One cool way to do linear crafting is in vintage story, you still do linear crafting but it's completely tactile, you chip away at flint to make tools, you make clay were by forming it, you smith tools by hammering ingots into shape

You might be interested in taking a look at the Atelier games, they are a whole series entirely centered around what you're calling non-linear crafting. Sophie 2 in particular features the most involved crafting system I've seen ever and uses it to great effect throughout the game

The thing with non-linear crafting is it's a lot more complex for everyone, like you said the dev need to add a whole system and art, and also no one want to spend 40% of their gameplay just be crafting and the worse part about this is they need resources if you are trying to craft a sword for examples now you need a handle and a blade so now you need to get a blade and a sword, but what if you had 2 handles? That need to be solved first. BTW, if you think about it all those FPS game with gun attachment are a type of non-linear crafting

This makes sense, especially for games with more focus on the moment to moment survival. I like "survival" games with an automation and logistics angle (MC with tech mods, Factorio, Satisfactory, that kind of stuff). There non-linear crafting doesn't really make sense because you want to get away from hand crafting as soon as possible. The crafting needs to be simple and consistent because layers of complex systems build on top of it.

@@rustkitty very true, it helps that part of the fun of automation also comes from optimizing placement of individual parts and such, so in that way linear crafting meshes better with a system like that

1:05 because most people don't want to focus on the crafting. They want to use the items.

As someone who is working on learning programming so I can start making my own games, this video is very helpful! It explains the pros and cons of both types of crafting mechanics really well, and it's given me a bit to think about (considering my game was planning to use some basic crafting mechanics)

Well... we do kinda... look at township tale, last time I played it had linear crafting but the systems were very tactile if you could call it that, let it be know I haven't played it in like 2 years tho so it's likely to have changed substantially

I really enjoy when a game can make crafting systems fun, and I appreciate getting to hear someone else's thoughts on it. The hook at the start really got me interested, which isn't something I usually see from a small creator, so I thought I'd give some advice/constructive criticism. All good video essays will follow a flow/rhythm, and a pace. The rhythm is made up of the talking points, and the flow between them, and the pace is how fast the rhythm is. If pace breaks, the video begins to drag, and if rhythm breaks, the video feels tangential. What makes a good video into a great video is how snappy it is, attention spans are dwindling these days and you gotta keep people watching. The intro is very long, and 100% dead air, I feel like the entire first 17 seconds of the video could be scrapped. The hook, as great as it was, could've been shaved down to be much quicker. You use a lot of filler words/phrases, which tend to break pace. Examples include 1:06, 1:26, 1:28, 1:36, 1:44, and 2:40 At 1:11, you say "I'd like to-" when you could just cut straight to you doing it. That helps with both snappiness and pacing. This happens again at 2:43, you can just get straight to reasons. At 1:33, you say "I guess" which not only breaks pacing, but also sounds unscripted, which is especially bad when trying to answer a question. At 2:10, the comedic timing is off which leads to broken pacing. This happens again at 3:57 and especially 4:55 where there's a solid 5 seconds of dead air. 2:19 Completely wrecks the pacing, this entire build could've been either made in just a second of screen time, or better yet entirely cut for the sake of pacing. At 2:41 and other points in the video, you stutter, which doesn't necessarily break pace, but it is a bad habit. At 3:00, you unnecessarily explain the smelter. The point of this section is "Why tinkers is a good crafting system", which doesn't require an explanation of the smelter in this much depth. In every single applicable case: Show, don't tell. If you absolutely must, then show *and* tell. Never just tell, which you do at 3:35, 3:40, and 5:50 4:10 is a great example of why being snappy is important, because the pacing is perfectly fine, but the script really drags. 4:26 - Broken pacing. Can't really make a lesson about this one, it's just an example of bad pacing. At 4:35, you use "or" way too many times, it should either be a list or only 2 examples. I already mentioned 4:55, but that dead air warrants a second mention, pacing gets wiped out by dead air. At 5:26, it's always a good idea to make a video anyone can watch. A script change could make it so even if you've never played Terraria, you wont click off mid-video. Also just a small nitpick, but every system that's not procedural is technically linear, so a more accurate name would be Confined vs Free crafting. I'll be tuned in to anything you make in the future, and I'm hoping for your success.

Nothing but respect to Tinker’s Construct devs, but I think a system like that is just fundamentally not for Minecraft. The game is founded upon having simple items and straightforward mechanics, but allowing you to combine them in unique ways. And I think Enchantments are a better way of approaching this idea, even if they’re very flawed rn.

100% agree, that's part of the reason I said that I wanted an original project to have a system like Tinkers, I'd like to have bring up how a mod like Tinkers doesn't mesh 100% well with Minecraft. Again if a game were to have rpg mechanics and some sorta charecter building, then it stands to reason (I think) that a tinkers-esque tool crafting system would fit much better and fully come into its own as a gameplay feature
