I've went down the Red wine road while watching.
Its had the tailgate and most of the interior from a higher spec V6 Sterling fastback - a previous keeper had just salvaged the 820i badges from the original and plonked the above the Sterling one. Makes me feel old to think that even the earliest of these facelift 800s are now approaching 33 years old now. Once again a great find and hugely entertaining rescue! 👍👍

yeah i was thinking that's had an interior from the higher spec, and boot lid. I am suspecting that those popped up at a decent price for the owner at the time, shame they never got the wheels though. If that had been me doing that, id have gone the full smash, and had rear doors been electric too, rather than the manual. I bet these are getting tricky for bits now, as most yards wont keep cars in this age, plus many of these were binned off well before their time, when rover went bust. The bottom of old rovers just dropped out. So dealer were just Weighing these in left right and centre, some of the turbo ones were getting their engines pulled for the Rover 200.
My Dad had one , V6 sterling , I borrowed it to drive to the south of France about 2004 . Amazing drive fully loaded 3 kids sat all day at 120 by far the most comfortable car I've ever driven . Even after 8 hrs in the seat . Light steering and and very positive on the road . Effortless.
Used to have an 820Si in storm grey. It was a very civilised way to travel. One thing to mention. The 2 litre T series didn't suffer from the head gasket issues (kinda). The only thing you generally get with them is a small weep of oil from the front of the engine on the passenger side. This is due to the block which is identical to that in a 2 litre O series fitted to a Maestro or Montego.

That 'small weep' was just that and nothing of concern. "They all do that sir......". My M16 certainly did and lasted over 120,000 miles before regular PCV cleans were required due to blow-by. I don't know if the T series was any better than the M16, but that stupid grille on the front of the bonnet 'uglified' a once handsome car.
I recently saw an 820i sedan and it's a beautiful car in person, there are a couple of Rovers that are still being driven in the area I live in!
Glad you got that classic Rover back on the road well done.

@andynix8718 not even a proper rover 🙄. It's a 90s job his p4 is classic rover and his p6
I always hankered for a 800 Fastback, and you are right, that car had a lot more to give, even at 110,000+ miles. Do the 600, the mid to late 90s Rovers were superb. I had a 620Si, and later got the fire-breathing 623GSi, and she was a quick sort and a sublime drive, they were both autos but the quality, the interior, and the 623 had full leather, it was an epic place to be. Honestly, well done, I loved every minute. If you fancy the King of the Rovers - do a P6, the engineering quality will blow you away (the rust might not) but they are big on Rover DNA. KBO, my friend. Love this channel.

If the alternator is not charging might be worth an exercise to look at it first before replacing it. If the bearings are ok and windings complete then usually it is just the diode pack. A new alternator can be £100 or more but a diode pack is around £20. A bit more hassle but might be useful footage for a KZread as well as saving costs. (Actually quite easy to change out a diode pack) 😊
@richardhemingway6084

I thought the same. The usual thing with alternators that have been stood around, is the slip rings, brushes and holder sticking.
I used to be a rover mechanic in a dealer in Northern Ireland. I love the 800 series. I'll have one someday, hard to get over here now. Get yourself an 827, big difference

You can buy my 827 when I’ve finished with it! Great cars.
I think you are the most lovable, comedic looney on KZread. I’m sitting here giggling my bits off. Superb!!!!
Apart from electrical issues a major issue arose as councils started installing speed bumps everywhere - The 820's didn't like them seeing the bottom ball joints poping out of the cup in the lower arm , not pretty . Peugeot 405's used a similar ball joint ( screwed in instead of push in and circlip ) and had a similar issue when after market ones were fitted and the threads were wrong , whole thing came out . Then not long after - the new Cavaliers were recalled after their lower arms were snapping off where the ball joints were rivetted on seeing a lot of new car's wrote off . Cure was to grind off the rivets and replace the ball joint with a bolt on one . Sort of a 90's thing that kept me busy ... Now we have the crappy aluminium arms and linkages that just snap off iff you try driving up a kerb lol .... An old " get it through the MOT " thing was to remove the dash and cut the circuit board track going to the ABS warning light and solder in a jumper wire from the alternator charge light so the ABS came on and went off as the engine started .Rovers / Montego's / Maestro's , so worth taking a look behind the dash just incase .
I worked for a taxi firm that ran these, it helped we had a rover mechanic looking after them, but they all did intergalactic mileage. Look up Tony pond taking an 827 around the isle of man

