I would recommend also looking at the Dropp sweater by Ailbíona McLochlainn. It is knit with a contiguous method and had alternative options built in to the pattern for different collars etc.

I’m currently sifting through possible unisex raglan sweaters to knit for my husband. I also find it sometimes difficult to get a good look at some of the features in order to compare… but it’s fun poring through all the photos! Can’t wait to see what you end up m me making! Sari Norland‘s Hanko pullover is another mohair free option - easy to skip the stripes and has a very modern feel to it I think. Also a similar sort of lateral edging for interest and structure.

I did see a podcaster mention she used elastic in the collar of the Marseille. This was Tricolibri, a French podcaster.

Dear Duomo is actually 2 strands of fingering but I used fingering and Suri which I find fills out more than mohair. Just make sure your swatch fabric is what you’re aiming for 😊 I also tested the Lakes Pullover by Ozetta and it was wonderful as well. Worsted weight and I was able to make mine in less than 2 weeks ❤ happy knitting!

I just finished the Dartmoor sweater last night! The braid is an I-cord and then there’s also 2 neck options in the pattern (the one that’s shown in the pictures and the folded neck option). Overall it was a very fun knit and I highly recommend!

I am actually knitting the Winters Pullover from Ozetta. I really love it. Only thing though, I did order the suggested yarn and it was sooooo stiff at the gauge suggested. It really called for bigger needles. So I ended up using Drops Nepal and it is perfect. I never used a pattern so spot on with the gauge and measurements. Really happy with that design.

i have just cast on the dartmoor sweater and I'm already obsessed! there is an option in the pattern for a folded neck so no need for modifications!

What a great idea for content! it's nice seeing more options than only three patterns that show up on my feeds :) I'm also looking for a classing simple sweater pattern and I'm thinking about - monday sweater by petit knit, - dad's sweater that was released lately by gently chaotic knits and - semper sweater by knit purl girl but the options are endless and it's really difficult to choose :D thank you for that video, i hope you're doing fine and happy knitting!

I enjoyed this style video. I like the Dartmoor and added it to my favorites. But I’m older and not real skinny so these oversized sweaters are not real flattering unless they have excellent drape. I plan to downsize to a 3-4 or (large)on most of these. I have a 38-40 bust size so I have been choosing xl’s in these patterns and they are huge on me. The Dartmoor will be a smaller version I think. But I always hesitate when going to new designers. I would love to see you do more of these videos; especially the raglans. I would also like to find an excellent tank top rather than camisole because of bra straps. I want a wider tank scoop neck, boat neck, whatever. Idc but If you could do a video on both cami’s and tanks that’d be great. I really like how you talk through each pattern giving pros and cons for each. Thanks for all the time you took to put this one together.😊

I love this type of video, I would love to see one for raglan sweaters and slipovers! Personally, my money's on the Dartmoor or the Towns Sweater. I love the shoulder detail on the Dartmoor Sweater, and the folded collar is fairly simple to do as shown by Laura of Penrose Knits. I personally love the Towns Sweater because of the length and giant ribbing, but to each their own! I think any of the patterns you chose would be perfect. I'd like to add into the mix the Bayview Sweater and the Partridge Pullover by Knits 'n Knots WPG. The Bayview is similar to the Dartmoor, and the Partridge has a gorgeous seed stitch panel. I wish you all the best in choosing, decisions can be so hard!

This is great because I am looking for a top down sweater to knit for my second sweater attempt after I finish my first one (which is a bottom-up cardigan). There are so many sweaters from which to choose. How to even begin to decide haha! Also, I legit love Merit. Their creamy blush is the best.

What a great video! you have pointed many points that we should all look for when choosing a design, The one thing I have noticed, and usually after knitting a garment, is that the designer often deigns for his/her own body. Two come to mind - Drea Renee Knits - Andrea has admitted that she does not do waist shaping because she is quite straight up and down to the hip. Her designs are lovely but I find for myself ( I have a pronounced waist curve) there is way too much fabric at the back of her relaxed pullovers eg: The Weekender. I made two of them and gave both to my sister who looks fab in them. The other designer is Caitlin Hunter who has quite sloped and softly shaped shoulders so her patterns don't work for me. The Birkin for instance always feel like it is pulling around the shoulder area. Looking at her patterns I see that either the yokes would be way to wide or too tight. I guess with all Designers, clothes are so subjective to who is modelling them. I love looking at all the projects of Ravelry before choosing a design, concentrating on the knitters with body types closest to mine and reading all the notes. So helpful. Thanks Emily, Really good video 💕. BTY I also purchased some BC Yarn Bio this summer at my Local store as it was on sale. It is a beautiful yarn, knitted up really well, but sadly one of those designs that I should have paid more attention to and made it longer in the body for me!!

I really enjoy this kind of video! I knitted the No23 and I really love it, but I do get what you were saying about the bulkyness of fabric under the arms and have been very intrigued by the Dartmoor Sweater! The Marseille Sweater collar really can be fixed with an elastic been sewn in after blocking in my opinion.. at least thats what I did :)

Emily, I also, wanted to mention that I have a video tutorial on the permanent fold. I use it in double neckline trim for the structure. You can adjust my Avaris sweater design to have a folded neckline trim, almost as my Nubia sweater. Or Sassy sweater. They all have step by step video tutorials. I would love to see what you think about raglan sweaters

I've also only ever knitted DK weight equivalents on 4mm needles but I'm currently test knitting the Semper V-Neck Sweater for The Knit Purl Girl which calls for a 4.5mm needle at a 21st gauge worked with 1 strand fingering and 1 strand mohair and I am absolutely loving the drape and feel of the fabric. Will likely seek out patterns specifically with this gauge in future as I live in South Africa which has a much warmer climate so the airier and drapier fabric is ideal. She also has the regular Semper Sweater with a more traditional crew neckline that I highly recommend you check out.

