Can Saints finally answer some big OL questions at OTAs? | Inside Black & Gold

Спорт

It’s time to talk about practice - and this time, it’s voluntary. On the latest episode of the Audacy original podcast Inside Black & Gold, New Orleans Saints sideline reporter Jeff Nowak and WWL Sports Director Steve Geller dive in on some of the big questions as the team hits the field for the first of three sets of OTAs, the latest on Marshon Lattimore and Chase Young, we dive in on Scott Shanle’s take on Derek Carr, schedule predictions and a lot more.
0:00 - Segment 1: Are You Ready for Saints OTAs? Latest on Marshon Lattimore, Chase Young, More
... The New Orleans Saints have a lot of questions to answer this offseason, and we’ll finally start to get some of them with the first set of OTAs on tap. So what are we expecting? Jeff Nowak and Steve Geller kick off today’s episode by diving in on the latest surrounding Marshon Lattimore, Chase Young, the shuffling OL (is Lucas Patrick the guy to watch at LG?) and a lot more.
20:43 - Segment 2: Are Saints Fans Being Reasonable About Derek Carr? Let’s Talk About It
... The Derek Carr discourse can be rough these days, but is it reasonable? Jeff and Steve hear from former New Orleans Saints linebacker Scott Shanle on just that subject and share their thoughts. Also, stop talking about the contract for the 15th-highest-paid QB in the NFL as if it’s a major problem. Please, we beg you.
51:25 - Segment 3: Should the Saints Play Sean Payton a Tribute Video (We Say No.)
... The New Orleans Saints have a daunting first seven weeks that they finish off with a reunion showdown against Sean Payton, but how exactly should they handle it? Jeff Nowak and Steve Geller close out today’s episode by breaking down their thoughts on that matchup (a tribute video?) with an assist from Cam Jordan, win totals, schedule predictions and more.

This idea that Carr isn't a good leader is just bullshit. How many times did Aikman, Kelly, Manning, and Brady get pissed off at their offensive players when they phucked up? They did it often. You guys get pissed when Carr when Carr got upset with Olave, and when he got on his offensive line, but for some strange reason you forgot that he was getting KILLED continually behind that shytty offensive line, and their shytty play led to his injuries. As for Olave, how many times did he go half ass of screw up after Carr got on him?

Carr has always worked with his receivers in the offseason, always had a good attitude and no problems with his receivers until this past year with Cancer MT. He just got frustrated early because of the pitiful offensive line and receivers being lost in space, plus he was injured. People forget about Shaheed too. Even though I love him, he did mess up too at times, like turning the wrong way in the end zone that would have resulted in a tying TD against the Texans. Olave also made poor attempts at a couple of long passes in that game. That is when Carr blew up at No Clue Carmichael on the sideline. Carr has been terribly misjudged by this ridiculously negative fan base. I think it’s a combination of a core that wanted Winston to start and a hatred of DA who was seen as the one who got Carr, even though (they forget) it was the beloved Brees and Mannings who were also instrumental in getting Carr here. But Carr, being the consummate professional that he is, called all the receivers and got on the same page with them and finished the season as the hottest QB. They even hated DA for taking up for his QB in the press conference after one of the wins. Really? Isn’t that what a coach is supposed to do - take up for his QB? Some of these fans are really sick.

And another thing he was misjudged on by some of the groupthink fans was the notion that they thought he had the attitude that he was coming in as a savior and also what they thought was a big contract. If they would have given Carr a chance and did their homework on him they would know that he was a good Christian guy and he doesn’t have that kind of an attitude. He just wants to win. And they would have also figured out, like I and others tried to tell them, that 150 million 4 year contract was an average QB salary for starting QB’s. But the sheeple did not want to hear it. Carr was the over paid outsider with the Savior complex so they turned on him. So much for “southern hospitality” and “Christian” Louisiana.