That was great Ben, couldn't believe it when it fired up so sweetly on that old petrol. A really nice car with some classic 90's looks. Well done mate.
Another fantastic TC episode with yet more graphic descriptions. This channel tends towards being a cross between a Haynes manual and Viz. Nothing beats the reference to the camel in a previous ep. though......brilliant

Bargetastic viewing on a lazy Saturday. I have fond memories of my dad working for Rover selling them new and bringing the demo’s home. 827 SLI felt rapid

Rover designed and made L series diesel very stout and reliable! Confession: I nodded when you asked if the brake lights work! I am really enjoying the channel.. Great combo of cars from our youth and cheerfulness. That interior was put in by someone who was from the 'ah, fuck it' school of motor engineering and car restoration.
Thanks for a great video man. And double thanks for that road trip clip. It put the shine on an already great day. Good choice of music too.
I personally for a range of reasons used my Lidl petrol pressure washer.. it's helps remove loose panels & trim...also for Environmental reasons the more I use it the closer the Beach will come to my house... it's undoubtedly the absolute business & time saved cutting any loosey bits off
British legend with japanese roots, it's actually a Honda Legend.
Enjoyed this one Ben. I had one of these in the late '90s, did a lot of miles in it, excellent car, totally reliable and very comfortable :)
Excellent Ben, thank you for the entertainment and laughter 😂
Ben you do make me laugh , love the two option opening back windows .😂 It turned out to be a pretty good car I wasn't expecting it to be so solid .

Nice one Ben, really nice to see the old girl back on the road. Brings back memories for me, back in the 80's i had an 827Si, it was a lovely car to drive. And i agree, i miss the days when car manufacturers competed to see who could make their cars the most comfortable, and we were talking everyday family cars - not really high end models.
Glad you got that classic Rover back)))
Another great video Ben and another classic saved for the road! :). I love the 2nd gen 800! I was lucky enough to be able to waft around in a (then) 5 year old 1997P 825 KV6 Sterling when I was 22 as it was cheaper to insure than my 1995 Vauxhall Vectra B 1.8GLS! I still say that that was one of the finest sounding V6s! These T-16 engines are good solid lumps - seen use in the R8 200/400s and the 600s as well as these. Best known in 197bhp turbo form in the R8 Tomcat coupes. Other than a wee oil seep from the block it's normally solid (though the turbo ones have been known to blow the big ends on occasion). The temp gauge issue may be a faulty thermostat - I encountered a similar issue with a Mondeo 3 where the gauge would vary depending on the undulation of the road and I was worried about HGF trouble or that and it was just one of the thermostats had failed.
What a great car! Dad had the same model and used to let me drive now and again, great memories and loved watching you bring the old girl back to life. Well done, can’t wait for the next!!!
One of your best videos Ben loved the face when you were polishing the handbrake 🤣🤣🤣 top job pal👌
Best car yet! Who is singing the song during the road trip, please ? I really love her voice.
Very good 800 that, it's no rust bucket 😊
Another great vid. Nice to see a youtuber actually put the effort into the restoration/running effort of a classic, although i think the welding leaves a bit to be desired! Another plus is the fact that you are not one of those that gets a free/cheap classic and changes a battery and/or gives a wash and suddenly they think car is now worth 10k! Hopefully she will go to a good home, to someone that will cherish her.
I owned a 827 Vitesse many years ago. I was given a grey leatherette interior from a Sterling & to fit the rear seat back in we welded a bar across the rear & attached the it with pipe clamps. Obviously it didn't fold down, but looked great. Would solve your mouldy rear seat problem, & would match the rest of your interior. Love the channel.
Good Afternoon Ben, Hope are alright. I thoroughly and most Emotionally Enjoyed this Revival of a Tasty Classic Rover 820, not a Sterling. I was so Glad you removed those Fake Decals. She looked so much better. You would Not believe this Classic Rover 820 1.6 is the Incredible 31 years old. This is what your Channel Tasty Classics is all about. Ben, this was another superb resurrection video, really loved it. I think the Rover 800 series was a great car, underrated at the time. Great job in getting another great car back on the road. I can't believe how well it started after being stood for over 8 years with stale fuel in the tank. Yes I was one of those people who was cringing at doing a long and spirited drive with an old timing belt........☺ Anyway, really looking forward to the next video, hopefully it will be the Saab.

