    You mentioned that the UFO was getting top-heavy, but the instability was likely from a larger moment of inertia. Having the rings so far from the center of gravity causes it to over-compensate, which is why people don't get these problems when mounting accessories close to the center of the drone. The Mavic is designed with its PID values tuned to its moment and mass, but with something like a race quad you can adjust those values and stabilize the flight. All the same, great showcase of the Mynt3D Pro!

    My guess would be that the clipping propeller caused the actual crash. The propeller clipping was slowing it down which was also making it drift backwards.

  • @make.anything

    @make.anything

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm sure that had something to do with it.. although the drift could also be from weight imbalance

  • @hootsmin

    @hootsmin

    @@make.anything This guy is right I think, I could see it coming. The propeller clipping the structure meant that the propeller wasn't producing thrust correctly and this threw off the control software which attempted to compensate and crashed the craft. Might even have plain stuck the propeller watching it back again.

    With drones you also have to consider that if you put something that drags with the air moved by the propeller it is going to increase the load put on those motors to fly. In this case the weight added wasn't a lot but there probably was a lot of drag with air and the drone couldn't handle it.

    Great project. Must be frustrating spending so much manual time making something then having it destroyed in seconds. I think using the 3D printer combined with the 3D pen you could build some structures efficiently. Maybe designing some of those 3D printed sub structures then combining with the 3D pen might work out well.

    How about 3D printing a jig of some kind to speed up the welding process? Especially for those trusses. Hard to describe what I'm thinking... but imagine starting with a flat triangle. The triangle would have 3 holes, one near each corner. Now extrude that triangle out into 3D... say 2 or 3cm. Now insert into the 3 holes, your 3 filaments for the truss structure. The jig holds them in place, and speeds up the welding process.

    Unless you can tune the drone's firmware , I suspect you'll suffer instability if you change the drone's angular momentum i.e. any weight that is spread out from the centre . So, try to minimize the height and width of your saucer.

    Oh I felt that too. But for a moment there it was epic. And you got the footage. I think mylar around an open cone "dome" might give you the effect you want. Just mylar sheeting on the outside, but not under or above, so the blades keep going. Then there's the issue of wobble. your rig was too flexible and bent too much, bending into the blades and destabilizing the flight. A central post up through the dome from the body of the drone?

    What if you use thin tissue paper or rice paper to add color and opaqueness to the dome and ship body instead of filament? It could keep the weight down. As I type this, I'm guessing it would block the airflow to the drone, but I don't know enough about this stuff to know for sure.

  • @coaltowking

    Actually a great demonstration w/ some handy tricks and also gives a pretty good idea in general of what's possible with these glorified sorta 'hot glue guns'. And love your 'focus'... lotsa folks have great ideas, but often lack the necessary 'tenacity'. BTW, maybe start with a larger dome wide enuff to enclose the blades, and then add a slightly larger 'disk shape' w/ landing gear _below_ it. Cheers!

  • @kaitlinmcinnis4744
    @kaitlinmcinnis47443 жыл бұрын

    I would personally have made the dome on top a bit shorter, or more of a half oval (I forget the name of it since it isn't an egg but more of a skinny sphere in a sense) since the dome on top probably made the filament bend down towards the blades and was the downfall. Maybe trusses in the main body (avoiding the blades obviously) might help prevent the filament from getting shredded. I hope this helps and best wishes!

    I haven't experimented with that much. TPU is pretty chemical resistant, I don't know of any smoothing techniques for example (would be awesome). It looks like you can paint TPU alright if you prime it first and keep the paint layer thin, but it will also depend on the part and use case. I painted my flexible drum stool feet with cheap acrylic paint and it worked well enough! :)

I have arthritis n carpal tunnel and my hands get tires quite quickly, do you have to put much pressure on the button? Im thinking of getting a pen that has an “auto-extrude” button so to speak, but am worried i won't be able to get as much detail as i want with an auto pen.