Brees had one coach and one system for 15 years with the Saints. Carr has had 7 coaches in 10 years. He was convinced to come to the Saints by the Mannings and Brees because he was told the Saints were a stable organization with good coaching. Instead, he faced the worst offensive line performance for the first 6 weeks in NFL history, young receivers lost in space for half the year, a sub par OC nicknamed by me as No Clue Carmichael, and no running support. And yet he still carried the Saints from 22 ranked offense to 9, and was the 10th ranked QB for season and #1 ranked for the last 6 weeks. No he is not mid. A mid QB would not have carried the Saints to 9 wins. I’m am so excited to see what Carr will do with an actual NFL OC, as well as QB coach, receivers coach and most importantly OL coach.

@@LilRedRasta Nope. That’s another lie everyone keeps on repeating. DA was fired 4 games into his rookie year. In 2016, he led the Raiders to a 12-3 record and was an MVP candidate before breaking his leg. That offseason, his offensive coordinator was fired. The following year, his head coach was fired. Then Gruden came in with a complete team rebuild. His #1 receiver in 2019 was the almost 40 year old Jordy Nelson. The defense in 2020 was historically bad, giving up over 30 points a game average and had less sacks and turnovers than the 1982 Lions. No team who had a defense that averaged more than 30 points a game has ever won more than 5 games. The Raiders won 8 that year with Carr. In 2021, SF offered two #1 draft picks as well as a #2 and #3 for Carr and Gruden turned them down. SF went on to draft Trey Lance 3rd overall who was a bust. The Raiders started the season as a top 3 offense. Then after 5 games Gruden happened. Then Ruggs happened. But Carr still rallied his team with an interim head coach and Zay Jones as his #1 receiver to win the last four games to make the playoffs and kicked Wonder Boy Hebert out the playoffs his last game and should have beat Second Coming Burrow in the playoffs had they had better officiating. Then Bright Mark fires the interim head coach and hires McDummy as his next coach. Then McDummy lets Carr go for no draft picks. I guarantee you that had Carr had the same coach and system like Walk on Water Brees had for his entire career with the Saints, that he and Carr would have comparable numbers, and Carr’s may have been better, because Carr has better arm talent and arm strength than Brees, plus as Underhill pointed out Carr has a higher 3 step back pass completion percentage than Brees had and that was Brees’ specialty.

Thanks for trying to push against what Steve called the mob mentality against Carr. I’ve been calling it groupthink. Whatever you call it, it is quite embarrassing that the fans would turn on Carr like this. And because of their hatred of Carr, they are jumping on the Rattler bandwagon, as Jeff says, despite him not even playing a down in the NFL. I’ve been talking to a friend at the gym about the Saints and in previous conversations he admitted he only follows the Saints when they are winning. But last time, he was all gleamy eyed talking about Rattler and saying he might be starting by mid season. Him being a casual fan indicates that he is just repeating what he is hearing from others. Carr impressed me playing through a few different injuries. That couldn't have been easy. To me though, if Carr gets rattled in a game, he has a really hard time recovering. During the Falcons game (1st ATL game), Bruce Irving made a sack on him. Irving had played with Carr at the Raiders and the commentator mentioned that Irving knew if Atlanta could hit him enough, he'd go into the tank. Hopefully the Saints running game is much improved and Carr doesn't have to press as much?

Yes, he would have lost some games with his reckless style, but he would have put the team in a better position to win others. Just watch Jameis will come in mid season for the Browns once Deshaun falls flat, and he will take them to the playoffs just like Flacco did.

And Brady almost always had a top 10 defense and coaches cheating for him so he can get home field advantage in the worst division for 15 years and barely win 3 point Super Bowls. Bottom line is every QB messes up at times but when Carr does it it’s magnified and when others do it it’s ignored. I would put Carr’s arm talent and QB smarts up against any QB in the league.

Carr was simply not a good fit for the Saints last season. It was a foolish move by the Saints front office to sign him. Fans understand this and are justifiably upset. It’s not Carr‘s fault that he couldn’t live up to expectations, but the fans negativity is understandable despite the late season improvement in Carr‘s stats.

Carr is not the kind of pinpoint passer you need for a „Saints-style“ offense. His release is a little to slow as are his reads. He tends to hold on to the ball too long in the pocket, which makes his offensive line look worse than it is. In a word he is FAR from being an elite player in 2024.
