One time, my mom was face timing my cousins in the Philippines. She handed me the phone to say hi to them and the first thing they said to me was "you're too fat". I tried to pass it off jokingly but it did get to me. Another one is with my little brother. He was big kid growing up so at parties my older cousins would always joke about his weight every time he gets food. Couple years ago I noticed he doesn't eat food during our family parties, I asked him about it and he said "it's because they used to make fun of me". Smh.

The first time I talked to my long lost sister when I opened the camera she said "anong nangyari sa mukha mo? Bakit ganyan? Para kang si ante choochoo noon anlalaki ng pimples nya antaba pa, alam mo sa ating magkakapatid ikaw lang ganyan". How do you like that? 🙄 She seems more excited to meet my pimples. Even more annoying is some pabida relative, especially an old one, suddenly gives an unsolicited half cooked advice "don't eat fatty foods you will get fatter", like wow, what a new discovery! Lol

Body shaming. Acne shaming. Work shaming. Filipino culture is all about shaming! Even when I was riding on a jeepney, I heard a middle aged woman made a remark "tabi anlaki laki ng dadahan hahahaha!" yes you heard it right. Someone who should be more well behaved and a model to the young ones about good manners said that to a stranger.

Nope! When a person says "You gain weight" that doesn't mean they are humiliating you... it can also mean a positive thing... it's just now that people get so over sensitive that they react on this things 🤣 and when someone said "you should lose weight" that doesn't also mean they want you to look beautiful it means that you don't look healthy and we all know that obesity is not healthy.

This is so true and I hate it. I used to struggle with an eating disorder and would binge eat every night until I got to my heaviest weight. And one day my mom's friend who we haven't seen for a month came to visit, and the first thing she said after seeing me was "tumaba ka" then she would constantly question my mom on why/how I got fat, I felt like crying... that is the WORST thing you could ever say to someone with an eating disorder, and it just triggers them into binging and starving themselves more. But luckily I got out of that mindset and am now binge free for who knows how long, I'm now fueling myself right and slowly losing the extra weight without restricting.

Criticizing someone and expecting them to appreciate it as a form of love is very unsympathetic. A true caring person would think first and assess the effects of his/her words before saying it out hence, I definitely agree with this video. Furthermore, “normalized” action does not equate to being ethically appropriate. Being done by the majority of the society does not mean that it is the good thing. It is so easy to be just swayed by what is common, but it is our moral responsibility to stand up for what is right. We should be aware on what words are appropriate to tell other people considering their current situation and personal circumstances. Also, criticizing other people and being judgmental are projections of your own insecurities and lack of fulfillment in life. Hence, always be mindful of your thoughts and to always show respect to anyone. “Is losing weight key to acceptance?” ,“Do I not deserve to be complimented?”, “Am I not doing enough?”, these are questions that arise when someone receives a lot of comments about her body shape or weight. He/she would question his/her self-worth because those words are hurtful in nature no matter how good the intentions may be. Imagine being forced to wear layers of clothing where each garment corresponds to a single comment. The more layers it become, the more suffocated you’ll be. This is just like how cumulative opinions affect an individual. It makes the person feel suffocated on the things he/she needs to qualify or fix. As a result, he/she would feel mentally exhausted and could even acquire psychological health problems. It is a fact that we can’t change other people’s perspective to us, but it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t do anything. If we just let them do it continuously, the cycle wouldn’t stop and most probably they would also do it to other person hence more victims of body shaming. Thus, in order to minimize the victims at the same time eliminate the toxic body shaming trait, we must have the courage to tell them the truth about body shaming and how it negatively affects a person. Instead of giving out our personal thoughts on other people about their weight or body shape, we should opt to giving out compliments. Telling them their strengths, good personality and other positive things. In this way, we do not just avoid body shaming, but we also spread good vibes and help them build their self-confidence. #BodyShamingEndsWithUs

Thank you for sharing! I am glad that your channel is open to addressing this topic. It is saddening that most people take body shaming as a joke, and it’s not a big deal to be sensitive about. Unknowingly, it affects others more than the “joke” had meant to. How it greatly impacts one’s emotional and mental health is crucial. It is unavoidable for society to take our sizes as “too thin” or “too thick”. On the brighter side, we can support loving our bodies by encouraging a positive outlook on our own, and understanding that there is an existing variation of body types. For me, as long as you are feeling healthy, proud of your shape, and kind, that’s what is “sexy”!

I still struggle with the concept of self-acceptance generally, and not just about weight. It sometimes feels like giving up on self-improvement. And if people tell me I'm fine the way I am, it feels like an insult to my ability to change/improve. But your point that we can make the chain of hurt stop, also for future generations, is well-taken. Love doesn't have to be about carving ourselves or others into a cookie-cutter shape.

In the past, it was a compliment, “Tumaba ka,” said with a loving smile, followed by a hug. Now, when over 50% of Filipinos are overweight ( easy and affordable access to fast foods in cities and towns in the Philippines) and how most Filipino Americans are overweight, and I am one of them, it’s a health issue for the Fil Am communities in the US and in the Philippines. We need to increase this awareness. My family is eating more vegetables and fruits, less meat, and drink plain water - back to my old way of eating in the Philippines.

Body shamming is an issue that is very controversial. Giving a comment about a person's body weight or size is humiliating. It is a big pressure on their end and it can make them feel bad about themselves. It can lower a persons self-esteem. Body shaming is also considered discrimination it can lead to stress especially among teenagers.

But since everyone on my dad's side came to the US I feel like they changed on this topic.

