Masterdesk and if you need a free pultec (It was free think it still is) Coffee the Pun by Acustica Audio, not related to this plugin but no one seems to know about this amazing pultec, its the best free pultec (even better than the Analog Obsession pultecs and they are good) I would run them something like this on the 2bus Headcrusher-> MJUCjr-> Nova-> AA Coffee The Pun -> LoudMAX (this is not quite the mastering chain I tend to use, there are a few more plugins I tend to use but I could use just these, easily and would fancy my results better than If I used Masterdesk) Bit more CPU intensive but sounds better, and I run more than this on a cheap 5 year old laptop, no issues The Masterdesk plugin to me sounds like something "Trying" to sound pro, but it does not achieve it. Its hard to put my finger on what exactly, my only description is it makes things "Wooly" sounding, not muffled, but not clear. I cant articulate it correctly but it sounds almost like a bad bass boost function on some Cheap earphones
