The acetone smoothing after the sanding was really effective at getting rid of the whitening that sanding causes, so I’d say that was a success.

A quick (*QUICK*) pass with a blowtorch has a similar effect at least on PLA.

you can also just go to a higher grit sand paper

there are hundreds of different ABS variants for all kinds of appilications - maybe this seller used a few additives that make it a little more chemically resistant...

he was asking if the guy saying seller instead of manufacturer mattered, not the initial claim
One thing you can do for structure is using aluminum foil to make the shape you want ,whatever for you want to make, then use the 3D pen to go over it.
The next time you need a structure to test on, could you make it a dragon? Mini or big, doodle or print, I don’t care. Dragons are just hella cool.

I'm sorry the acetone smoothing didn't work out, Devin. Thank you for making my suggestion. I'm going to share this video with my mom. She really loves dragonflies.
You should try ABS filament for 3d printer. These 3d pen sticks probably include some additives to melt at lower temperatures.
Getting creative with the thumb nails I see
I forget which channel I saw it on but I've seen people use wide wood/leather buring tools to smooth 3D pen prints in the way you tried to use the 3doodler attachment at 11:18

Burning tools should work indeed, I have once used a soldering iron (with adjustable in 10°C steps temperature) for welding a few cracks in the plastic of my office chair. The idea seemed insane, but worked out really well.

Clearly that is some ABS mix of some sort. Pure ABS will completely dissolve in acetone. Something is off here. :p But that dragonfly looks awesome man! You're amazing with those pens. Ok the beetle is pretty dang awesome too!
@anonymous.s0tt

It didn't look %100 smooth because he used the pen probably. Acetone smooths most polymer 3D prints because polymers degrade when exposed to acetone due to their similar molecular structure.
@secretagb
5 жыл бұрын
@@anonymous.s0tt A. I think you miss the point. ABS in a jar full of acetone will 100% dissolve. His did not, ergo it is NOT truly pure ABS, but some form of mix. B. Not all polymers exposed to acetone will degrade or smooth the same way. Many are 100% resistant to acetone. C. I was not commenting about whether or not anything looked smooth.
@JohnDoe-sp3dc

@@secretagb yeah I was gonna say that people use acetone in order to "glue" pieces of abs together because it literally dissolves the plastic and makes the pieces fuse together. It definitely isn't pure abs and most likely not abs at all.
Can you disclose how long it takes to make certain pieces? I think it would be more helpful to people who are looking to get a 3D pen but don't know how long it actually takes to create something.. Other than that, this is amazing once again! You literally can make anything
I’m really digging how that beetle came out, it has lots of nice contrast and a fairly realistic shape! It is saddening that the acetone didn’t smooth the prints out very much though, but I’m sure that has to do with additives in the filament and layer lines that are not as consistent as what a printer would put out. Nonetheless, this was a very interesting experiment and I’m excited to see whats to come!
ohh still looking for something to make it smooth! lol but tx for sharing these!
Wow, that beetle looks amazing, especially under black light
For the smoothing tool you should try using it while applying the filament and as the filament comes out, the smoothing tool will work on flattening the filament and smoothing it before it hardens
Great Bugs!! I learned a lot from your video. Super cool!!!
Harbor freight or princess auto if you are in Canada sells a plastic welder for like 12-18 bucks. Heats up to melting plastic, flat triangular head, purpose made for smoothing plastic.

Beautiful work. It's always great to see someone improvise when the intended methods don't work out, somehow the desperation sometimes gives the project that little oomph that makes something really cool. Great channel.
Yaaaas pls make more 3d-pen videos!!!
Funny that the beetle's wings looked like a Beatle's Rolls Royce. John Lennon's Rolls looked a lot like your wing pattern and colors.
Thanks for blessing my homepage with your video, i was almost considering going to sleep!
These are beautiful! I’m new to this, and so impressed with what you did. Thank you!

