    The acetone smoothing after the sanding was really effective at getting rid of the whitening that sanding causes, so I’d say that was a success.

    A quick (*QUICK*) pass with a blowtorch has a similar effect at least on PLA.

    @@spagamoto Im a HUGE fan of using the torch, but people tend to think your nuts when you bring out the torch for braising plumbing when you talk about 3d printing lol

    there are hundreds of different ABS variants for all kinds of appilications - maybe this seller used a few additives that make it a little more chemically resistant...

    Snow The wolf it’s a variable that could matter, not a lot... but some chemical plastic structures work different than other plastic chemical structures.

    One thing you can do for structure is using aluminum foil to make the shape you want ,whatever for you want to make, then use the 3D pen to go over it.

    You should try ABS filament for 3d printer. These 3d pen sticks probably include some additives to melt at lower temperatures.

    I forget which channel I saw it on but I've seen people use wide wood/leather buring tools to smooth 3D pen prints in the way you tried to use the 3doodler attachment at 11:18

    Burning tools should work indeed, I have once used a soldering iron (with adjustable in 10°C steps temperature) for welding a few cracks in the plastic of my office chair. The idea seemed insane, but worked out really well.

    Clearly that is some ABS mix of some sort. Pure ABS will completely dissolve in acetone. Something is off here. :p But that dragonfly looks awesome man! You're amazing with those pens. Ok the beetle is pretty dang awesome too!

    It didn't look %100 smooth because he used the pen probably. Acetone smooths most polymer 3D prints because polymers degrade when exposed to acetone due to their similar molecular structure.

    @@anonymous.s0tt A. I think you miss the point. ABS in a jar full of acetone will 100% dissolve. His did not, ergo it is NOT truly pure ABS, but some form of mix. B. Not all polymers exposed to acetone will degrade or smooth the same way. Many are 100% resistant to acetone. C. I was not commenting about whether or not anything looked smooth.

    @@secretagb yeah I was gonna say that people use acetone in order to "glue" pieces of abs together because it literally dissolves the plastic and makes the pieces fuse together. It definitely isn't pure abs and most likely not abs at all.

    Can you disclose how long it takes to make certain pieces? I think it would be more helpful to people who are looking to get a 3D pen but don't know how long it actually takes to create something.. Other than that, this is amazing once again! You literally can make anything

    I’m really digging how that beetle came out, it has lots of nice contrast and a fairly realistic shape! It is saddening that the acetone didn’t smooth the prints out very much though, but I’m sure that has to do with additives in the filament and layer lines that are not as consistent as what a printer would put out. Nonetheless, this was a very interesting experiment and I’m excited to see whats to come!

    For the smoothing tool you should try using it while applying the filament and as the filament comes out, the smoothing tool will work on flattening the filament and smoothing it before it hardens

    Harbor freight or princess auto if you are in Canada sells a plastic welder for like 12-18 bucks. Heats up to melting plastic, flat triangular head, purpose made for smoothing plastic.

    I found that on a lot of 3d pen videos, people used a lighter just to melt it a little bit to the point that it's just smooth.

    Thanks for showing your process. I find 3D printing fascinating but it is a bit out of my scope for now. I love the idea of the glow-in-the-dark or neon reactive filament. Both models looked great. Although, I think my favorite is the beetle. Blessings.

    the acetone *did* work! just look at the difference between the original body and the new tail. the originals gave me some james and the giant peach vibes. and the extension was craftsy

    Try using a variable temperature soldering iron for smoothing. That technique is being used more and more. You can get different shaped of tips for it.

    Heating up flat 3d pen things in an oven works well to make them shiny and a bit smother, for me at least

    The Beetle you made was amazing!!! I love it. It's my favorite creature you have made! I liked the dragon flys colors but I think you should try to make another Beetle The same way you made this one but with some of the glow color in corporated in! I'd also love to see you do some different dinosaurs in really cool glow in the dark and neon colors as well as having them have a little regular color to them. I love watching your channel your always a go to for me.

    Nice burning man beetle. And really nice experimentation, I really didn't see when you posted but is nice to see you did my suggestion, even if didn't worked out as intended. IF you want another suggestion of cool things to do I've been working in some porcelain masks, maybe you should try make your own 3D printed masks, I would love to see the how it would turn out with such precision and freedom.

    Thanks! I almost used a 3D pen to make the mask from my last video but the instamorph plastic ended up being more appropriate for that. It could be really colorful and fun though!

    I would try a 3D print with that filament to see if it acetone smooths any better... -- because that spongey affect is what happens with PLA typically.

    A part of me thinks you weren't using the smoother properly. To me, it looked like you are supposed to use it the other way around, and use it to smooth the stuff that is coming out of the pen, not just have it heat up to smooth the existing design...

    You could try to smooth it out with a bunch of schleem, and then repurpose the schleem for later batches. That's how they do it on plumbuses anyway.
