Can Filipinos make it in Hollywood? | Breaking The Tabo | Season 1 | Episode 1 | One Down

Are Filipinos represented in Hollywood? Well, not exactly...
In our first episode of Breaking The Tabo, we explore Filipino Representation in Entertainment.
#FilipinoRepresentation #BreakingTheTabo #Hollywood
____
Breaking the Tabo: Let's talk real shit is a satirical series that explores modern Filipino experiences not included in dominant discourse or mainstream media.
"Breaking the Tabo" is a play on words for "breaking the taboo." To break the taboo is to break from something that is excluded from mention. A tabo... well, Filipinos will understand. We'll be releasing a new episode every Thursday of Filipino American History Month!

I just watched the new Netflix Series "Ratched" and one of its main character is a Filipino alongside with Sarah Paulson. Jon Jon Briones played the character of Dr. Banaga and I'm overwhelmed on how they portrayed the Filipino character and the actor. I just hope that they give more opportunities for Filipinos and its culture in Hollywood but there are some cases where Hollywood made a marketing strategy when they use or reference a Filipino culture or place just to gain more audience in the Philippines for their show because Filipinos are thirsty of global/international validation and it's called "Pinoy Baiting". I just wish they present a full Filipino character with its culture without using us for marketing strategy.

Yes! I was about to say Ratched casted a Filipino as one of the main characters and he is so good. Also, Reggie Lee is Filipino and he’s been in a lot of movies and TV series.

Indo-Malay are represented in John Wick 3. Ned Leeds is fully represented as Filipino in the Spider-Man movies. Way back in the 70's, Bruce Lee did include his friend and Martial Artist Dan Inosanto in his final movie as Pascual, the Filipino weapons master. The film Surf Ninjas with Ernie Reyes Jr as the lead role is about a fictional Asian country called Patusan which has many Filipino similarities. Another cool movie that represents South Asians is Raya the Last Dragon.

"High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" (HSMTMTS), the not-a-spinoff of the HSM films, is a step in the right direction in terms of the reclaiming the Filipino space that they missed with Vanessa Hudgens' character. The female lead is a Fil-Am, played by a Fil-Am actress, Olivia Rodrigo. (The show is better than the HSM films IMO 🤣)

Why demand Hollywood to hire more filipino director, writers, etc? When most of the content that are produced here in the country are shit. How about improving the series and films produced in the country before demanding more representation in western media. Take South Korea for example, they have been creating well produced series and films that it got recognized by Hollywood. Parasite won 4 Oscars in 2020. We won't need representation from Hollywood when we can represent our nation on our own. The victim mentality in this video is a bit cringey to be honest. Hollywood doesn't owe anyone representation, they could very well just make content that only represents them.

Where did we even get the idea that we need to please foreigners? The collective strength of Filipino fans can actually change entertainment industry and it is being exploited by many. Filipino Americans what on earth The shift should be pulled this way not that way We should be happy and content with our uniqueness Not conform or customize to fit american standard. and if we are gonna support, it should be the people we should rightly support. Maybe the relevance would be Lessening racism That is already fine.. Besides that I'm pretty content with what I am. We are world standard regardless if America recognizes us or not Take Aldub and Manny Pacquiao and so many other Filipinos. If they don't give us the platform. Then why don't we build the platform? Idealistic as it may but it is the right way to go.

To be honest, I think the reason Filipinos living in the Philippines claim they're asian, is because that's what they have been taught in school. You live in Asia, you are asian. So it's more of geography and what they are taught their whole lives, than what you look like or how your culture is, like with what the USA focuses on.

You know what’s actually racist is claiming all “Filipinos” are Asian or that Filipino is a ethnic group. Just because the lady narrating is most likely a tagolog who is mixed with most likely Chinese like many Tagalogs that have the “ asiatic face” doesn’t mean she should paint the label Asian or all Filipinos. Filipino is a name made up by a wyte man. Tagalogs wanted to be more accepted and adopted the name. Under king Philip of Spain do you know how many tagolog girls were violated ???? Sad how people of the over 20 different ethnic groups of Luzon, visayas, and mindinaoe want to be called a Filipino after a man who sanctioned the violation of tagolog, visayan, waray ect little girls. Disgusting. The script writers for this channel should educate themselves more. Did they fail to mention the first human beings of what we call ph were Africans? Are they Asian too?

To be honest i am filipino asians peoples just like chinese , koreans , japanese. Especially chinese and koreans because they are famous in whole world because they famous in asia.I comment in facebook to promote our cultural and our good movies to other countries. But you know what filipinoes did to me they criticized on me. They said filipino movies and culture are ugly and they are filipinoes. Look what going on? The manners of youth is erased because watching kpop and koreans they are afraid to help her mom to work at the field because of the sun. If koreans and chinese are not famous in the Philippines , indonesia etc they are not famous in other countries. They choosed because of popularity of course if you are popular lots of money. Before filipinoes can go in hollywood lets start in the philippines. But the problem phililpines always supporting koreans and chinese drama. They are famous and in demand because of popularity and money. Which each comes to kpop of course they cannot sing well. Yes they are pretty but they dont have talent why they are famous because of the philippines. Because the mentality of filipinoes are short. Which each comes they sing cannot consider as standing ovation to the judges. We need to humble ourselved that is not the big deal of us. They are not famous in africa in other countries we just humble ourselved as long we are good and smiling that is our culture.
