Telling a Canadian to cheer for another Canadian team is like telling a london based Premier League team to cheer for another London team. "It sucks that Chelsea is eliminated this year. But I really hope Arsenal wins it for London~" said no Soccer fan ever.

Pretty much, except I have no idea what's this soccer thing you speak of. Even when a London based team is in the Champions League playoffs, if you're a fan of another London club you just can't cheer for them, infact you would be cheering for the other team even if they were French or German.

Nah, disagree. I’d happily cheer for any Canadian team that is the last in the running, because I’d rather see a Canadian team win. I despise the Leafs but I’d still cheer for them in the final if some how they ever made it. The other Canadian teams I like more than Toronto so it would be the same.

@@EnerGeezerSquirrel As a Leafs fan, I would hope the Yankees win the next 10 Stanley cups if it means Edmonton, Montreal, or Ottawa get 0. I don't care that they play a different sport. Also at the end of the day, there are so many Canadians littered throughout all of the the teams in the NHL. Vegas last year had 15 Canadians on their roster. So the cup still "comes home" when those players get their day with the cup.

Yup, I remember as a young Canucks fan in 2004, 06 and 07 everyone hopping on the Canada’s team bandwagon when we got bounced. And absolutely no one returning the favour when it was the Canucks turn in 2011. Since then the only Canadian team I want to see win it is my own. When Vancouver has a Stanley cup banner, I will then happily root for other Canadian teams to do the same. Imagine investing energy into rooting for your own hated rivals (Calgary and Edmonton) in the playoffs only for them to snub yours when it’s your turn. That’s why i’m a stubborn prick about “Canadas team.”

I think you hit the nail on the head. The question pops into my head, and sometimes I almost think I want another team to win from this country, but then I realize I am going to have to hear about how that Canadian team gets to hold it over all of our heads, certainly in the case of rivals. There is also just too much history. I am not an antagonistic fan. I've always just kind of rolled my eyes at the tribalism, though I know full well I have an unhealthy investment in the Oilers. It never became more apparent than moving from Edmonton to the Vancouver area in July 2010. It was brought up in my family that the Canucks were going deep and we should support them, but I then remembered how RELENTLESS the fans were to me when I said I used to watch the Oilers (I took about 2007-2011 off hockey, and as a young kid, you only need to look at the dates to understand why). Through all of those playoffs (and 2011-13), I wanted nothing more than to see the Canucks out of the playoffs as a result. I was sick of hearing about them, I was sick of seeing them fawned in my face, and the fans seemed to be a different breed than what I was used to in Edmonton/Calgary. Those years passed, and 90% of the fans seemingly disappeared... I had never seen that, and I didn't respect it, and I wanted to change that about my young young self hopping off of support after 2006. Difference was, I never blamed the Oilers, I was just young and hurt, but I loved my team. I had jumped back into watching Oilers hockey as something to do with my brother, and we stuck with it, through that whole rest of the decade of darkness, and since. I absolutely want to see those rebuild years, and that fandom of a team gone from bottom feeder to top contender actually pull through. There is investment, and that can't be built when I didn't follow and support the other 31 teams in the league the same way. Especially with my unhealthy investment. There has never been the kind of fits thrown that I have in the past 15 years in any other avenue of life. I actually distanced myself in my mid 20s because I was embarassed to my reactions to being knocked out in a play-in round, to being beaten and battered by the ducks in 2017. I approach it a lot differently now, and have faith the current club can come back from anything. I took the whole regular season off the past 2 years, and just kept tabs through highlights and recaps. I can't see loving or caring about another team. Period. Not to mention, being in a Canadian Division with Montreal fans is never something I want to relive. Volatile, at least whoever was finding their way to me. Enough "McDavid wants to play in Toronto" articles and conversations with leafs fans have me shaking my head too much, but I was hoping they pulled through this year. That's too much torture for anybody year to year, I am truly sorry, folks. Ironically, Calgary, I have enough family who likes them, I don't hate the team. I hated human beings on the team like Tkachuk. Now that menace is gone... so no reason to hate for me. The endless comments about that team eating edmonton alive in the second round a few years back was satisfying to see turned on it's head, I will admit. Ottawa, Winnipeg, no problems here.

