In this episode of Living The Van Life, my son Jaydon and I take my 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia campervan out into the Mount Baker Wilderness to do some hiking up to Bearpaw Mountain Lake for some alpine lake trout fly fishing. From there we set up camp around the van and build a campfire for some cowboy style cooking in a cast iron skillet.

Us urban dwellers cherish this 'back to the woods' experience. Makes one bring to life 'survival of the fittest' skills, to life . . . Lol ! Upon completion . . . rests a night, under the stars - after sunrise, and breakfast (and always remember, cleanup) . . . back to your vehicle for transport, back to civilization ! Ahhhh . . . . . .

Hey Chad 🤙🏽 I’m so inspired watching your channel, your demeanor and lifestyle is intoxicating...you are living my dream, lol. Also, nice to see the guidance and bonding with Jayden...those memories you create together will last a lifetime. It’s so obvious that he looks up to you, much respect. Cheers‼️
Dude. What a nice touch to bring Jaydon along. Back in the day when my son was about 4 or 5, I started to bring him along to my camping, fishing or just travelling trips. As a result of this, we forged a very strong relationship at a point that now that he is 32 and I'm 60 (almost old geezer material - hahaha) we still have a very good father and son relationship and best of all, we are best buddies. Every year we manage to leave everything and everyone aside for a couple of days for some good old fashioned father and son/best buddies travelling. Cheers and be well.

Hey welcome back Chad. This video is what I do. I don't make videos, but I know bushcraft, and survival like a pro. I go out often in my old Chevy van and practice a lot. 20 years now. I'd be happy to help ya with any questions. Like your method of fire starting. Fire starting is all in the preparation, and your choice of material for tender for sparking. Of course lighters, and matches are easiest, but a ferrocerium rod, (ferro rod) require more work, but work in all weather. Even wet. For tender, use birch bark, or pine shavings. Both have flammable oils. Now for best results, the shavings should be supper thin. Like that of a pencil sharpener. Or fluff it up with the back of your knife or something. Not cutting shavings, but scraping fluff off the pine wood stick.remove the bark first. Now birch bark, you just place it inside up on the ground, then scrape it with your blade side to side. You'll see a sawdust looking fluff that will easily take a spark. Remember, the finer the shavings, the easier it will catch a spark. Sorry brother I'm trying not to write a book. Thanks for your video I enjoyed it. See you on the next one.

Ever since I found your KZread channel I’ve not stopped watching! I enjoy watching so much! Brings back memories of my childhood camping 🏕️ Currently I’m not able to camp anymore due to my age and health issues. So I appreciate your work very much, thank you 🙏🏻
Hi Chad i am watching your videos in 2020 today is March 18 2020 learning alot . I will be starting out camping in the summer in Wildwood New Jersey to start. I am 60 years young and learning. Thank you keep on Trucking .
Nothing beats a fire and meat in the great outdoors. Good job teaching as well.
On foot, in the van, you find the best spots to camp. I enjoyed this video! Thanks for taking us along.
Word of advice, for your flint steel always try to put some magnesium shavings down (majority flit steels have some attached with them) as it helps as an accelerant or carry some dryer lint kept in a water tight container as it works as FANTASTIC kindling. Couple either with the find wooden shavings you had and you’ll be golden to get it starts much easier. Also, try using the back edge of your knife when striking as using the cutting edge will fill it out much quicker.
I have insomnia, and i always play your video before i go sleep, your video makes me relax like I'm in wilderness, thanks mate
Awesome video man! Love the cooking on cast iron. What a great way to hang out with your son too. These will be great memories for you both. Keep em' coming! Thanks for sharing
I love watching these videos: they are so relaxing. The views are epic and I can learn skills as I watch.
Yet another great video. Its good to see you out there with your boy. And what a beautiful part of the country. You are inspiring my friend.
You inspired me to pull my van out of the backyard and get that thing running again to do some van camping.A few ideas to make your camping easier. The first two things I would do go to Walmart buy yourself one of those boonie hats with the fishnet to keep yourself from getting zeka from mosquitoes. Second get yourself a magnesium stick for your fire building. One must have 3 items I have found for truck and especially van life would be a 2000 W power inverter. 1)use it to run a reciprocating saw saw Metal cutting or pruner wood blade. You can use it for cutting those trees or pallets for the campfire. 2)Coffee maker for hot water for food or one of those converted bug sprayer warm showers. 3) To run a TV and DVD player hooked into a cigarette plug FM Transmitter to give the surround sound affect through the car speakers. Note I did this in my van during lunch breaks with a smaller wattage power inverter.It was excellent. If you do decide to get yourself a power inverter what I did to save money buy a car battery jumper cables and cut off one end to attached to the power inverter. If you want to go first class cut the second off and put on high amperage quick disconnect Alexander plug.
just a small note when using firesteel dont strike it with the blade always use back of knife :)
@LivingTheVanLife

Definitely not the blade. I was using the space between the blade edge and the handle.

Best steak tip. High heat as possible. 5 min one side 5 min the other for well done. 4-5 for medium rare. 4-4 rare. DO NOT OPEN THE LID AFTER YOU FLIP/PLACE THE STEAKS. Optimum tenderness. Sprinkle both sides with salt before cooking, then as you flip add a lot of butter, garlic, and thyme. You're welcome.