I found that on a lot of 3d pen videos, people used a lighter just to melt it a little bit to the point that it's just smooth.
the beedle is sooooo amazing !!!
Wow great stuff! Gj on creating the insects
Loving these longer videos Devin!
Nice work well done!
Loving the beatle! I can almost hear it take off like a tiny chopper. Tempted to make one myself!
the Beetle looks amazing *.* love it too
I'd actually buy either of those! Bravo!
This is sooo cool thx for tutorials!!! Your sooo cool!!!
I love bugs so much they’re so cool
I LOVE YOUR ART!!! 😍😍😍
That beetle is one of the coolest things ive ever seen
I don't know how a human can have the patience for this
You are such a great artist
I wonder if you could use an iron on flat pieces. Put a sheet of wax paper over the plastic?
Woah that beetle is AMAZING!
I love these funky thumbnails
Thanks for showing your process. I find 3D printing fascinating but it is a bit out of my scope for now. I love the idea of the glow-in-the-dark or neon reactive filament. Both models looked great. Although, I think my favorite is the beetle. Blessings.
holy guac that beetle is amazing, congrats man that's some awesome stuff
I saw the photos on Instagram and thought it was a real bug that was uploaded by a nature account at first, it looks so amazing, keep up the good work!
Wow . You are true real talent .
That clear is pretty cool and i love the glowing effect. Maybe something could be done if you create a model with internal LEDs or some kind?
You should have another channel purely for timelapses

freaking awesome
I really like the wings and legs a lot.

It is looking dope

Awesome beetle!!
You didnt manage to do what the title said but still ended up with a cool result. Nice.
That weird, bendy/spongey texture could be really cool on 3D printed fabrics!
This is awesome 👏😀
Awesome!
That beetle reminds me a lot of dia de los muertos sugar skulls. Pretty cool!
the acetone *did* work! just look at the difference between the original body and the new tail. the originals gave me some james and the giant peach vibes. and the extension was craftsy
Try using a variable temperature soldering iron for smoothing. That technique is being used more and more. You can get different shaped of tips for it.
Heating up flat 3d pen things in an oven works well to make them shiny and a bit smother, for me at least
The Beetle you made was amazing!!! I love it. It's my favorite creature you have made! I liked the dragon flys colors but I think you should try to make another Beetle The same way you made this one but with some of the glow color in corporated in! I'd also love to see you do some different dinosaurs in really cool glow in the dark and neon colors as well as having them have a little regular color to them. I love watching your channel your always a go to for me.
woahhhh those are some of the coolest 3d doodles yet! Shame the smoothing didnt work -_- but at least you got some sweet bugs out of it.
Acetone, ok? After all that, I-really loved how it came out. Pretty cool and large. 👍🏼
i somehow read the title as ''can your ancestors smooth 3d pen models''
I am not a huge fan of insects but those look really cool
Nice burning man beetle. And really nice experimentation, I really didn't see when you posted but is nice to see you did my suggestion, even if didn't worked out as intended. IF you want another suggestion of cool things to do I've been working in some porcelain masks, maybe you should try make your own 3D printed masks, I would love to see the how it would turn out with such precision and freedom.

Thanks! I almost used a 3D pen to make the mask from my last video but the instamorph plastic ended up being more appropriate for that. It could be really colorful and fun though!
I would try a 3D print with that filament to see if it acetone smooths any better... -- because that spongey affect is what happens with PLA typically.
Bro the beetle looked like an animal from coco
For Halloween you should be a skinny thin mustache gangster from the 20s
hey, thats pretty fascinating
A part of me thinks you weren't using the smoother properly. To me, it looked like you are supposed to use it the other way around, and use it to smooth the stuff that is coming out of the pen, not just have it heat up to smooth the existing design...

You could try to smooth it out with a bunch of schleem, and then repurpose the schleem for later batches. That's how they do it on plumbuses anyway.
Very beutifull !!!
I dont know if this would work on 3d stuff but a lot of artists use something called Resin to make things shiny.
