This is the real Chicago from 69-78. The Terry Kath years. He gave them an edge with his lead vocals, backgrounds and guitar work, so during those years even though there were many ballads, he was still there to balance things out. When he died, he took the soul, and balls of Chicago with him. Anything from this album, number 2 and #5 and some of 7 is well worth listening to because they were at their most experimental and diverse. Thank you for reacting to this. More people need to hear early Chicago and the great Terry Kath. by the way, there are plenty of examples of them playing this live especially the killer version on youtube of them in Louisville KY. Peter Cetera is an original member and a fantastic bass player/singer in his own right, and he was very much an integral part of this lineup.

That's because Terry was the soul of the band. All the other band members had said he was the one guy they looked to during any gig for direction. Btw, Kath was also one of the best guitarist of his era, monster chops and self-taught. Cetera was not so much a founding member but was a member a couple years before they cut this first album. He's killing on bass on these early albums, an he was originally a guitar player who took up playing bass - he played with a pick rather than fingers until Chicago III. In fact there are a few Chicago recordings he played guitar on, and Terry or their producer played the bass.

Peter Cetera actually was in the group from the start, so he is the bass player on this song. The original band was: Peter Cetera on bass, Terry Kath on guitar, Robert Lamm on keyboards, Lee Loughnane on trumpet, James Pankow on trombone, Walter Parazaider on woodwinds, and Danny Seraphine on drums. Cetera, Kath, and Lamm shared lead vocal duties. Cetera began to emerge as the most-frequent lead singer in 1973. Their sound was already evolving long before Kath died (which wasn't until '78). However, Kath was unhappy with the changes in style and was reportedly planning to leave the group out of frustration. Once he'd passed away, the band's style really went softer and more "pop"-like, especially after producer David Foster got involved with them in '81, remaining their producer until '86. Currently, 4 of the original 7 members are still in the band (Seraphine left in 1990).

The band sound didn’t change as part of “becoming commercial.” Of course there was evolution, but there were three carrying the vocals, including Cetera, however the shift you are referring to in Chicago is mostly the absence of the soulful voice and world-beating guitar of Terry Kath after his untimely death. Early Chicago, did in fact have commercial success and had all the exposure a music act could hope for in the USA at the time. One of the greatest aspects to the greater awareness of the post-Kath era were the hits that were on the new MTV phenomenon of the 80s. This too was successful, naturally, but the loss of Terry Kath as a guitar genius, singer-songwriter and arranger was like if the Beatles had lost Paul or John in ‘67 … the sound would have changed out of new challenge the cherished tunes of the last albums would either not exist or be radically different. The change was gradual in style, and Terry’s era was as long as the Beatles were together. If you explore the albums of 69-74 you will better understand how the band experimented in the studio. Live, the old songs were performed, not only the new. This was a band that enjoyed creativity of improvisation and spontaneity of jazz and blues and brought it to a rock sound that was all their own. Those who lived through this early era of CTA / Chicago will be taken back a bit by the use of “commercial” as a description, yet your observation is understandable. Just keep in mind that they were a musical phenomenon that was extremely successful for these times. The tragic loss of Kath, was like replacing Page, Blackmore, or Hendrix- save like Clapton Terry could sing as well. The loss of Kath plus the 80’s taste for synths and ballads that could feed the hunger for MTV are more likely causes than changing due to wanting a more “commercial” sound. Another great reaction choice. Tracking the variety found in early Chicago is a worthwhile rabbit-hole to explore! 👍🏻

He said I couldn't for the Turtles but I could for the opening act. Didn't know much about their music yet but I looked over at the drum cases a few feet away and saw the name "Daniel Seraphine-Chicago Transit Authority". What amazed me was the tight horn section, and the great Terry Kath on guitar. And these guys looked really young. Great memory. PS-And they were way better than the Turtles.

This is the Chicago I knew best. My small high school jazz ensemble did a cover of Introduction in 1972 for music contests and came in first several times. Thanks in part to the director's transcription. Needless to say the changing time signatures and tempo changes required plenty of dedication and rehearsal. Chicago's early hits, Make Me Smile, Beginnings, and 25 or 6 to 4, became the staple of many high school pep bands, marching bands and drum corps in the 70s. The opening guitar riff of 25 or 6 to 4 eventually got banned in music stores for being overplayed.

They did do it live. This was the first song on the first album and was appropriately titled: Introduction, and that is what it was. ( by the way, how many rock bands feature a trombone solo) . Peter Cetera was an OG member of the band, that's him on bass. The guy with gravely voice and the nasty guitar 🎸 licks was Terry Kath. He died stupidly playing with an "unloaded" gun. They became a ballad band. Hard to fill Terry Kath's shoes. A lot of time Chicago had all 3 vocalist trading off verses and doing some nifty harmonies. First few albums were double record albums, some you'll love..others not so much (I'm looking at you: "Free Form Guitar") Try: "In the Country " for a fine example of Pete and Terry sharing vocals. Plus. It rocks!

