It was, and good on Tommy, but he knows Rick will just groan and moan all the way round unless he gave him a bit of consolation. I am much preferring Rick’s review content at the moment to the on course, and it’s just an hour of watching the dude go through mental anguish.

Rick's worst, and best, shots come from within his head - he talks himself into both. Over the past 10 years or so, I can't recall ever having seen Rick hit a good shot after expressing negativity about the challenge or the odds of succeeding, or after putting pressure on himself because "I really need this one." But I have seen him hit some truly fantastic shots when he has told himself he CAN do it. Today was no different. Great course vlog with Tommy, again. Such a lovely fellow. He would be a great friend to have.

He always says the worst things almost as hes taking his back swing - like, 'come on rick, good swing' or 'need a perfect shot'. It just sets him up for disapointment and nothing to analyse after. He needs to work on a mechanical swing thought or two so he isnt only devestated after making a mistake but also has something positive to work on. Its quite frustrating to watch.

Great lesson here - don't recount or dwell on the bad shots in your external/internal dialogue. Also, don't make excuses (grass grain etc.), as doing so just tells you that your game is out of your control. Own the bad shots, smile, appreciate being there and birdie the next hole - or at least say that's what you'll do. Tommy is so calm and level headed and Rick seems to sabotage his game a bit. Once you develop a state of embarassment or despondency, your short game will become hesitant and you'll yip and/or leave your shots short (or blade them to hell). Fabulous case study here and thanks! Dave Edit: constantly being negative and putting yourself down when you're off your game also makes the round unpleasant for your playing parners, especially if they're having a blinder.

I’ve been a massive Rick Shiels fan for years, and I love this 10 shot headstart format v top pros. It’s great to hear their thought processes pre shot and awesome to get an insight into what they’re like as people. But. I just wish Rick would chill out and enjoy himself, not put too much pressure on himself and just generally be a bit more upbeat. I know he’s competitive, he wants to win etc, but the humility that many of us love him for i.e. laughing off a bad shot etc has turned a bit more into sounding a bit like a moaner recently. You’re playing Tommy Fleetwood in Dubai!!! Cheer up!!!! No one wants to hear sighs, moans, constant self criticism. Maybe there is a Rock Shiels mindset and golf psychologist series in this 😂

Lovely round to watch and thank you. Great you showed every shot and didn't do a "showreel" job. Those little chunkers (3rd shot on 4) are just waiting to pounce, even for very low markers like you, which leaves the rest of us knowing that we're all human! Tommy is, as everyone seems to say, a complete gentleman and his relaxed demeanor is something many of us could do with a bit of. Cheers and thanks from Sydney - Dave

The chipping is the most startling, but the true difference between a tour pro and a non-tour pro is the distance from the pin on putts. Even before the yips, Rick was consistently 10-30 feet further from Tommy on the greens and, over time, that just gives someone like Tommy many more birdie opportunities and no worse than par. The stats bear this out but it’s quite remarkable to watch it play out.

You're right. Poor Rick... ball didn't go where I wanted it to go! Kudos to Tommy - I think I'd be telling Rick to play his own game and stop whining! Tommy had to write a book for Rick at every hole on how to play EVERY shot! Rick, you've had a good run, now you just come across as a cry-baby. I ended up just watching Tommy as Rick got on my nerves. He is not the player he thinks he is and all that doesn't work is down to you - not the wind, not the lie, not the grass, not the line - YOU are the problem, Rick - YOU!

Oh Rick... I FEEL you. I struggled so much with chips and short pitches for a while, and was totally in my own head. I see a lot of my same struggles with you. Have you ever done an episode about sports psychology? I've gotten so much benefit from reading a few books, especially Dr Bob Rotella. I've learned to get out of my own way. 41:05 is a great example. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. You don't want to be there and verbalize that... then after fatting it, you say "I knew it". I'm now in a place where I WANT the challenge of those shots, and I WANT to show off my short game (even if it still isn't quite there). It's so hard to get out of our own way sometimes.

And I'm guessing that is grainy Bermuda? 😜 I know ALL about that here in Austin, TX. Around the greens, you are ALWAYS into the grain on that Bermuda. If it makes you feel better, I've been playing on it for 30+ years and STILL struggle with it. Have to play it a certain way... and there is a reason why putting from off the green is sometimes called the "Texas wedge" 😉

Only just watched this. Hadn’t realised how long it was - 18 holes, every shot (and nearly every thought) shown. A-MAZ-ING! Had to keep slomo-ing Tommy’s awe inspiring swing & replaying it! Rick, for pity’s sake stop being so hard on yourself. You must have half your mind on the content (which is why it’s always so good) so you’re bound to make a few mistakes in your golf. As Tommy kept saying, you drove it brilliantly and, as usual, your iron approach play was really solid. Mind you, the wobble in your short game gave us a chance to see what a quality, kind guy Tommy is. Two big-hearted guys supporting each other’s golf and having a laugh too. Fantastic viewing.
