Can Fasting & Calorie Restriction Help You Live Longer? | Dr Matt Kaeberlein | The Proof Clips EP249

The topic of caloric restriction and fasting and their potential to extend lifespan has been a subject of much discussion in the field of nutrition. Animal studies on mice and other animals have provided some insights into the effects of caloric restriction on longevity.
However, biologist Dr Matt Kaeberlein points out, for example, that the effects of caloric restriction can vary depending on the genetic background of the animal. This suggests that the results of laboratory studies on caloric restriction may not necessarily translate to humans.
In addition to caloric restriction, fasting is also a topic of interest when it comes to longevity. Can prolonged fasting help you fight ageing?
Here's Dr Kaeberlein for more of what data there is if you want to understand the nuances of these dietary approaches and their potential impact on ageing.

The FIRST person who's mentioned psychological issues with caloric restrictions. Finally!!!! Eating disorders and disordered eating is very prevalent, and no one acknowledges it. Thank you!!!

If restricting caloric intake by 20% (that is, 20% lower than ad libitum), this will be a caloric deficit until the body weight is reduced to a stable maintenance stage. Then it is caloric maintenance, at a stable, lower body weight. The reason the weight loss stops, is that the basal metabolic rate (BMR) has lowered. The metabolism has slowed, and this slowdown of the metabolic rate is the mechanism by which lifespan is extended. Correct me if any part of this is inaccurate.

Each species has a maximum lifespan. When you talk about a 10% or 20% lifespan extension, why don't you compare things to the known maximum lifespan of the species instead of the control group? You say that caloric restriction doesn't work in some strains, you need to tell us the maximum lifespan of that strain and how it compares to the maximum lifespan of the species. Otherwise you're not really telling us anything useful.

The wish you would have asked if he would do fasting if he were young again and his opinion on training while fasting.

So the guy says "lose as little muscle as you can" and "calorie restrict". In general if you calorie restrict over long periods you are going to lose muscle after burning away excess fat. The body is not going to reduce the size of you organs if you calorie restrict. Muscles costs a lot of energy to maintain while fat depots, I guess, do not. Calorie restricting over extended time periods seems seems almost synonomous with carrying around as little muscle tissue as possible. You should have followed up on that.
