Purchased a new sportsman 850 premium 2 months ago and just did the 1st oil change. Took 10 minutes. So far I love this machine and this video makes me glad I went with a sportsman. I know you have had them because I'm a subscriber and have watched your previous videos. Great videos! I enjoyed watching them!

I do my own and the only plastic you need to take off to gain access to the filter is the one under the wheel arch looks like your doing it the hard way

Ken in know this, but Can Am wants you to change the transmission fluid at 25 hours and that requires removal of the panels and foot well. I really like the videos removing the inner fender to change the oil filter...i agree that is much easier for just changing the crank case oil. Stay healthy.

I feel your pain my 2019 outlander 650 I just did all the same things to it it's kind of a pain in the ass working on, Can-Ams, but it's worth it the machines are so awesome. I come from a grizzly background.. thanks for the videos they're very helpful I appreciate it.

This was a great video! My friend and I just did the oil change in his outlander 570 today and to say it was a PITA is an understatement! There was plenty of profanity involved during plastic removal! I do not own one of these machines. They seem very solid, well put together and of high quality. However, if routine maintenance is this difficult, it's a deal killer for me.

The reliability of can-am outlander is second to none, high maintenance but worth it in the long run, my cousin and older brother had Polaris and they didn’t last one summer season, I put 35,000 kilometres on my outlander before I sold it, quads are like the family car in the north

These are the best quads the technology that goes into the motor and the chassis and the ride is number 1, I put 35.000 kilometres On mine, but I had to do the maintenance on it, it’s worth it, like he said the torque is well worth putting up with maintenance, if you have a dealer near by get them to teach you how to do the maintenance the first time, you won’t regret it

I was able to change all fluid and the oil filter with only removing the side plastic and front wheel well plastic. You need to use a pump or hose to fill the transmission fluid without taking off extra plastics, but saves so much time. An oil and filter change really only takes about 30 minutes and the diff fluids are the same since nothing needs to be removed to access. Especially on the 570, which is what I work on.

The "gunk" on the drain plug is metal shavings from the transmission gears, sticking to the built-in magnet.

Nice video, Pete! "Design for service" is a big concern for guys that like to do their own maintenance. I love my BRP Ski-Doo's, but tasks that you think would be simple turn out to be very difficult. I could change 2 spark plugs on my 2005 Ski-Doo Renegade 800 P-tek in less than 15 minutes. On my 2012 Ski-Doo Renegade 800 e-tec, that same job takes about 3 hours. These machines have become so compact - every inch is used and you can't easily get your hands and tools in the proper position. And if you drop a nut, bolt or socket, you'll spend 30 minutes finding and retrieving it. My best friend is an extendable magnet when I'm working on my sleds. These machines are great fun though!

I agree with you 100%. The first time i changed the oil on my Outlander 1 up i did the same thing searching for dropped parts in the frame...even tools. My best friend was a magnet on a stick...agreed, that just slows down the job. It's the price you pay for a great machine and engine....that's what i tell myself. Thank you excellent comment.

Service/Repairs are never as easy as they should be... If they were, everyone could do it... Lol.. Great tutorial... 👍👍👍

spot on...spot on. I've never seen a complete oil change video for an Outlander...the closest was a guy called Rob Farol i think and he cut up his foot well. Thanks Doc keep them coming. stay safe.

I just did service on my 850 Outlander. Only panel I took off was the inside right fender to change the filter. Wasn’t that bad. I also did all the grease fittings except the 2 on the drive shaft. Couldn’t get to them . I have a full metal under carriage protection plates. Didn’t even try and do the spark plugs because the front one is impossible! Can Am engineers did not design a machine that is friendly to do it yourself owners. Great ATV’s but I won’t buy another one just for the maintenance issues.

Great video. Thanks for all the tips on screw locations, because I have broke panels in the past with wrestling hidden screws. Also Beautiful garage, one tip I have is before you do the oil changes, next time I recommend putting down a cheap HF tarp and moving blanket(absorbs the spillage) on top of that under the machine before you start. Makes for a nice clean floor and something more comfortable then hard cold concrete to work on, as we are only getting older. Lol

You can change the oil filter without pulling the side panel. 1/4in ratchet with 6” Extention. T20 is the size of the Torx bit you need.

Others have said the same. Ugh the first time I filmed this I didn't use the video it turned into a wrestling match with panels and fenders during a hot summer night. You're probably better at this service than I. Take care Be safe

Spot on it's how I do it, in the past I did used to pull half the shit off but it turned a simple or what should be a simple job into a major day and a total fucking nightmare they are shit to work on.

I recommend not changing your oil while the machine is warm. It's best practice with all engines to wait until the oil is cooled down to change it. It's 100% the reason you're having it splash around everywhere and can actually be very dangerous since oil reacts different when hot and will splash everywhere and potentially melt or catch on fire. Always drain oil cold. You can start the machine and run it to move it or whatever, but do not let the engine heat up.

Also, you can access the oil filter by removing only the side plastic and front wheel well and do not need to remove the footwell. Can save you so much time. You can still access the transmission plugs, but will need a pump or hose to fill it. I find that much faster and better than removing all of the plastics every maintenance.

Engineers don’t service anything they design and the thought doesn’t even cross their mind. If it does it’s under optimal conditions . The main concerns of the companies are horse power and gadgets to beat the competition .

