I would prefer to have it without onion. Tomatoes would make it watery. The recipe works better if it is dry

Channa dal should be cooked in the pressure cooker before frying in the masalas. The look itself shows that the channa dal is uncooked. Thanks

You are thinking of toor dal or moong dal. Chana dal does not need pressure cooker
