    Here in Europe a common mod on the RT and RS is to replace the tubes that go to the throttle body from the air box with the ones for the GS model. they are a bit different from RT or RS and give you more mid range but you lose a bit of top end. Makes sense as the GS is the sports adventure bike.

    Bought my 1999 R1100RT 6 years ago for $3000 USD. It had 34,124 miles on it. I do all my own maintenance. I changed the injectors to the 1200 spec, I changed my push rods from the pressed type to the one piece design. Installed SS brake lines. Currently have 136,850 miles and counting. Still original clutch, I've spent more money on tires than the purchase price. These bikes are bullet proof! Enjoyed your video.

    Someone on a budget could do lot worse than an old oilhead in good shape. I have an 1150GS and selling it isn't even worth the effort. In great shape they go for $3-4k, it seems, with a lot of effort. I don't even want 17 rider modes, adaptive suspension and a big screen TV for a dash board. I want something I can work on and maintain. I get a lot more satisfaction out of that than all the tech.

    Those BMW´s are confortable riding machines, made to enjoy driving, not racing. The RT´s are nible despite their heavy weight and size, but their low wheel base makes them excellent motorcicles to enjoy curvy roads. But they are not fast. Boxer engines do not like high rpm´s. Its really hard to get any more HP performance from the 1100 or 1150 engines. The intake system and exhaust ports and valves are too small for HP increases despite external changes. A Better sound is the best return on these mods. The low end torque increases is a slight benefit but you really don’t notice it. Your better off going to the 1200 engine to get 20 mor HP and loose 35lbs in weight plus cruise control.

  • @ridingonabudget
    @ridingonabudgetАй бұрын

    Great Video. One idea would be to identify which specific mod gave the most performance upgrade? Then you could compare the cost of each mod to HP/torque gain and come up with a $/HP cost for each mod. This would allow us to identify which mod gives the most bang for the buck. BTW I'm looking at buying a 2002 R1150RT with 23 K on the clock. Ride Safe

    A good and significant improvement is to use the injectors from the R1200 models. They got a better spray pattern and have more holes. Here in Germany we have a company wich check every injector and pair them, that they are only 1% out of tolerance from each other. I think this will improve the bike even more, espacialy with the new chip and dekat.

    R1150 throttle bodies will do the trick. They have 4 hole injectors instead of 1 hole on the R1100 series. The difference between 4 hole and 12 hole is not that big as most vaporizing gets done by directing the gas spray on the (red)hot intake valves. Since throttle body rebuilding is a recurring event for a R1100 owner you might want to look for a set and kill 2 birds with one stone.

    I gave my 2000 model BMW R1150 GS more performance about 2 1/2 years ago, by simply removing the catalytic converter. I believe this engine was initially designed without one because now it shines. The power through the whole rev range from idle is quite different and both torque and power have increased. Where they overlap in the mid range revs makes for a far more dynamic bike. Secondly. I have bought a quick-shifter (up shifts only), for this bike which I have yet to install, but the literature on the device states that the electronic rev limiter will be removed once installed, which may allow another 1000 or so revs, of power production beyond the red line, given that power production only stops because of the limiter. The BMW HP2 is testament to what can be produced at the top end of the rev range.

    Best improvement you can do now is to ditch the junk Dominater and replace it with the original pipe. Dyno it again and compare midrange and the leading slope. Despite some questionable design decisions ,those guys at BMW have their exhausts worked out very well. Noise doesn't equate to power. Another thing: BMW paper filters are not restrictive and filter a lot more particles from the air. K&N is nice on a track bike that gets rebuild on a regular base but are garbage for reliable road use.

  • @RodRidesWrenches

    @RodRidesWrenches

    Жыл бұрын

    Great question! Obviously the fuel chip made the most impact to overall performance but you can't add fuel without adding air and then making it easier to get the burnt air and fuel out of the engine. Increasing HP is a game of inches and there isn't just one answer. There is also the question of how much to spend, I could have gone to high lift/duration cams, maybe found some better fuel injectors as mentioned on another comment, upgraded the ignition but these would have been more costly for probably close to the same gains. Combining those cam mods however with what has already been done will cumulatively increase performance and so on and so on until it impacts reliability. My goal was to be cheap, as always, and get the most bang reliably. If I were going to do only one thing though I would delete the CAT and let the BMW Freak Fly!😉 Thanks for the feedback & the view!

Adding what components you did add, were really not very significant to what your objective was, I thought watching this! I felt you were trying to take a 25 year old bike and compare it to the others in the garage! To me not a fair comparison! The real question to me was, simple! I accidentally found your channel after intentionally buying a 137K mile 1999 R1100GS just for the story (and the probably $1500 in spares). Mine will absolutely stay engine, trans and brakes stock as the stickers on the Jesse sadlebags are the bragging rights (stolen valor..nope will give credit tothe former owner). This style of Motronic has very little to give without much more (useless) expensive modifications than you did. Getting back to stock/new is impressive. Now...go ride the living crap out of it...some more. That is my plan.

    I'm trying to buy either a 2007 Yamaha FZ1 or HONDA hornet 919 high mileage,any recommendations?

    The older FZ1 is a very bullet proof bike, I regularly see them running strong with high miles. I nearly bought one this month but decided to get something a little BIGGER, you can check that out on Saturday with the new vid. Thanks for the question & good luck on your quest!

    Rusted out, like it has a hole in it or just surface rust? The exhaust is way too much for a BMW.

    If you are referring to the muffler, the resonator that holds the sound insulation in the muffler was rusting out.

    Great up load but honestly if riding one of these is it worth the effort Personaly I think not I have one and its more than enough for me I can twist the throtle and pass most cars but when just crusing along who even wants to do that I much prefer to look at the mountains Then when I get the itch I takeout my little vfr 400 in RR 600 clothing and have a blast Life is wonderfull is it not ?????????????????

    How this would compare to your VFR?

  • @RodRidesWrenches

    Which one? The BMW is a completely different bike, much calmer and more relaxed riding. The VFR's are great bikes but power windscreens and big fairings have their place when travelling in cold/wet weather or where you're concentrating more on the scenery than the apex of the next corner. Thanks for the View!

    @@RodRidesWrenches If it is only 20km on the Highway to the nearest curvy mountain road. The vfr would be a better choice right?
