Can We Save This RARE, BARN FIND Chrysler Newport? Revival Series: Part 2
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Welcome back to The Unskilled Mechanic! In this video, we're finally taking a look at my 1969 Chrysler Newport Convertible. As you know, this car has been abandoned for 40 years. If you haven't seen the first video on this car, be sure to check it out! Also, this video was put together over multiple days, so that's why my shirt changes and why some clips we have mics and others we don't. Thank you for watching. Please remember to like, share, and subscribe!

Thank you! I’ve heard less than 200 built.
Hey did a little internet sleuthing for ya. In 1969 they produced 2,169 Newport droptops. Ya gotta figure probably only a couple hundred had the woodgrain and were so heavily optioned. I would bet you got one of less than 10 remaining 🤔. Nice to know that incredibly rare treasure is in good hands 🌝

👍Good stuff. Reminds me … as a kid my goofy uncle had 1 of these land barges & decided to pull out in front of my mother’s house, floored the gas pedal then dropped in low gear. Lol! We had to push him down the road to his house. Drive shaft yoke housing busted along w/ other cast metal pieces laying on the road. Back then, one could just go to the local junkyard and get another for cheap. Yeah, he never did that again! 🤣🤣Good times, good memories.

Never seen a car from the 60s or 70s with wood grain trim like that except for a station wagon. Chrysler did have it on the Town & Country convertible in the 1940s ( and that was likely real wood back then). The same look came back in the 1980s on a K-car based convertible as well. Interesting find. Good luck with it!

That is a boat of a car.
the woodgrain vinyl is easy to replace. I replaced it on a Plymouth wagon a few years ago with vinyl from Vivvid. It was relatively inexpensive, I stuck it right over the old vinyl and it looked brand new.

That car looks like it will clean up great. Hopefully you will be able to have a top made without having to max out a credit card or something. Really classy looking car. If you can find a good one, put a 400 in that sucker. Do a set of decent heads like ported/milled 516/915 closed chambers, get the compression up around 9.5-10:1, cam it, HP manifolds, aluminum intake, souped up 850cfm Thermoquad for the sound, true duals. Maybe 350-400hp at the crank. Never gonna be "fast" it would be really enjoyable and fun to open it up. Probably be as quick as a typical 440 and a bit more efficient on fuel. Always liked the 400, sort of the big block equavilent of a 340 vs a 440 that's sort of like the 360 of big blocks.

Hey, no barnacles under this boat, (so far), but surface rust is not a big deal. It can all be cleaned up. I’d say she’s rare alright and looking forward to future progress. 👍🏽👍🏽

Cool that it's a convertible, has power windows, and has electric bucket seats that still work and a floor shift. I'm surprised the top motor still works. I wonder of the reverse lights would come on.

Lube all the top hinges and let it sit. They work slow without the engine running. Take your time on that 383. It will come free most likely. Add sime atf and acetone and don't be afraid to pull the heads. Easy to do on that car and best of all you don't need to pull the engine to do it. It might roll over without pulling them, key is patience. We got impatient with ours and pulled a perfectly good 383 that just needed more time and cleaning. Love all the options your car has!

Still watching from the State of Rhode Island: 1. My initial reaction before seeing the interior-not worth it. 2.After-wow-&-now I'm thinkin'-worth it-especially since it has-factory-cruise control! 3. It's got AAA-call-'em-they'll get that thing goin'! 4. Last-but-not least-if-your-girlfriend-filming-this-stays-with-you-through-this-odddyssey-and-also-has a-convertible top-she's a keeper!
Your car needs enough work that the cost will unfortunately exceed the value. I sure hope that it’s a labor of love for you. Your pockets must be deeper than mine! I’ve not ever seen another one like it!

The goal is to get it running and driving! It shouldn’t be too bad. I’m not worried about the mechanical work, since I do it myself. The convertible top will be pricey though…

The engine appears older than the car. That air cleaner was used from 63-65. The radiator style is 59-65. They went to the more squared off radiator tank in 66.

I’ve dealt with Murray before. I think this build is going to be mostly stock. Thank you for watching!
The fact that those heavy doors don't sag at all kind of supports the low mileage reading too. Does the convertible way somewhat more I wonder because of added stiffening? I had a fried in the 80s who had a similar car but 4 door. Even with the 2 bbl it was all he could do to squeeze 10mpg out of it. She won't be thrifty LOL.

383... nice. If rebuildable, then aluminum heads and intake, 4bbl manifold and fuel injection with modern ignition... lose the points!! That would be a sweet ride! I think the aftermarket will provide for new fake wood.