Did my first service today and with a fleet head 1/4 drive ratchet and a shallow socket I got to the filter bolts without pulling any plastics but the one right on the side of the engine

Its splattering out of the drain due to the fill plug still being in. The crank case is gulping air while it drains slightly and it sloshes all over when it drains. If you let it breath with the fill plug out itll drain much better

I have a 2021 Outlander Max 1000 Limited and and a 2021 Outlander Max 650 XT and you don’t have to do any of that lol. You just remove 1 panel in the wheel well to do the oil and then particularly remove the skid plate to do the trans. Maybe the Max is different cause it’s a little longer but damn

Which ATV have the easier maintenance (oil change and air filters...) ? I have a 570max xt, with snow plow, and to get to the oil filter is a pain! Why can't the oil filter be placed under a removable panel or seat?

All the Polaris ATV's and SXS's are easier to service than Can Am ATV's and SXS's. I've been there buddy those Can Ams are brutal hours to do crankcase and tranny fluid. Polaris is about an hour to change crankcase oil. Thank you for watching

No I don't...that may be as simple as WD40 at the exposed cable ends...but the throttle on my machines is fly by wire i have not cables. If yours is the same i guess we solved that issue. Stay safe.

There wasn't a problem with the skid plate...it's everything that has to be removed to get at drains and fillers. Be safe

David I have a motorcycle jack which lift very high...higher than a car jack. I probably lift the front and rear separate then installed stands. I hope this helps.

I have a 2017, and the oil filter cover is almost completely exposed. I have half a thought to cut out the foot well. @ more inches and you wouldn't have to remove any plastic at all....AHHHHH

I agree with I wouldn’t want to live on the difference. Limited are in demand and production is slow. Who would’ve thought buying a $25k machine would be hard? What an industry I hope you find your machine. Btw the loaded Polaris North Star comes with big tires. Stay safe!🙂

I have a 2021 650 XT , I cannot find the crank case drain plug to save my life. My manual is useless and good old Google is full of KZread segments like this one but NON of them show you clearly enough the drain plug location, wonder if anyone maybe has a detailed scetch that they would be willing to send to me through FB messenger, would appreciate that very much. Great segment👍

My 2020 XMR 1000 I Drop it off at the dealership. Best $150 spent. I go enjoy my day and pick it up later that afternoon.

I just changed the oil in my 2011 and it was very easy. I only had to remove the panel between the front right wheel panel and remove the bolts between the front right fender and foot rest panel so i could move it while working. I have a plow frame under mine so the oil plug access is super easy. I only fought the heat from the engine because i warmed it up too much. The only real beef i have with mine is the air filter access is a pita.

I traded the single which was older than the max...i prefer the longer wheel base for hills and ride. The one up is definately quicker but i ride slow. Stay healthy thank you.

I Love the longer wheelbase so much so that I added 4" to wheelbase of my Sportsman XP 1000 to make it the same as a 2 up model and only had to buy the rear drive shaft for a 2 up model to make it work.

Now add a aluminum skid plate from the factory and it's another thing you have to remove, they weren't even smart enough to leave you a hole to access the front diff. drain plug. Good atv just brutal to service it . I'll be looking elsewhere for my next bike. Getting up in age and I don't need this shit!

If you have to tear a machine half apart to just change the oil, it's a nightmare and a time consumer. Yamaha and Kawasaki make it easy and time efficient, with spin-on oil filters, and little or no removal of plastic.

That looks like a Nightmare . My Sportsman XP 1000 or Grizzy only takes about 2 minutes and both have a spin-on oil filter so much cleaner and that oil filter in side is for the stone age and there is no way fill it with oil like a spin-on filter so the engine starves for oil till it fills up the oil filter housing.

There’s easier ways, don’t take the hole machine apart.

You just remove the front panel in front of the filter and thats it. You can do it all right there

@@stewbuntu I can assure you I'm not a fraud. I followed the manual...not the best illustrations. I heard there are remote oil filter kits for this engine. I don't know why Can Am does not offer that on all their engines. That would end this debate. Post my video I've watched videos where the filter access is from the inner fender which works well...but does not help with the tranni oil change. All good my video just shows how I changed the oil following the instructions. I do love that Rotax engine. Stay safe.

@@maraudermitchelli Its a fruad by Can Am to scare owners from doing a 20 minute oil change via the front cover/5 snaps, and you are perpetuating the lie, as if its something difficult.

As much as I like the Can Am 650 Max XT, it’s very difficult to work on. It’s like they purposely made it that way, so most would take it in for Service. Regardless of what you want to do, it’s a pain in the ass.

Oil change is ridiculously complicated. Wish CanAm would just make a removable door in the engine cover plastics to remove the filter. The effort and time it takes to replace the oil and filter is unacceptable.

It’s their philosophy, great engine but I don’t think they will change. If the could just add some access panels on their body panels and a casting here it there…I don’t get it either. I heard the Spiders oil change has to be done by the dealer… Stay healthy 🙂

Hey I don’t think I would like the oil filter cartridge I would like to see them put a regular oil filter on there that looks like abortion to take a part but good job after I did the work I would give it a pressure wash down but other than that awesome job all my stuff is very clean that’s just the way I am