Check out the 2016 documentary about band history by Peter Pardini called Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago. Yeah, Terry Kath (the singer here, and lead guitarist until his death) was the drive in this group and Peter Cetera was the nail in their coffin to me. Terry Kath the Guitar player wrote this tune, It's amazing how many time signatures it went through and how he arranged the Horns. Terry put a Humbucker Pickup on a Telecaster Guitar and played through a PA with Radio Shack Speakers, He put chicken Wire around the PA to Cancel out Police & Fire Dept Broadcasts that would bleed into live performances! Melvin Perry is correct. Terry was killed when his Pistol accidentally discharged. His death stunned Musicians as many felt his best was yet to come. Jimi Hendrix became an instant Fan of Chicago, When he heard Terry play he began to tell Guitarists, "I heard this Band Chicago and they have this Amazing Guitarist who is as good as I am." Thank you for honoring Terry Kath and the Band Chicago. Rest in Peace Terry, Your music is still touching lives and getting Reactions.

The documentary left me with one thought I’m still ruminating about. A band mate of Terry’s said that Terry’s death saved the lives of all the other band members. Because Terry died, Chicago lived. WOW!

This is when Chicago "Chicago Transit Authority," was just starting out. They were nasty, gritty, and soulful. Then they became "Chicago," a couple of years later. They transformed into a different Band, with a different sound. Lots of Horns, and musical arrangements and, just different. I liked them as they were in the beginning as "CTA.' Oh well, they were obviously a great Band in the end.

watch the chicago doc.... it explains that Terry Kath could not read or write music but he had this piece of music composed in his head and that Keyboardist Robert Lamm charted it for him.....Terry had composed it to introduce the different band members.....after running thru it a few times in rehearsal.....the band recorded it LIVE in one take.

Peter Cetera was in the band from the beginning. He was the bass player and sang some of the songs. But they were much more rocking back then. Peter was in the band until the 80s when he left to go solo. It was after Terry Kath died that they started changing their sound. They even did a disco song (Street Player) on Chicago XIII. But for the most part it was the same band members when they went more commercial. But Peter's ballady songs started getting the most airplay so he kind of took over. I like all phases of this band, but nothing can touch the early stuff. The 3 singers are Peter, Terry Kath (who sang this song) and Robert Lamm.

Listen to poem 58 from the same album or just listen to the whole album . Their first album was the best and they gradually diminished in my opinion. Was it really 53 years ago when I first heard that album ? Yes !

You nailed it on the head on EVERY point, but two. One, Peter Cetera was already in the band by this time - and playing some kick-butt bass on this song. Two, Chicago still plays Introduction at the beginning of their concerts. I have long felt (for nearly 50 years) that Introduction is THE greatest song in the history of rock-n-roll. Its composer, Terry Kath, is criminally underrated both as a songwriter and as a guitarist. Before you mentioned it, I had never thought of Introduction as a movie theme, but I can envision it now. Perhaps if some visionary producer/director included Introduction in his/her film, Terry Kath (nearly 45 years after his death) might finally get the credit he deserves, both as a songwriter and as the finest rock guitarist ever.

Terry Kath was a tour de force, the band members referred to him as their quarterback. The old Chicago and the new Chicago were the same members after Kath's death. What was missing was his writing and rocking attitude. The biggest change In personnel was they had to hire two guitarist to replace him. But no one could ever replace his soulful voice or how he brought out the best in the others. Peter cetera is a phenomenal bass player, this song is a prime example he crushed it, but later on after Kath's death he didn't play to his full potential.

CHICAGO, "INTRODUCTION"... THIS ARE THE DAYS OF THEIR GREATNESS. IT ALL LEFT AFTER LEAD GUITAREST TERRY KATH'S DEATH. AND THOSE GIRLY SONGS STARTED. THOSE EARLY DAYS WERE THE BEST, IN MY WAY OF THINKING. THE SOULFUL, JAZZ, ROCK AND ROLL SO PLEASING TOO THE EAR..

Only three of the original lineup are touring together. From the original lineup Terry Kath (guitar, lead vocals) died of a self-inflicted accidental gunshot to the head. Peter Cetera (bass, lead vocals) quit to go solo, Danny Seraphine (drums) was fired, Walt Parazaider (woodwinds, sax) left touring for health reasons (he now has Alzheimer's, had heart problems too). Original members Robert Lamm (keyboards, lead vocals), James Pankow (trombone) and Lee Loughnane (trumpet) still tour as Chicago with several additional players & singers. For several years they added a percussionist from Brazil, Laudir de Oliveira (1973-1981) first as a session player on Chicago VI then becoming a full member. In 1981 he was asked to leave the band to make room for another player. Laudir went on to perform with other groups before returning to Brazil in 1987. Laudir died of a heart attack during a performance in Rio 2017.

The story I heard growing up, is the Chicago was a creation of the band's original Producer, that he chose up the musicians, then put them in a big old farmhouse he had rented, and just had them write music for a month. When you know that story, the song 25 or 6 to 4 makes perfect sense.

Well, as usual, a great reaction, Harri. You wondered how they could do this live. Well, I just heard them do it….literally last week. The new touring version of Chicago is not the powerhouse that the original band was (saw them three times in the seventies), but not bad either. They had three original members but everyone could play, and they opened with this number (Robert Lamm sang it instead of the dearly departed Mr. Kath). They have two of the original horn guys, Pankow and Loughnane, and they can still both blow. One of my fave Chicago tune. Glad you got to hear it.

The members composed the charts and performed the parts written and arranged by the group with very little variation from each theme within the context of acid rock improvisation.