I’m not really in the overweight nor the underweight category, but I still have body image issues because I feel like there is an imbalance in my proportions and have worked hard for it despite having the average weight. And whenever someone in my relatives tell me that I gained weight, I feel like my hardwork is not enough to improve myself and thus, make me feel crappier than I already am. So my response to this is that I just don’t say anything and give them the unpleasant look that says “hey, I am not comfortable at anyone commenting about my weight” without coming across as arrogant but rather upset

best friends of mine used to call me fat... I didn't know how to react so I just kept silent. I let it be, simply because they are just comfortable in saying things like that because we are like a family, like we all got each other's back however it's affecting me when I'm in my lows. Their jokes or passive aggressive remarks kept on repeating in my head. What should I do? Should I tell them? But they might say that I'm oversensitive which they actually do whenever I try to open up about it.

i dont know what to feel rn. ganitong-ganito pamilya ko, lagi nila sinasabing mataba ako so nagstruggle ako to lose weight dumating pa sa point na hindi na talaga ako kumakain. nasanay na ako na hindi kumain like sumasakit ang tiyan sa gutom. pumayat naman ako and hoping na hindi na ulit nila ako mapupuna pero mukha ko naman ang pinansin. kesyo andami ko raw pimples haha ang sakit lang kasi sa kanila kopa naririnig yung mga ganung bagay. hindi tumigil ang pamilya ko sa ganong habit, ang lagi akong husgahan kaya kalaunan nasanay narin ako. pero masakit parin talaga no? ngayong quarantine tumaba na naman ako, ito yung dahilan kaya ako walang confidence. kung sino pa yung taong malapit sayo siya pa talaga yung nagagawa kang saktan ng sobra. nagpapasalamat nalang ako dahil nagagawa kong pigilan madepress.

To address question about body shaming being a toxic trait amongst the Filipino community or if other cultures do it too, unfortunately….other cultures do it too and just as bad if not worse. Case in point…the Caribbean community. Where do I start…there’s not one name my Dad hasn’t called me over the years to insult my weight. In front of family, my friends, my parent’s friends, strangers….no occasion was off limits. One time at a dinner party my parents had at our house, one of their friends was asking me why I didn’t have a bf yet as I was 19 at the time, in university and, according to her, very pretty. My Dad, overhearing our convo, pipes up and says, “Who told u she wants a bf? U think any man in his right mind would want her looking like that?!?!??” I’ll never forget the deafening silence that fell across the room of 15 guests only to be broken by my father’s incessant chuckling. Immediately their friends began to scold my Dad for what he said and though I appreciated their efforts my embarrassment was palpable. I left the room under the rouse of getting my mother a serving spoon and spent the remainder of the evening by myself in the kitchen watching tv. And though I don’t agree with embarrassing, shaming or hurting someone’s feelings, I do feel that obesity is a problem in North America that has rapidly gotten out of control due to society constantly praising obese individuals and criticizing people who try to bring awareness to the issue and myriad of health problems obesity causes not to mention the billions of dollars it costs the government and insurance companies each year to care for these individuals. Something definitely needs to be done to address this problem but what exactly it is/they are that needs to be done and how to do it/them in the least offensive way possible is a slippery slope.

ooof, the toxicity is still very much there. The older generation are so outdated and refuse to change even to their detriment, the younger generation tend to be too much of a strawberry at times who need to toughen up as well. A good balance is needed. Funny how the 'ikaw din, taba taba mo na' reply was actually in my head the entire time. And I would still say it back, I'm petty like that.

Sometimes it becomes bullying because they do the shaming as a group.. and you cannot throw the question back at them because then they will say that you are disrespectful.. shaming applies to the person only.. not to the person/s who are shaming the fat one..

I'm really one of those who experienced body shaming. Every time people saw me they always say "Ang payat payat mo, parang hindi kana kumakain". That makes me shyer and lack of confidence because of my shape. This kind of culture must stop. Because every word that comes out of our mouths can ruin or benefit one persons life. It depends on what you say.

I can’t stan this kind of toxicity,a lot of filipino have a high standards even if its about educational background and body. Here in Philippines if you’re fat they keep saying “ang taba mo!buntis kaba?” And also if you’re thin “ang payat mo,may sakit kaba” that’s are some examples of their lines everytime they’re trying to shame the body of other people.Living in this toxic environment is not easy for me they keep mocking about the appearance of others while they don’t even know what is the reason why that person is fat or thin. If you’re plus size here in Philippines you don’t have the rights to wear croptops, shorts and swimsuit they keep saying “you’re too fat to wear that kind of clothes”. Shout out to those Filipino Citizens that keep shamming other people. Can you please wake up!! It’s already 2022.. Being plus size and thin size is normal, you don’t need to listen to those people dragging you down! No matter how your body type is speak yourself!!

Found your videos everywhere on my recommend page while my dad recently name-calling me "Lechon" and it not funny because he didn't know what does 'bodyshame' is and for a while he kept judging me and my brother's looks. If i was older than my father, i could just bodyshame him although he does that to me. Speaking of my looks and my body shape, All he wanted was just attention and he thought that it was funny and it's NOT. As an filipino, it's not normal.

That's True, There's many Filipino Experiencing the body shaming that they can interfere with self image and make feel extremely self conscious. It can cause depression, eating disorders, reduced self-esteem, and an increased risk of various other mental and physical problems. And Yes, I am one of those who experienced it but somehow I guess I can handle my mental health not to listening to them. filipino culture is somewhat quite toxicity. Sometimes the joke is not funny for other people and they take it seriously.
