Can Walmart Catch Amazon In E-commerce?

From partnering with Instacart to launching Walmart+ as a competitor to Prime, here are all the ways Walmart is looking to catch up with Amazon's dominance in e-commerce as the pandemic pushes more shoppers online.
Walmart is partnering with Instacart to offer same-day delivery starting in a few U.S. markets, making it the latest major grocery chain to team up with Instacart in its fight against Amazon and Whole Foods.
The partnership is currently in a pilot phase in four markets across California and in Oklahoma.
Walmart’s partnership comes at a key time. Consumers are relying on grocery delivery at an unprecedented rate due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and some analysts believe customers will continue to shop online even as things go back to normal.
“Today, we welcomed Walmart to the Instacart marketplace for the first time in the U.S. Instacart now delivers from Walmart locations in three California markets - Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego - as well as Tulsa, Oklahoma,” an Instacart spokesperson said in a statement. “The new partnership brings thousands of items - from groceries, alcohol and pantry staples to home decor and improvement, personal care, electronics and more - at everyday low prices from Walmart stores to customers’ doors in as fast as an hour.”
Instacart already partners with or delivers goods from Aldi, Target, Costco, Albertsons, Kroger and Walmart’s Sam’s Club, along with smaller grocers and drug stores.
By offering quick delivery, big chain grocers have a stronger position against Amazon, which offers grocery delivery services Amazon Fresh and Amazon Prime Now from its own warehouses and Whole Foods stores.
In his testimony before the House Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust on July 29, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said companies such as Shopify and Instacart are emerging as competitors to Amazon’s business.
“In recent months, curbside pickup of online orders has increased over 200%, in part due to COVID-19 concerns,” Bezos said. “We also face new competition from the likes of Shopify and Instacart - companies that enable traditionally physical stores to put up a full online store almost instantaneously and to deliver products directly to customers in new and innovative ways - and a growing list of omnichannel business models.”

What It Would Take For Walmart To Catch Amazon In E-commerce

"You don't have to be as good as Amazon, because no one will get there." Same would have been said of Sears for about 50 years of their history. They were sending stuff to your home a hundred years ago, and just missed the boat. Sears would have BEEN Amazon, if they had understood the Internet. They had the physical infrastructure, the purchasing arrangements, the shipping smarts. All they had to say was, "Can we put these catalogs online?"

They turn away from innovation and risk taking and bank on their share holders and executives. It's why Space X beat Boeing, or how these great old companies just sink under. It makes sense too, why should blockbuster buy this Netflix website if they don't really measure up even to smaller chains? All they do is mail a DVD to you, why add an extra service that doesn't really change your current business, and could waste money? It's a cycle that will hit all companies. In 50 years we'll probably see Tesla or Chipotle or something we think as modern and innovative fail for not adapting. The vision will be blurred by less ambitious, old silver spoon type CEOs than the entrepreneur who doesn't need to take into account any risks, because you can't lose money if you don't have any. The new hearings for tech companies is going to be the turning point for many of these innovative websites into corporate conglomerates. And the magic will disappear.

Ebay is getting tricky. Too many Chinese scams are filling their pages now. Seeds and plants are a prime example. Also, clothing. Check and see where your items come from. Ebay doesn't do much about quality control, apparently, and you can lose a lot of money buying sight unseen when it's used. Markups from independent re-sellers are also all over eBay. They buy at retail and sell for double for some hard to find items. Free market, I know, but be careful.

Wal Mart doesn't have a clue. This is a true story. Girl Friends tv breaks, she calls me saying she really needs a TV, I'm on the road decide to order it online through wal mart and she can go pick it up. I order her a tv, choose pick up at store, hit send. Says tv is out of stock it will arrive in 2 weeks. What the hell, I don't want to wait 2 weeks, I didn't want to wait the 2 days it would of took Amazon to deliver the tv. I go to cancel the order, says I can't cancel because it has been shipped, item is in Transit and you can't cancel while item is intransit. Once again, I'm wtf, I ordered it 2 seconds ago no way theyve already shipped. I call into wal mart, get the yea nothing we can do, they said just wait until you get the notification it's arrived then you can cancel. So, no tv is ordered, I come home and she's like let's go get a tv. So we go to the same wal mart I ordered the tv, no lie walk into the doors and they have the tv I ordered stacked 10 feet high displayed as you walk into the store, grabbed one waited 2 weeks and cancelled the tv I bought online. I'm never ordering anything online again from wal mart.