As a diehard Canucks fan, I would cheer on any Canadian team left in the playoffs (except the Oilers, gotta draw the line somewhere). I think its great for the game to prosper in the US and for American teams to win, but when hockey is so culturally prevalent in Canada, I'd like for there to be a cup win up north at least every 5-10 years. I'm always happy for Canadian players winning, but it's the fanbases that have been starved of success and deserve to see their team win. Honestly, it hurts to see American franchises winning constantly when a lot of their markets don't have the widespread love of the game that Canadian fanbases do. Not to say that American fanbases lack passion or anything like that, but I imagine that in general, the percentage of a given city's population that are hockey fans is significantly lower south of the border than in Canada. I don't think Canadian fans should feel pressure to cheer on other Canadian teams though, that decision should be their own entirely.

My brother and I have a running joke about how Gary Bettman has childish fits when any Canadian team gets into the playoffs. I don't get the rallying around a Canadian team by Canadians. Most Canadian teams are rivals during the season. Everyone outside Ontario hates the Leafs. Here in the "Canada of the States", we don't cheer for other Minnesota NCAA teams in the NCAA tournament when the Minnesota school we cheer for is eliminated (we have 6 teams in the state). Screw that, they're all rivals. I also don't get the flex of "we win the Cup every year!" by Canadian NHL fans. I don't care what nationalities make up my favorite NHL team, and I wouldn't flex if American players won the Cup on a Canadian team. PS listen up to what Shannon is saying about Canadians gatekeeping the sport, blaming Bettman for no Cups, complaining about refs, etc. He's a proud Canadian but doesn't let that cloud who he cheers for or who deserves to win. He's one of the most grounded sports fans out there.

"Most Canadian teams are rivals during the season" not really though. Calgary-Edmonton and everyone vs the leafs are the only real rivalries left in Canada. As for why Canadians might feel more solidarity in Hockey than Americans, you have to remember it's our national sport unlike the US. There is gatekeeping and that's a shitty thing but it's still an aspect of our culture so winning any event is a reason to celebrate. In the US Hockey is not really a national thing so hockey communities wouldn't really have any reason to cheer for each other but it's a bit different in Canada. That's my take as a Canadian anyways.

@@darrenfleming7901 Yeah I hate that answer. "There's gatekeeping but..." you then go on to gatekeep. Part of gatekeeping is reminding every chance you get how much Canadians love hockey and how "it's just not as important to Americans." It's just insulting and frankly it's built out of ignorance. It gets tiring hearing that every single time an American just wants to talk about hockey seriously. It's a passive way to keep American fans in their place. The hockey fans in Las Vegas and Dallas like hockey no less than you do. They're obsessed. They're passionate. They're loud. They may not have 100 years of history but they love the sport too. That's kinda the point Shanmon is making. He travels to Las Vegas and Orange County a lot and always says it feels no different than in Canada when he's interacting with those hockey communities. Plus it's impossible to have all 25 Americans fanbases cheer for each other because we have 350 million people. You have the same amount of people as California. If California was its own country, you could probably convince an Oakland Athletics fan to cheer for the Padres in the World Series out of some underdog identity thing.

@@arcadeshift5071 you're free to have your own opinion but I never said Americans don't care as much about Hockey, I said it's the national sport of Canada and not the national sport of the US so there is more national solidarity around Hockey in Canada and US hockey communities are more city based or region based rather than a national solidarity. I'm sure plenty of Americans such as yourself care just as much about Hockey as people in Canada, but Hockey was as big a part of US culture as it is in Canada then it would be your national sport which it isn't, therefore the national cultural aspect is undeniably different even if many Americans love Hockey and are very good at it. This isn't trying to belittle American Hockey fans in any way I'm just trying to explain to you why there might be more national solidarity and you seem pretty defensive about it. I don't think it's gatekeeping to enjoy watching my country win tournaments at our national sport any more than it would be gatekeeping to cheer for one team based in one city and enjoy watching them win. I don't think it puts American fans in their place when we win and I don't think that it means Canada is better at Hockey or that we deserve to win, it's just partisanship, and what's the point of a nation if not to show solidarity? That's just how I see it anyways. Also, your argument about Canada's population and cheering for other Canadian teams is actually what's ignorant and insulting, as if there weren't as much contrast between Canadian provinces than there is between American states which shows how little you know about Canada obviously. Like I said there's just more national solidarity around Hockey in Canada which is why Americans don't rally around other American teams. I you think that's gatekeeping then I can't change your mind.

