Can We Build a Better Internet?

Ғылым және технология

The internet has fundamentally transformed the way we communicate and access information. But while it lifts us up, it has also become the most potent enabler of totalitarian surveillance that the world has ever seen.
In this talk, I explore the privacy implications of our growing digital world, and the kind of future we are paving the way towards. I also dive into what we can do today to try to ensure a better future.
00:00 The Internet's Double-Edged Sword
03:33 Current State of Privacy
07:46 Effects of Pervasive Surveillance
18:22 The Normalization of Surveillance and its Psychological Effects
25:00 Recap So Far
25:34 What Can We Do TODAY for a Better Tomorrow
33:54 Conclusion
As we celebrate the marvel that is the modern digital world, it’s vital we recognize the internet’s dual nature: it’s as much a beacon of enlightenment as it is a potential tool for surveillance. History is riddled with instances where powerful entities have misused it to target the vulnerable and the voiceless.
As we craft the web’s future, let’s not just innovate; let’s protect.
Every line of code, every infrastructure choice, every innovation can not only push the boundaries of what’s technologically possible, but can also uphold the fundamental right to privacy for billions of people across the globe.
Let's create a better internet!

I would add to encryption efforts, old school privacy. As you said, what is not collected doesn't need to be managed or protected. Give people intuitive hardware tools to manage their keys (encryption, signature or authentication), seamless and brain dead simple private networks to hold their data within, until they are ready to publish or share any part of it with others. Allow non techies to hold their own data simply, as well as us nerds, not to have to lose too much time setting it up for ourselves to get a decent result.

A better cloud-like service was location agnostic servers from Cryptohippie. Their high quality multi hop multi jurisdiction mixmaster VPN was better too. But their marketing was nothing. So nobody beat a path to their doorstep for a better mousetrap. Except a private traveller's currency I tried to co-found. Which disappeared after I left. I left because the other founders lacked the courage and integrity to issue the currency.

Appreciate the effort you are taking to educate us. I have a few questions: 1. When you purchase the pixel phone (even if paid cash) your imei no is traceable and thus also your phone movement? 2. When you want to use aurora on graphene it often doesnt work so you have to make a gmail account instead of using the anonymous one. The problem is with gmail they need a phone no to send an sms for verification. Isnt there another way? 3. My previous questions can be summarized into the next question: can the pixel be used without the phone network (ie verizon) so with only internet. Or can it be switched off so you can only use internet and voip? Thanks again

    1. I don't have a sim in my phone, so my imei is not being sent to any cell provider 2. I set google play links to be openable in aurora, bypassing the rate limiting function. So aurora always works for me. 3. I have a Calyx hotspot I use with my phone, so I have no SIM in any of my phones

Hello Naomi, In one of your security videos you recommended the ***Protectli*** firewall for a home network as one of the most secure and best options for a home network. The prices are a lot cheaper than netgate, and there seem to be enough videos on how to set it up and configure that it should not be too difficult. But... in a random video they mentioned that it was a Chinese company (maybe true, maybe not). Clearly, with China's laws and penchant for espionage and hacking, using a Chinese made firewall would be akin to shooting yourself in the foot and then asking why you are bleeding. When I tried to research the company I could find nothing regarding the company's place of manufacture and corporate ownership. Do you have any information or links that might make me comfortable that this is a US or EU company and thus reasonably trustworthy?

First thing we should do for returning our privacy is make a comeback to the usernames instead of emails, and for verification we can use personal authentication apps. No personal data on the web accounts, all the personal data will be kept in the browses preferences (like credit cars and login passwords managers), if you need to fill delivery form you will have postal unique ids (id only the delivery people will understand and decode, once it lands in the destination country), you just paste your unique id and pay with your "postal" debit card :D, then a postal pin to unlock your personal certificate will popup that will give you one time token. If you need to call someone via video a random unique members ids will be generated identified with random cookie or something not linked to your real account. You can only contact people you know and know you and like to interact with you.

Naomi, I like you. You speech is spot on and I'm happy that there is a female beacon of IT / privacy information. However, you are peddling the same old "China is bad", "North Korea is bad", "non-democratic and democratic countries"... Why didn't Canada make your list of examples of spied on and controlled countries (I'm sure you've heard about the truckers story)? How about Australia (the arrest of the pregnant woman following a FB post)? USA (so many examples to mention here), UK... None of those governments have been elected democratically and people in those countries are one of the least free. And the fact that a country has specific laws that sound like they protect the people doesn't mean they follow them. It's just that they are good at hiding it.

@@NaomiBrockwellTV I totally agree with your last sentence! I think anyone, who can think and who follows the developments around Julian Assange and Snowden can see how "free" and "fair" Australia, USA and UK are. When a state has the capability and technology to track and get their hands on someone they don't like (enemy of the state), it is only a matter of time to apply the same tech and capabilities on its citizens. Being aware of the problem and who your enemy is is the first step in solving that problem. But if we keep telling ourselves that we live in a free country we are masking the problem.

I say NO for the most part unless the people are better. Since when people can not govern themselves properly others with more power will. So let me quote a founding father. John Adams Quotes ="Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." "Without religion this world would be something not fit to be mentioned in polite company, I mean Hell." "We Recognize No Sovereign but God, and no King but Jesus!" "I have examined all religions, and the result is that the Bible is the best book in the world. The Declaration of Independence laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity." "I consider a decent respect for Christianity among the best recommendations for public service."