I live in Europe so don't know exactly about the situation in the US. Yes, amazon is not the cheapest since already a few years. But it is unrivaled in convenience. The products arrive on time (if not ordering from some chinese seller on amz marketplace) and the HUGE plus: Their generous 2 year warranty and return policy. It borders fraud, the victims are mostly marketplace-sellers using amazon fulfillment. A customer can basically claim anything within those 2 years, not even ship the correct stuff back, just anything goes, and will be immediately refunded. Of course for purchases directly from amazon they are not that generous, but still much more compared to the competition.

@Paul S Sort of. If the price is lower than the local store price, then the local store is "paying" by lack of sales. With Health care, the "rest of the First World" has cheaper medical costs for exactly the same procedures, by about 50% reduction. So the US "Health Insurance Companies would be "paying" (by lower "profits") for the new, less expensive, Health Care. Talk to anybody else with "communism" medical coverage (We call it Democratic Socialism)

Walmart isn't actually competing with amazon, amazon is just a distributer and classified ads website. Walmart is actually competing with a million different small businesses. Amazon charges a 20-50% fee to people selling on their website, they make a lot of money with zero work. With the amazon 2 day shipping products people send their junk into a amazon warehouse and then amazon ships it out for the seller when it's ordered. If the products don't sell amazon charges a storage fee, so they make money weather it sells or not. If Walmart's inventory doesn't sell it goes on clearance....which is bought by amazon sellers and amazon gets money from the sellers. Since anyone can sell on amazon it just takes one person on the whole planet to get a really good deal on something and can post it below walmart prices. The people selling on amazon are just running it out of their garage, have zero overhead and can afford to sell it below walmart prices.

Walmart has a long way to go if they wanna catch up to amazon. their delivery is pretty fast and impressive but they need to fix their website UX, filter out the fake and low quality products from 3rd party sellers, improve the Q&A section in every item. amazon has the most helpful Q&A section, when you need to ask a question about an item, someone in the amazon community will reply you as soon as same day for most items. only then maybe walmart could win in ecommerce, especially grocery which they already have an advantage over amazon.

Didn't see it on the gardening section, so I asked an employee and she said that they only sold water hoses in the summer season 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂 But of course that was a lie. At 6 PM I got a notification on the app that the order was “delayed”. Finally around 8:30 PM after calling the centralized customer service number where they put me on a callback wait (since it’s impossible to talk to the store) the customer service person finally was able to talk to someone in the store, and informed me my order would not be ready until the next day. I had driven to town in anticipation of picking up the order, but had no idea they would string me along for that amount of time. I had to work the next day so pickup in the morning was impossible. I wound up canceling the order. I thought waiting in the checkout lines was bad enough, but this exceeded my lowest expectations for Walmart. PS no discounts or any offered on next purchase

I am thinking the opposite. Walmart is too competitor focused, trying to copy what Amazon does. Meanwhile Amazon is customer focused, from the start.

Walmart has seen me through this pandemic. Primenow never had any timeslots and products were sold out as soon as you put them in your cart. But Walmart plus doesn't have that problem and the price is usually cheaper. Walmart is my go to now.

I suffer chronic “what’s for supper?” syndrome. I the past I have tried home cooking kits received through the mail. All the spices included. I enjoyed preparing it. Somehow it made me feel normal again. Eventually though the meal selection became boring. So, being Walmart, having such a wide range of options, it could be endless! I would love to pick and click then stop by and get. Thank you in advance!

Walmart should just pay all that money they are spending to try and "beat Amazon" to their frontline workers...they would get better employees AND more loyalty

I would still use prime over Walmart simply because my subscription with Amazon includes a streaming service. It’s a plus that Walmart cannot provide.
