    @@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines It's not the most ridiculously unrealistic thing to do either. I know plenty of roads near me particularly in urban settings which have been reduced from national speed limit to 50mph for large sections. If you have a lot of slip roads in quick succession with a lot of vehicles merging and changing lanes reducing the speed limit can help improve traffic flow by reducing the concertina effect you get with people tailgating and then braking hard which then ripples back to the people who are tailgating the tailgater etc. 10mph might be pushing it though :P

    The two biggest things you did that positively affected traffic flow were installing the highway ramps and installing the metro. I would have also added a few underpasses between the two sides of the city where the elevated highway splits it so people can cross the highway without merging in with the highway traffic at its end.

    I think it was just a classic case of stage freight and nerves. Biffa doesn't really stream live and was doing a double whammy in the form of a competition of the best Cities Skylines streamers AND it was his speciality. Traffic. He was doomed to fail. A good example is a professional footballer who in practice scores amazing penalties but when it comes to the crunch, they fumble. It's something overcome with experience. Biffa was approaching it spot on initially but then regressed into a similar tactic of the others (throwing roads everywhere) and adding tons of ferries, which caused more issues than it solved. Next time this won't be a problem for sure.

    It looks like you need another entrance to the city/exit to highway, especially for that industrial zone located deep inside the city on the islands. Since you have only 1 highway connection (to the outside the city), the importing/exporting trucks are gonna mix up with commute, deliveries, service vehicles and all the other traffics traveling inside the city. I think that's why those industrial buildings are abandoned after failing to sell the goods they've produced (or having not enough raw materials imported).

    Hello Biffa, as a traffic planer i can tell you reducing the speed of a road isnt an exploit really. Capacity of roads increases with slower speeds cause distance decreases between vehicles and hence density increases.

  • @DeadlyDan

    @DeadlyDan

    2 жыл бұрын

    This is true BUT you COULD NOT reduce the speed to this amount on a highway. It would be catastrophic in terms of accidents. In the real world if a highway has an accident they usually have a phased reduction in speed limit along with electronic signage (In the UK at least). In big expanses where there is little to no traffic people naturally speed up (and yes, ignore speed limits - by a vast amount), when it comes to the higher volume areas the highway will not clear traffic quick enough at this speed and pose a significant risk for those coming up the highway at a great speed. What this game does not simulate is human ego, road rage and survival instincts. People do not even overtake or undertake.

Say: start with 100 points, lose a point for every building lost. If you lose no buildings get an extra 100; lose more than 100, lose an additional 100. Get 50 points per place up for traffic percentages. Put in a fixed speed limit per road type, so no fenegeling there..

Unless, of course, I didn't understand completely the exercise and what can and cannot be done. Anyways, biffa, you are and will be the grand traffic fix master! That is why we should always be aware of our mental state, and then stay focused, organised, do not think too far ahead because prior things will change the context for which we make projects, so we lost time thinking too much ahead. The best way to organise thoughts and not waste some focus time is to sort problems into 3 categories : solvable now, solvable later, unsolvable. Trash the unsolvable and live with them, do first the solvable now, then start on the solvable later. This is how I passed an oral exam with flying colours while I arrived 30mn late completely soaked wet because I had a car accident coming and it was pouring like hell, my knee was hurting... but well I knew my stuff... the body is waterproof and cars are just material ... normal life !! I probably did even better than if it was boring normal, because I had no time to stress about the exam, strangely I was amazingly relaxed, I had nothing to loose.

    One exploit you could totally use is just using traffic manager to essentially create a one way network. If drivers don't actually have a choice what way to turn most of the time it drastically reduces congestion, at the cost of their trip becoming a labyrinth, but traffic flow doesn't care about that. A cheap optimisation you could have made here would just be to ban parking on roads with high amounts of traffic though, especially near your roundabouts. Parking just kills traffic sometimes.

    Just to share, 'cause I know Biffa felt disappointed on the Redbull Traffic Challenge: (I think) What happened was that Biffa is focusing on fixing the traffic, making it work with its current road network, without adding unnecessary roads (like Highway Bridges on the ocean, like what the others did; hell of an expense, and really doesn't make sense for a realistic functioning city); either, upgrading, adding or removing connections, and even adding a Ferry system. And watching his videos made me think that with his way of 'fixing traffic' (meticulous and realistic) cannot really make the cars ride smoothly in under 30 minutes, considering many factors like road traffic, car volume, road sizes, etc. I highly praise Biffa ❤️

    I would have connected the lumber yard to the highway directly by building a new bridge, and I would have made some neighborhood connections by building out some streets under the elevated highway (such an easy opportunity to improve access). I would have built just 1 new highway connection interchange near the city border.

    I think that in a challenge like this, you have to go against your nature. As an example, ferries are very good, but they take a fair bit of time to create and don't always bring results right away. This time going to metros right away is a big step in getting people out of cars and into public transit. That is a great move and gets you going the right way very quickly. It also calms down some of the red areas in the traffic as well. You may have also considered an interchange on the income road at the island near the bottom, connecting directly to the right most island. You may be able to create a sort of ring road that would encourage people to go at least in part the other direction instead of through the middle to get to the highway. Overall, I think the winning move here is the metros. You got the most bang for your buck in a very short amount of time.

    Honestly, as a engineer from the USofA, The main roundabouts could've been replaced by a freeway continuing onto the islands, where it terminates. Then, the main roundabouts could stay, but would have on/offramps for smoother flow, bypassing the chaos in the downtown area. Also, another main road through the industry island could've maybe done the trick.

    CPP pointed out on his discord that the reason Spiff got such a high number quickly is that the traffic info panel measures flow, and as slower roads are going to have more flow because the cars are always moving, it rates them higher. More cars on the road that can keep moving, all the time, as Spiff realised that the red only came from the cars not moving.

    My only thoughts: 1. The sheer number of cul-de-sacs: it looks like they specifically set them up to be ALMOST connected. 2. Bike lanes - although it looks like there at the end the bike highway only pulled people from the metro, as opposed to driving, so it may have been diminishing returns at that point. 3. Heh - yeah, connect he ferries properly. I honestly thought you knew something about ferries, that people could get to them without being connected to roads, or something. 4. Busses - which you managed to get in at the end, but the cul-de-sacs prevented having more useful routes, I think. 5. Tunnel under the highway so that it doesn't split the city in half? Honestly, it looked like most of the traffic issues there at the end wouldn't have been solved by mass transit: I think it was more freight and simple busyness of those main intersections.

  • @okamishiranui7841
    @okamishiranui78412 жыл бұрын

    Well, the issue is that the traffic is bottlenecking since there's only 1 reliable connection to each part of town. Like the highway exit roundabout you made, that's the only thing connecting the left and right parts of the main city. Perhaps adding a couple of roads that connect the 2 separate parts of town would spread the traffic more evenly; and maybe a few more bridge connections to the other islands while you're at it. Notice how the metro lines alleviates this issue because cims can travel to the other sides of town without interruption. Also I would have extended the highway straight up until the industrial area so that trucks can get onto the highway quickly without having to cut through the other zones. Perhaps you can get the traffic to 85+% if you did that. At any rate I was amazed you can solve this quickly, roundabouts and laning priorities are indeed strong tools for traffic fixing. But I understand you're getting pressured by the timer; I probably would have done worse myself lol. Nevertheless, good work Biffa and cheers~
