Camping With Household Items - No Gear

Ойын-сауық

No gear on this trip! Just grabbed a few things from around the house and made do with what I could find. No fancy tents, no fancy knives, just a regular bare-bones, mom and pop, meat and potato camping trip.

I loved this one especially! Mindful of how camping as a pass time was first popularized by the likes of elites like Ford, Edison and Firestone, and how many people in the US have never gone camping before simply because of the cost; well Steve has the best answer since public money is intended that everyone have access to such places. Now, by Steve's example they simply have to take from home whatever would work! I would think a painting clear drop cloth, or some wide, restaurant grade Seran Wrap could do the trick too. Love the idea of a beanbag for a cot at camping! Brilliant! Make it affordable so more people can enjoy the outdoors. Brilliant!

What a ridiculous rule. We have that crap in the States, too. What about the vehicles pulling these 10-years-or-younger campers? Do they have to be a recent model, too. 🙄 Is it just me, or are "the rules" changing to where they just take the fun out of everything?

@Plain Silk Tie There are gorgeous refurbished 40 and 50-year old Airstreams out there. Vintage is in. I mean, 'in' everywhere except these campgrounds. All I'm saying, the cut-off of 10 years is a bit extreme. Don't some loans on these things run 10 years? So everyone should contribute more waste to the landfill by chucking their 11+ y/o camper when the thing is still like brand new, just so they can still go camping? Sounds rational. 🙄

Thoroughly enjoyed this latest episode of Camping with Steve, but I have to take exception to your comment that tent trailers are the 'frankenstein' of RVs. My family started camping with an old Lionel tent trailer, upgraded to a brand-new model and eventually moved on to a travel trailer and then a fifth-wheel - but our heart is still in the tent trailers. They offer practical and economical accommodations for young families, keeping the kids high, dry and hunkered down during crappy weather, primarily due to the dinette and bunks. And sleeping in a three-sided screened bunk it just the best! Although buddy across the way may have taken 45 minutes to set up his camp, you can easily level and pop up a tent trailer in 20 minutes or so ... and then it is time for Step Two!! Cheers!

I disagree...I think tent trailers are an awesome compromise. After using one for years, I actually think I liked it better than our current hard shell RV trailer. I get a far better "outdoors" experience in a tent trailer than a hard shell RV, they are far cheaper to buy/own/maintenance, more easily towable (even a small V6 is good to go).... yet infinitely more comfortable than any tent. And once you get used to it, set up is as fast as any tent I have used. Also, unless you have a 30'+ RV, a tent trailer will have *far* more bunk space than a hardshell RV. You can easily sleep 3 people (with plenty of room) at each end of the tent trailer, plus whatever couch/settee sleeping. In our 18' tent trailer, we could sleep 8 people.... try that in even a 24' hard shell RV or anything but a giant cabin tent.

It always amazes me that people can take so long to set up a tent trailer. My sister has one and it takes 15 minutes for the main part and another 15 minutes to set up the annex. She loves it as it is so quick and easy and everything is inside once set up. I love your setup and even that is more luxurious than some of the camps I have had where we only slept on a hessian sack in our sleeping bags back as kids.

the shower curtain liner & beach lounge chair were hilarious. the people next to you with the tent camper probably couldnt believe their eyes. i had a tent camper for 17 years, then bought a Little Guy teardrop camper. the tent campers do take some time to set up; cranking it up, which does take a bit of muscle, pulling out the beds, swinging down the stabilizer jacks, pulling up the galley, opening up the dinette table & benches. then doing it all in reverse when it's time to pack up. with my Little Guy, i back it in & i'm done. I also have a free-standing canopy which i set up right against the Little Guy. it protects from rain, provides shade & can also provide total privacy if i want to clip on the nylon sidewalls. enjoyed your video. hope you never run out of ideas for crazy camping.

I urge everyone to do it even if just for one night. Set your car, truck or SUV up and head into the woods for a night, bring the dog or cat, make your morning coffee on the butane stove or camp fire (best coffee EVER!). Get out there before its too cold and layer up. Its also a lot more work and energy than you'd think so bring some energy bars or snacks to keep you going. I don't know how Steve finds the patience after a bunch of step 2's to makes those elaborate meals lol.

Funny related story, back when quarantine was in full swing and everything was closed I really needed to get out of the city and go camping, the only parks that were open were a few privately owned ones. I called around for an hour and finally found one about 2 hours away with a site and I paid online to reserve it. I quickly packed up and headed out, I got there and went to find my "site". It was basically the front lawn of about 4 different trailers, some guy watching me while he ate, I got right back in the SUV and got my money back, spent the night at a hotel instead.

I rewatch your videos so often. I’ve been watching you almost everyday now for a year it seems. I watch before bed/naps, I find your videos fun but they help me calm down to sleep. Thank you for these videos.

Little Johnny "Mommy is that man sleeping in a shower curtain?" Mom says "Shh, don't point, just keep walking. Maybe he won't see us." hehe. Love this Steve, you have to hate it when the government wants you to spend thousands to pay $20 bucks a night to sleep in the woods! Take it back, and hunker down.

Once again, another great video Steve. I told my lovely wife of 42 years about the concept of this video and asked if she wanted to try it. With a simple look and no words at all, 🤨 she declined.

I don’t know whether to be appalled or amazed, but leaning towards admiration. Great to see someone not let the lack of camping gear stop him from going camping!

    1. what a unique way to camp. You always seem to come up with something different each week. 2. Tent trailers are cheaper than regular trailers, and they are easier to put them where you want them. 3. That was a fun adventure. Hunker down! 👍

"tent trailers are cheaper than regular trailers, and they are easier to put them where you want them." Indeed. But if cheap and easy to place where you want is the selling feature, why not just go with a tent? What does a tent-trailer offer that a regular tent doesn't?
