CAMPING GENERATOR PROBLEMS!

Rats! After around 10 hours of running, my beloved WEN 2000 watt generator starting smoking! No way I was going to set around a campsite full of smoke. Although I plan to use it for home power outages, I also intend on using it as a boondock power source for both my teardrop camper and my larger travel trailer. So, I had to do something. Not to worry, WEN came to the rescue! A new unit was sent out. But, how does it run? Does it smoke as well? Watch this episode to find out!

    Eight months ago I decided to buy a generator directly from WEN based on your your experience with WEN customer service. I chose the DF250i and it arrived undamaged. During break-in, the generator ran perfectly for about 15 minutes, then quit. When I attempted to restart it, the engine had zero compression. I called WEN and was talking to a live customer service rep in less than 5 minutes. He emailed me a return shipping label for the FedEx and shipped me a new generator the next day. No questions asked, no argument, no "try this-try that" BS, and no hassle. Period. The replacement genny has performed flawlessly. I am quite happy with WEN and very glad I came across your video. Thank you.

    Sir, I want to thank you, very much. I bought a WEN2350W inverter generator for my son's (12x12, 16 ft hgt "playhouse") for christmas. He was so excited to be out in his "cabin" with off-grid power and then alarmed when generator started to smoke after several evenings. I will be calling the company and am hopeful to receive the same AAA quality customer service you received! Thank You! and, much respect for your humor, your attitude, and...your rooster.

    So, I had the same issue. Turns out, they had a misprint in their manuals up until just a couple months ago. We are supposed to fill it with 15oz of oil, not 17.1. 17.1 is if the crank case has no oil in it to begin with, but they pre-fill that at their end. So fill it with only 15oz, and then it won't start to push oil through and burn/smoke.

    I feel your pain wih the rooster. We live in a very small rural town. I had been sitting by a fire in the backyards for a few nights and it was so peaceful and quiet. I thought, I need to shoot a video of this. So I get all set up, started gathering my wood, and just before I started shooting the video, right at sunset, my neighbor through the woods starting mowing his yard and his dog was not happy about it. Then about 1,000 cars drove through our sleepy little town within 30 minutes. And it seemed that most had no muffler. LOL! Needless to say, I couldn’t use all of that footage. LOL! i am about to order us a generator for our teardrop, as well. I will check out the Wens before I order one. Thanks!

    Ok. You got me. I've been deciding between larger generators the WEN 3800 and the Champion 4000. Same price. But the way the customer service was for you sold me. Plus the WEN is both electric and pull and the Champion is pull only. Problem is in in Utah. Half of my camping is above 7000 ft and the other half is below 5000 ft. They have a high altitude kit but it's 6000 ft and up. So I hope I don't have to switch back and forth all the time with the High altitude kit to get it to run good

    Thanks for your videos. The reason I don’t own a win generator and probably won’t in the future is the reliability issue they have. Search out videos on them and you’ll find enough were they failed after about 20 hours or so. My old Honda has been running for about 8 years ( so years more hours some less ) without an issue. I purchased it originally for emergencies but turn out I have a lot of uses for it. Just think your out hunting and need that generator to keep you warm throughout a cool night but it fails on the first day of a week long hunting trip. It may cost you more than the difference in price between the Win and a Honda, so if you can swing it go with the Honda. I had a feeling you were going to have an issue after seeing the first video of the generator. Good luck

    I plan on getting a 4500 WEN generator with the 4 residential plugs. I want to treat it right, so I definitely plan on doing a proper break-in. I am a research nut, but my initial thought would be I could run it straight out of the box at full load and change the oil at 50 hours..... Please don't do that. Break your new genny in properly.

    New engines require a break in procedure to properly bed in the rings.....the instructions I've seen for other generators that specify running for 30 minutes at no load doesn't work very well. You need some load on the engine to get the rings seated fully. From my experience, running for at least an hour with the eco-mode turned off, and varying the load between 30-40% and 60-80% every 10 minutes, works well. Using an small 800 (low) /1500 (high) watt heater is a convenient option. I had a Kipor IG2000P for many years, and worked with them to address some design flaws that I found, and problems I had (I'm an engineer by trade, so I like doing that kind of stuff). I had installed an hour meter on it, and when I finally sold it to get a bigger one, it had just over 1100 hours on it. I can tell you this.....if you just want something that works, and you don't have to mess with, buy Honda or Yamaha. If you're ok fixing things, and don't mind having to fiddle with your equipment, the chinese brands can be a very affordable option. The buyer just has to adjust their expectations....

    I’ve got two of these, ran them for several hours with magnetic drain plugs and a couple oil changes during. Oil on the first change even with no load was very dark and some fine dark stuff on the drain plug. After the second oil change during the break in the oil was much clearer. These definitely need a break in period. These are a great deal for the $400 I paid each for these and very quiet and lightweight.

