Can You Dirt-Proof Your Bike? | Surface Coating Your Road Bike

Спорт

Imagine a road bike that dirt can't stick to? For many cyclists, this sounds like something from a science fiction movie, but technology from the car industry already exists that might be able to do this for real! Ollie tried coating his bike to find out if it really is possible to make it dirt-proof!

I would have disassembled the whole bike and cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol. These coatings can stay on for a few years if applied well, I think it’s worth to do this during a full reassembly.

Personally I also believe that applying it to the brake surface may create one of many plausible scenarios: 1) make the brake track “slippery”, and until that coating is burned off due to brake pad friction, it won’t go back to normal. 2) make the brake track “stickier”, as the coating could plausibly have a reaction under elevated temperatures, thus contaminating the brake pads. 3) due to the properties that ceramics have shown in thermal resistance, it could also inadvertently help reduce some of the heat generated on the brake track.... albeit, any of the above cases might just be a very minimal effect, but, perhaps worth looking into....

I’ve done all sorts of ceramic coatings on my cars from the cheapest to the most expensive. I’ve done them myself, and i’ve paid detailers thousands in some cases. The claim of remaining “less dirty” is somwwhat true, but dirt will stick, and it can and will look dirty. What they are good for is (as Ollie tried to demonstrate) allowing the dirt to rinse off easily. After a really quick wash, my car looks “freshly waxed”, with no other effort. Bottom line: if you care about a shiny “waxed” look on your bike, then do it. Otherwise, don’t think it’s gonna prevent you from having to wash it.

George Hugh I like the carpro stuff (cquartz, etc) but honestly a lot of these companies take the "toothpaste marketing" approach by confusing the hell out of customers to make them think they need a ton of products for different applications. I've stopped being anal and picky and started using carpro's hydrO2 rinse on product. It's "ceramic" based like the more involved products, gets you 90% of the look and slickness, and goes on in less than 20 minutes (vs an all day or two affair). I just can't spend days doing this anymore. Nor do I want to spend the $thousands that detailers demand for applications

That brand sure makes it easy to get the ceramic coating into the difficult to reach places, which is good. What I used on my Specialized bike was Collinite's Fleetwax 885. It too protected it well against dirt and road grime, as well as making the paint really pop. Now I have a titanium bike so no need for anything but a green scratch pad every 5 or so years.

Funnily enough I spent this afternoon washing, polishing and then waxing my bike. Having one or more coats of wax really helps with the cleaning process. It's important that the surface of the paint/lacquer is smooth first (hence my polishing with a compound beforehand). The combination of a smooth surface and a slippery wax coating means that dirt falls off with the pressure washer quite easily, leaving less manual washing to be done.

I didn’t get the results I was expecting, and I am an experienced car retailer, just not with any kind of ceramic product. And it’s not cheap. In a perfect world (which we clearly don't live in) ceramic coating would be something to do when getting a new bike and it's still in pieces. It would be a lot easier to apply in all the nooksand crannies. And it would be a lot easier to not apply to brake surfaces, seats, bar tape, etc.

I use a product called "RejeX" by the company that produces CorriosionX. The claim on the bottle and after I asked the company is that it makes a micro layer of plastic on the surface, and that you can wax over it after. I found it in one of my local hardware stores for $20 and decided to try it. In my experience, once coated, hitting the bike with a horsehair brush is a quick way to knock the dirt off, and on a steel bike it also covers up any pinholes that may exist in the paint or any chromed/coated components. ...Or large areas where the paint is missing or chipped off... The water repellent nature of it is pretty good and probably how it keeps dirt from getting stuck or clinging to the bike, though it will still get _on_ the bike. I think the bottle claimed it would coat like 4 SUVs and last a year or something, so doing it on a bike with much less surface area extends the use a lot. Wiped on by hand with some cotton or microfiber cloth, and then buffed with a clean one, no pressure washer. It also makes areas of the bike that are coated pretty slippery to the touch, so... using it on a cyclocros bike for actually doing cyclocross is probably not a good idea, and you may want to keep it clear of your pedals if not using clipless. Since it's hand-wiped it should be easy to keep it off the braking surface too. PS: I don't have an aero helmet or cycling shoes (much less carbon/aero ones) so maybe that slickness would work on those for some level of extremely marginal gains?

I have to agree with you, I would have disassembled the bike to also get the surfaces behind mounting points to get 100 coverage, Also with rim brakes don't do the wheels, with disk brakes, take the rotors off, then do the wheels but not the tires. You don't want to impair traction on the road. It would be best to do this when the bike is new and super clean. It works great for cars, and should for bikes.

I'd double the concentration and use a 1.5 liter handheld pressure sprayer to apply the Si02-based coating ( Wetcoat or Aquacoat ) to the bike ( instead of the wall ), much more effective! Alternatively you can use a comparable product ( Cure from Gyeon ) on your microfiber drying towel. Use it once a month and your bike will thank you with a lot of speed and a proud glossy shine! I like to spoil my favourite bike with a layer of a nice smelling Carnaubawax afterwards for even more beading and a jawdropping wetlook!

Great video, just wondering if just waxing your frame with car wax would give you the same effect?

Perhaps not a effective, but MUCH easier to apply is Maxima SC1 High Gloss Coating. It’s in an spray can and just sprays on/wipes off. No pressure washer needed, and will out all the associated overspray waste. I use it on both matte and gloss surfaces and it does a rather decent job.

Can I suggest that Meguiars Ultimate Fast Finish aerosol or Turtle Wax hybrid ceramic sealant produce the same or better results, that last longer and are easier to apply. I use them every time I clean my bike and coupled with wax chain lube my bike stays immaculate and so easy to clean. Cassette is absolutely spotless every time.

Would be interested to see what ACF - 50 is like for bicycles. It’s used a lot on motorcycles and is very highly regarded.

I've never seen a ceramic coating mixed with water and applied via spray hose. Every other one I've seen is a liquid applied directly to the paint with a small applicator, much like wax. It is carefully applied manually to the paint and then small sections are buffed to a nice shine. One prior step to ceramic application is using an oxidizing stripper to get EVERYTHING off the paint. Plus, I can't imagine you'd mix regular water with this stuff. Water hardness varies by region significantly, so it would require distilled water if anything. The ceramic stuff is toxic and EXPENSIVE. You don't spray it all over the place like that and you certainly wouldn't want it all over the front of your house. I looked up "Carbon Collective Hybrid Coating" and I don't think it's an actual ceramic coating. It says it "lasts three months," which is pretty much what typical paint wax does, if not more. True ceramic coatings to paint are permanent applications and can only be removed with rubbing compound and a buffer wheel. On high-end cars, it's done only after proper paint correction is performed to maximize end results. And true ceramic coatings last 1 to 5 years, depending on which you choose. "Lifetime" coatings are snake oil.
