I'm a huge fan of Il Divo. It broke my heart when he passed away. The group are so very talented their voices just meld into beautiful music. The loss of Carlos is a staggering blow to the rest of them, and the fans. Thanks for bringing this to a wider audience Fil. I have been a fan since their first album and the music is just so beautiful and calming.

Fil, thank you for this very informative and gracious review of Il Divo. As you said, what a great bunch of singers. I am sad that Carlos passed away so young-it leaves a gap that will never be the same. Thanks for all you do, Fil, for bringing a wide variety of music to our attention.

I've been listening to them since they were formed. My favorite piece by them has to be "O Holy Night" from their concert in the ruins in Spain. When Carlos really let go with the line "Christ is the Lord..." it always gives me chills. RIP Carlos.

Thank you for delving into Il Divo/Carlos! Great to hear notes/ranges of the boys but easier to analyze Carlos voice with a solo song, of which there are many! "Confrontation" and "If I Can't Love Her" maybe? Maybe do just Carlos next. Il Divo and Carlos need more attention and praise! This is so great! Thanks Pegusus

So many reaction videos are thin to almost non-existent on the technical analysis and the historical/contextual aspect of a performance and artist. I always leave Fil’s videos with knowing more, appreciating more, and feeling more rather than being annoyed at the supposed “coach” wasting my time.

Carlos uses the technique of the old opera singers. No sing in the mask,no strain in the voice. He uses worderful legato,a very open throat in every range he sings, high or low you will hear the openess in his throat. One of the techears of Carlos are Alfredo Kraus and Montserrat Caballé. RIP to the best baritone I have ever heard who could sing A4s like nothing who had a fantastic grace in singing. Such a huge lost.

You are so kind as you analyze and realize we are so subjective in our taste for music. I used to love Bon Jovi and it's only his political views that made me say snarky things. But you are so professional and hold back on any feelings. You're a class act. And I love opera and classical music as much as James Brown and the Beatles, Beach Boys and Dean Martin. Yet again, another fine video! For once I really have nothing to add so I will simply repeat a suggestion for an analysis. Cathy Berberian providing the vocal on Berio's "Sequenza III" for female voice. It is here on KZread. As a commercial testament to how far outside of the mainstream the recording is, I recall buying my vinyl copy for 30 cents back in the 70's. Btw, re: the performance under analysis today. It was the sound of the audience in the background that reminded me that at the time many "classic" operas were composed, the art form was not "high brow," it was raucous popular entertainment. No top hats and tails in the evening but the general populace having fun at, say, an afternoon matinée. The same is true of the plays of Shakespeare, which explains why his works are riddled with incredibly rude humour (once you understand the language).

It was interesting to see what a classical voice looks like on the pitch graph. Not really familiar with Il Divo, but I did listen to Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman in the 90s. And the Three Tenors, of course. I guess one could consider Mario Lanza as one of the first crossover artists. Besides being nice to listen to, classical crossover can also work as a bridge to opera, at least that's what happened to me.

Not my style, but they were absolutely incredible, and what a shame about Carlos Marín....damn covid. Too young. I really love baritones, much more than tenors. Oh, and I believe the singer you say is French might actually Belgian or Swiss-French, but I might be wrong. I read that the group consisted of 3 tenors and 1 baritone. Outstanding analysis!

Well, pop music capitalizes on the most common sentiments of all sentient life. It makes classical music more accessible to the mean man in contradiction to the wishes of posh folk. I too want to laugh, cry, smile, feel indignant, awed and amazed when I watch, hear and feel a talent perform. In other words, I don’t have to be afraid to try buying classical music. Be patient. Wait for it. I will get the endorphin hit. I am grateful to the producers, composers, conductors and artists to bring beauty in any medium. I am grateful for artists like Mario Lanza, Maria Callas, Pavarotti, and even Enigma back in 1990 I think. They combined the themes of holiness with sensuality. I thought they were original but I realized they were not aboriginal in the sense of being the first in creativity. Such artists allowed me to enjoy the privilege of high art such as Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. The original Tom and Jerry cartoons are one example of so many children entertainments that brought European music to me the son of a Haitian household. Even John Williams had the goal to bring classical music the mainstream when he composed for George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg. The first Tim Burton Batman movie had two soundtracks sold to the public. People kept thinking that Prince was the main artist but Danny Elfman was the primary composer and conductor. His themes confirmed that the story was a modern opera. My favorite combination of classical and pop music is James Brown and Pavarotti singing THIS IS A MAN’s WORLD. That was classy. Thanks for the music man.

Take a look at the videos and hope you can share your thoughts. Cheers!

This is not classical singing though. It's classically trained singers singing popular music. Ps personally I feel in this rendition, the song itself lost it's emotional content. It became more of a vehicle for vocal prowess.