    What caused the first Wen Genny to smoke after 10 hours is easily explained by what I found on my 56200i Wen during the day one, before the first running, take-apart-check-over and picture taking. The chances are very remote that some retired motorcycle mechanic would not only take it apart before the first startup, but would find the assembly line mistake during the valve adjustment check. To my shock I found that the 3 screws that retain the crankcase breather reed valve plate to the top underside of the valve cover were so loose, about 1 to 2 turns loose, that ALL THREE of them tilted sideways when just I touched them with the Phillips screwdriver!! Clearly they were not even finger tight -or- they just weren't tight to start with and the factory test run session further loosened them up. That was April 5th of 2018 when I called Wen Tech Support to notify them of the serious production mistake, which they gratefully understood and took seriously. What would happen if you kept running smokey Genny 1 is that the engine would quickly begin to LOUDLY CLATTER as the screws loosened up from the vibration and the breather reed valve metal plate fell down onto the rapidly oscillating rocker arms below, sounding exactly like the engine has just "blown-up". Another possibility is the intake valve seal may have "come off" or failed, allowing engine oil to be suctioned down the valve stem clearance into the intake port. BTW, I like my handsome 56200i Wen a lot more than my 2009 Yam EF2000iSC, which is slightly quieter but reacts slower to applied loads with big voltage drops (to 98V) and has replacement parts like the inverter assembly that costs almost as much as a like replacement Genny !

    My experience with Wen customer service was not at all like yours. I called, before buying, to inquire about valve adjustment. This is required maintenance on every small engine with solid lifters. (Small engines don't have hydraulic lifters, like the family car) It took 15 minutes to get an answer from someone with a strong foreign accent that I found hard to understand. He told me at first that these generator did not need valve adjustment, when I countered and told him it would be the only small engine ever made in the history of this planet that did not need valve adjustment, he backed off and told me he would get me the valve clearance numbers if I would like. I said "I would like" He told me to hold for Steve (whoever that is) I stayed on hold for 46 minutes before I got dumped into a voice mail. I don't know if it was Steve's or not. I left the information of what I was looking for and how to get in touch with me and have not heard from them since. I think I'll look at another brand

    love your build, its amazing what we can build if you have the right tools. Just wondering why not just get some lithium Batteries (they have really dropped in price) and some portable solar panels? No smoke, no changing oil, no need to keep filling it with gas, there is no noise oh and its just way cooler. I currently run 300ah of batteries with 200 watts of solar on my roof and a additional 600watts (2 300watt dokio foldable panels) on the side. I thought you were talking about a Wind generator at first, not a Wen generator.

    Hi, my first comment on youtube! I bought this generator a few days ago and have been breaking it in. If I'm in eco mode and attach an 8 amp drill and rev the drill up, the rpm's speed up . . . normal, but I also get a bit of white smoke that comes out the back. If I rev the drill a few more times, then the white smoke no longer comes out. Is that normal? Is it burning oil, or maybe steam? Don't know if I should go through the hassle of returning it; operation seems otherwise normal. Please comment and thanks!

  • @CampandCamera

    @CampandCamera

    I had that happen on my first one, so I returned it. My second one does it also, but somewhat less. I don’t know if this is correct, but I’m thinking if the motor has been running for a bit before a load is placed on it, it may just be excess fuel leaving the engine. I know in my model airplane engines, if they idle for a bit before going full throttle, they gurgle upon acceleration. However, if they only idle for a short time, they jump right to life. I suppose the carburetor loads up. I’ve been using my second WEN for a good while now and love it. For peace of mind, you could always call WEN though.

    Thanks for the reply! I phoned Wen, they gave me the name of a service company located a bit far; on phoning the service company they said that I should leave it with them and they'd get back to me . . . two trips! I asked if I could speak to someone by phone - after describing it, the repairperson said it sounded "normal". Who knows? I'd love to hear from others . . .It's only for emergency use, so I changed the oil, drained the tank and carb and put it away. Hope it works when I need it!@@CampandCamera

    No disrespect, but this is why you buy Honda or Yamaha to begin with. I just finished watching a video of a guy who picked up a Wen that was not running. His generator had been rode hard and had a broken ring that robbed it of compression. Rings were not available. He had to source a set of Honda rings that were close in size and he cut them down to fit. My fear is that one of these machines break following the expiry of the warranty and then parts aren't available. After their warranty expires, I'd be willing to bet that most of these "Budge generators" are a disposable item. I've bought too much made in China garbage to ever wan't to purposely spend my money on there. In most cases with these Chinese companies, the workers can never afford the products they build. Wen might be American based, but their products are pure slave labor. That is a problem for me.