  • @SinisterBlackheart

    @SinisterBlackheart

@@arcadeshift5071 That's not gatekeeping. You're both mistaken. Statistically, it's harder for a Canadian team to win the cup. 7 team out of 32 teams makes it a little under 25% chance for a Canadian team to win. America loves their Football/baseball but only teams in the states play each other. Minus Toronto blue jays in the MLB, it's highly unlikely the world series will be won here and we don't have a super bowl. but if Canada did have a bunch of the cities joining those leagues and winning championships, you bet your ass, many states would be rooting on whatever team is left in their playoffs to go against a Canadian team. So of course you wouldn't understand why rival fans would join in on cheering for whatever Canadian team to win the cup. Obviously after 30 years of the cup not being in "Canada," People here are going to be fine if one of the Canadian teams wins and bring the cup back here. Prior to 30 years ago, the Stanley cup was won by a Canadian team many times but up until 1980's many new teams were established in the NHL and it did make it more of a challenge for the cup to stay in Canada. And hey, % wise, Canadians are by far more passionate for hockey than Americans. Americans are more passionate about Football and Baseball.

The Nordiques were always my “eastern team” and when they moved it just became Ottawa. Funny thing about me being an Oilers fan is that I don’t live nor ever have lived in Alberta. I’m a born and raised Saskatchewan farmer. There are a lot of Oilers fans in Saskatchewan, especially in the western half of the province. Even in the southwest it’s mostly Oilers fans. There are very few Flames fans and most non-Oilers fans are Original 6 fans. I think the dynasty years had a lot to do with Saskatchewanians usually being Oilers fans and it’s about as local of an NHL team well ever have anyway.

It’s the undercurrent of disdain for Americans that unifies many up north. Lovely.

We all hate each other. Despite Sportsnet and now Boston Pizza telling us to cheer for other Canadian teams it will never happen. Surprising that these old companies do not understand this.

I would love to see an all Canadian Stanley Cup matchup. Edmonton v Toronto, or Vancouver v Toronto. I know it's a long shot, but it would be nice!

I'm not even Canadian and I disapprove this message. That said, I'd like to see McJesus hoist the cup but I don't think the Oilers are quite there yet and may never get there until he's past his prime.

How true on team make up. I support the some Canadian teams, but as you said there are Canadians on other teams, The thing is I just watch the game with out looking at were the players come from.

Interesting video. As a lifelong Wings fan, I always pulled for Toronto since we saw them every Saturday night on CBC when Wings weren’t on TV. Except when Det played Tor in playoffs. But overall, with a lot of Canadian ties in my family, I am silently rooting for the Leafs to break their 57-year drought. Should another Canadian team make the finals, I would be pulling for that team because it would be a fun story. Meanwhile, if two US teams square off, I usually favor team which never won (Vancouver) or hasn’t won in decades (like Dallas). This is a fun topic, thanks Shannon!

As an American we are absolutely loaded at Goaltender, 2 of the 3 Vezina finalists are American and Jeremy Swayman will most likely finish top 5. The next Olympics that will absolutely be the strength of the team.

Problem is especially back then when TSN allowed comments (when they shut it down the trolls all move to sportsnet) there would be 50 comments by trolls half of them with 3 different accounts. And I believe that was the start of fan bases hating not other teams per say but other fan bases and thinking those trolls were representative of real hockey fans. I had to stop reading TSN and go over to Sportsnet then the comments transferred and I switched back again. Myself and my friends (oiler fans) were cheering the Canucks on too. Even Cheered for Iggy and the Flames against Tampa.

I was born in and have lived in the U.S. my whole life and recently got into hockey. I grew up the first 18 years of my life in Indianapolis, then lived in Louisville for 2 years, then moved to and still currently reside in Salt Lake City. My mom's brothers still live in Detroit, a city I visit frequently. Despite being American and despite the fact SLC is getting an NHL team, I have been, and still will be a Vancouver Canucks fan. Why? Well, I got into hockey a couple years ago because I was looking for a new physical sport to watch since the NFL doesn't allow hard hits anymore. I chose the Canucks because even though I am American, I have been to BC and the city of Vancouver many times during my childhood. My parents took me there to go hiking and go on whale watching tour to see my favorite animal.. the orca. And because of my many visits to the city and my many fond memories of Vancouver and B.C. as a whole, I chose the Canucks as my team to root for when I became a hockey fan. And there the only team I truly want to see win the cup. My point is it that I agree with Shannon. It'd be great to see a Canadian team win the cup again, but for me, it'd be great if that team is the Canucks.
