My mother was a narcissist & she never changed. She lived to 75 yrs old & got worse, even. At the end of her life she turned into a tantrum-throwing 5-year-old. She would never see a psychologist.

My mother would never admit there was anything wrong with her. She had 4 DWIs, none of which were her fault. She also wasn't an alcoholic (according to her).

Hi Dr. G, thanks for this info. I'm wondering if you would consider doing a video on "fragile narcissists"? I think that's the term- I'm 58 yrs old and only last year recognized that my Mother is one. She has always been sickly, needy and everything is always about her, lacks the ability to self reflect and always gets defensive when I try to express my feelings. It was difficult for me to figure her out because she wasn't a DJT type of narcissist, but once I saw her as one, it made so much sense. Thanks!

Until trump came along i never heard anyone talking about narcissists. Since we all had to deal with that in a giant scale i guess we all need to understand more about them. We all have PTSD, lol

Sadly my wife is a narcissist I didn’t pick up on the signs till it was too late and yes when we first met she made me feel on top of the world I thought this was the greatest relationship anyone could ever want but it sure didn’t take long for her to tear it all down it nearly made me suicidal I suggested counseling on several accusations it only made her worse I do not know why I feel I still love her? Because she is the most heartless and unhinged person I have ever met in my entire life God please 🙏 help me

personality disorders are not genetic. they're intractable due to the degree to which the sufferer is dissociated from their emotions, but they're not genetic. because the emotional trauma is caused so early by their equally disordered parents, it can seem that the sufferer has inherited the condition as a matter of genetic replication. Not so; it's rather a matter of detached, unconsciously abusive parenting by persons who are themselves so unconsciously toxic they're capable of abusing children when they are very young, even infants.

What happens if a narcissist goes to the Dr. but she doesn't tell the truth? If she twists what really happens at home behind the door?

I dated a person for ten years who had NPD. The main theme throughout the relationship was that the entire world was beneath him intellectually. Many years later, after all his friends and family left him due to his extreme emotional and somewhat psychotic abuse, he still believed everyone was victimizing him and owed him. Eventually he started getting a following of younger dysfunctional wayward type people to worship and follow him. I think he’s incapable of changing because he could never believe that a therapist knows something he does not.

My mother is a flying monkey to her covert narcissist sister. These two have torn apart so many family relationships, last year we had Christmas without them and it was so peaceful and celebratory. No back-biting, complaining or whining; we loved it! I personally could not care less if they get treatment; they've wrecked us and I've had to do so much counseling and healing that I just don't care about them anymore. I hope they enjoy their lonely lives because it's all they've got left.

I have bpt and i would give anything to truly change and have a "normal" life... It's really difficult. Ive had years of therapy, i tried everything from exercise and food, mediation, trying again and again and its SO difficult to TRULY change. Its like changing who you are... So, if you have a narcisist you have hopes for: even of they want to, dont bet on it!

I’m looking forward to the video on genetics because I can see patterns in my family, and listening to the old timey family stories I’m starting to put these things together.

Wow! This helps me so much to understand narcissism.. My husband went to therapy because I told him so, and blamed me for every thing, and the therapists agreed.
