Can you install an operational Roman shade from a curtain rod or a decorative rod? Yes! In this video you will learn how to do it, how and where to install the rod, what type of rod to use, and what problems to watch out for. This will work for any type of functional shade that is made in the traditional method with shade rings and cords, including cloud shades, balloon shades, flat, pleated, and soft fold hobbled shades.

I like that this also helps make the Roman shades more washable which is especially useful in kitchens.

My window is 52.5 inches wide. Do I need to use dowels or just rings? Thank you for all the tips on your videos!!

You can just use rings if they are spaced correctly and you don't mind more cords! Make sure your rows are between 9-12" apart across the width of the shade (12" for stiffer fabrics. 9-10" for average or lightweight fabrics). Dowels are great if you want less cords or like the look of the horizontal stitching, otherwise, not necessary :)

This is just what I was looking for! I purchased some rods for two double hung windows and ended up putting a window fan in one and a AC unit in the other. Roman shades were a perfect solution for the cooling season when the fan and AC unit are in place. I needed something that wouldn't billow into the stairwell where one of the windows was located. In addition, I wanted something neat and contemporary looking. I settled on a folding roman shade. But what to do with those rods I bought? Love that I can wash the shades easily.....that was the only concern of mine when deciding on a roman shade. (I'm not a fan of velcro, but perhaps that would have been an answer.) This is the perfect method for me....I can use my cute rods and still have my roman shade. Thanks!

Thanks for this video. Im looking forward to making shades for my bedroom. Can you make the shade without the piece of wood at the bottom so the curtain scallops instead of being straight?

Good question! So in this situation the scalloped hem is made differently than a straight hem, but the weight rod is still important and located several inches above the decorative bottom. Maybe I’ll do a video showing that at some point!

Can I make 1 extra wide shade for a double window or do I need to make 2 separate smaller shades? I. Going to use curtain rod(s) and eye hooks along window frame.

You can make 1 double shade but I’d strongly recommend 2 separate shades that can share the rod. That gives you a break between them for a center support for the rod (a must) and your shade won’t have seams showing where you sew the widths together. It’s also much easier to be accurate on a smaller shade :)

Hi, thanks for these clear tutorials - I’m looking forward to trying! A couple of questions… if I have a very small window… in a camper van…Just 28 cm height including 7cm above window to the obstruction above. How small can I make the ring gaps so it folds up tight - to get as much of the fabric off the window when it’s all folded up? And how little can I get away with at bottom edge? I saw your first video where it said you leave 12” at bottom to create rod pocket and bottom edge…but that seems very large given my tiny windows 😥 Thanks

Wow, that's a really small window!! So, I'd say the smallest vertical ring spacing to still get nice folds is 4". That will give you 2" folds. It will work best if your fabric is not thick. Your bottom hem would be finished at 3", with the first ring on the top of the hem. That way when it's pulled up with 2" folds and inch will extend below the bottom fold. Sorry it's in inches - we Americans refuse to use the metric system for some reason 😂

Can I use a tension rod?

I think you could under the right circumstances. The problem is that a tension rod has to be installed inside the window, and it might be tricky to find a place to put the screw eyes below the rod.