Yes! I’m thinking I’m going to love the 4.5mm knit fabric too 😊 I tend to run warm really easily and often end up wearing my sweaters over my shoulders anyhow lol 😂

I'm currently knitting through the Oslo Sweater by Petite Knit, the Clove Sweater by Rachel Kurihara, and the Dear Duomo Sweater to compare the three raglan designs and the knitting experience! I loved this video and seeing your thoughts on these classic raglan designs. My comparison video of these three designs will probably come in January when I finish the third pattern :)

something about sweater no 23 makes me feel like it would fit a lil weird on someone who is bustier. no shade to anyone who has knit it and loves it, but something about the chest feels weird and i’m not exactly sure why 🤔

I think the gauge does affect the way the sweater sits around different body parts, including the chest. I think I see that as well in the way that the hem doesn’t seem to come near the body.

i knit the marseille without the stripes to make it one solid colour! my 1 gripe with the pattern is the provisional cast-on on the shoulder, I had so much trouble with it and my end result looks messy :( if you look on the pattern page and look at shoulder seams, you can notice it in many other projects as well

Wow I have found this video so helpful! I don’t see many other makers discuss their thought process in the same amount of detail, and I think we share the similar train of thought with making! Could I get your take on my next project? I’ve really wanted to make a cardigan as my next project as my skill progresses and I’m torn between features. It will be my first cardigan, and I hate the idea of knitting flat, but I worry that steeking might be too advanced for me. I already have the yarn selected, but I want to make sure that I will really love wearing it as well as learn the construction of it. Yarn I will be using will be the baby wool by WAK ( heavy DK, supposed to be aran) and mohair/silk by Sandges garn. Torn between the Felix Cardigan (for it’s simple construction) but worry it may be too simple to show off the yarn I want to use. Also thinking something by petite knit but worry her cardigans may be too complicated. What are your thoughts, or what process would you take to narrow down?

This is a great question! I would suggest a top down cardigan with a similar shoulder construction to your favorite in the round sweaters! I think going flat will be the most straightforward construction (really not that bad at your gauge). My pattern recommendations would ultimately depend on your experience with short rows. I think the champagne cardigan is my favorite design overall and although it is an ambitious project, it is very clearly explained.

I love the champagne cardigan and worried about it being too out of my comfort zone but I feel like if I’m investing both time and money I want it to feel just as luxurious as the yarn and time spent. I find so many sweater patterns have such little differences to the ‘naked eye’ or inexperienced knitter (specifically when it comes to comparing finer details) I only seem to notice the details when I’m knitting it up, then realize I won’t like the final product!!!😆 how does the Louvre sweater compare to these? The one you made looks fabulous on you! Thanks for this great video! Would love to see a cardigan version😊

Great question! One thing I love about the Louvre is the way the neck fits. I think since it’s a raglan, there is a more obvious effect of gravity around the tops of the shoulders. I think I also got lucky with the perfect gauge and mount of ease in the Louvre. In my opinion, raglans can look a little bit more dressy/less formal than drop shoulders, but that’s mostly because I associate drop shoulders with sweatshirts!

I really love ozetta's patterns, the only thing I'm a little bit concerned about is the place where you oick up stitches for sleeves, sometimes it just looks a little bit odd. I really enjoyed this video, would love one about cardigans as well!

I live in perpetual summer so I'm mainly use cotton and bamboo blends - my short rows look atrocious in my Marseille Sweater *I did frog it because I was learning continental for a stranded project in the future, not because of the yarn choice. I don't really have much of a choice where I live 😂

Hi there! I’m not entirely sure what sentiments you’re referring to specifically in this video. However, if my suspicion is correct, you’re referring to some of my comments on the size inclusivity of some patterns from My Favorite Things Knitwear. The knitting community on social media is ultimately driven by people and how their values inform their choices. This includes yarn selections, pattern selections, and ultimately what we choose to support through our time, money, and public sharing of knitting. I feel that a big part of crafting is intentionality and developing an awareness of how crafting has influenced my values. I value inclusivity, and this encompasses size inclusivity. I think it is equally political to knit non-size inclusive patterns and say nothing compared to making an effort to research size inclusive patterns and support designers who do this. Most of my viewers and supporters express an interest in continuing conversations about size inclusivity to encourage positive change in the community, not to shut down individuals. My Favorite Things Knitwear has responded to this feedback in the community by increasing her size range in a recent pattern, and I celebrate this. Of course, you can knit just to enjoy knitting, but ultimately the monetization of the craft have launched it into a place where the investment of time and money do cause people to take pause before making choices about what to knit. On the note of virtue signalling, I have never implicitly or explicitly tried to virtue signal through sharing my opinions on KZread. I welcome you to take a look at my video “Cami No.7 by My Favorite Things Knitwear & Louvre Sweater by Petite Knit // knitting podcast no. 21” where I address some questions about my position on size inclusivity and ultimately explicitly declare that I don’t believe my position on the topic is necessarily correct, but it is one I am at peace with. I gave you a real chance and watched the entire video. Sorry but you've lost me. This is really about nothing. Firstly, I don't get why you need a pattern for a basic sweater. Secondly, whenever I select a pattern, I inevitably change it to suit me eg I shorten the sleeves, lengthen the basque and often adjust the neckline. And finally, as an aside, that heathered grey colour will be very ageing on you.