I love these long videos, but this one seemed almost too easy! Great job getting another British oldie back on the road.
Loved these cars, I had 827 Vitesse fastback, British racing green on a G plate, great car
WOW that was brilliant Ben great video, your personality is so comical, roll on the next one
Great car and awesome video. Thank you for sharing this experience. I honestly don’t know what it is about our love for Rovers, I wonder if it’s because we all love an underdog and let’s face it, Rovers was the underdog of the British motor industry. I have a 2004 1.4 Rover 25 which was a hand me down from my late grandparents. I hated it at first, I was embarrassed to drive it, but as time went on and I got a few more miles out of it and started working on it, I have become quite attached to it. Rover did make some great cars that do stand the rest of time (with a bit of love and care)
Wonderful. Loved every minute of it.
Great video as always ben love the rover 820i also love the sunbeam is it in the backround looks very nice never seen one before can't wait for that video to, keep up the madness and saving them classics 🚘👨🏭👍

Fantastic video I just stumbled across your channel wow sat and watched the hole video loved it looking forward to watching more
Great video Ben, I am myself a Rover fan at heart, and seeing this really took me back to my youth of my Dad having Rover company cars, especially remember the 200 Gti's and coupe's...very underrated cars. Keep the videos coming, loving the channel and content. The mould thing on Rovers/Austin's why is that??? just for info the T series was 136 the M series was 140 😁
Love love this guy! This video was awesome.
🎉I'm amazed you say how lively it was , my 820se had the same engine as yours but the full boot not the hatch. It didn't have a speedo, it was fitted with a calendar........it was so slow . It finally did what all those engines did and developed a sticky valve and went lumpy so I got rid . But I have to say it was a very comfy car and ride. Later i had a 623gsi in firenze red , cream leather auto ......wow what a motor that was beautiful to drive till i finally swapped it .
I had the honour of owning an 820 vitesse turbo and that was seriously quick. 200 ish bhp from factory, recaro seats and the same spoiler as yours which looks suspiciously like it's off a vitesse lol. great video. Thanks
Love this video on the rover, my parents had a 214 si rover 2 door on the 90s and it was a great car, please do more of the same
Great video again. I agree on the car comfort from the 90s. I’ve got a P reg Citroen ZX and the seats are like armchairs whereas my 2020 Skoda has seats like blocks of concrete. I had a ‘94 Escort as well and the seats were super comfy.

Another one who listens to Clarkson. it was the 1.8 K series that had head gasket issues , which was down to the bosses as the engineers knew about it and the top brass said "it`ll be fine no need to rectify it", Lotus rectified it when they used it in the Elises , many many cars that had head gasket problems kept it quiet because they had a bigger budget to bride the press, I worked in a garage for 17 years and we made most of our money of French and Italian cars with their constant electrical issues and all the other faults they had . If you research the top 10 cars with common head gasket issues Rover didnt even make the top 10 BMW had four places, five if you count the Mini.
Amazing best you tuber so far. So much effort
