Campfire Cooking. Dutch Oven Bread with Bacon Wrapped Halloumi Cheese. Cast Iron Cooking.
In this video, Maggie and I head out to the woods to do a spot of campfire cooking.
After collecting firewood and lighting a fire to get a good bed of embers, I make a simple bread dough. After needing and proving the dough, I bake the loaf over the fire in my Dutch oven. To go with the loaf, I then pan fry some delicious smoked Halloumi cheese, wrapped in bacon - delicious!
Thank you to Kim and Cathy for sending the Halloumi and thank you to ‘A chef in the woods with coco the border collie’ for the bacon wrapping suggestion.
I hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching!

Erm.... Hold my step 2 I believe 🤣
I bought a dutch oven and am going to try this the first day my fiance and I go to the mountains. I've discovered a real love for cooking outdoors. There's something so therapeutic about it.
Love that dobro in the background. I love acoustic instruments. I used to go to as many bluegrass festivals as I could in the US. I was raised on old country music, not the stuff they call country today... I just bought an 8 quart cast iron Dutch oven. I've made bread for years at home...campfire cooking is another beast altogether...lol.

Maggie is such an adorable pupperoni 💜
My dad was a joiner and carpenter who had no boys so his 3 girls were his apprentices and he taught us a lot. Now I'm learning a whole set of new skills from you about living off the grid in hurricane season in Florida. Love learning new things from every video and having fun practicing them, Hoping my Dutch oven bread comes out half as good as yours.
Kids come back. My son is 30. We still camp. He left camping for a while but again loves it.

Just beautiful. I'm from the Caribbean and now I finally understand what my father used to say about baking outdoors long ago. He said there was fire above and below the oven and back then I had no idea what he meant. He also said it was the most delicious bread he had ever eaten. This actually looks like fun.

You have to try it out! Before working class people in Britain could afford stoves, they had a kind of Dutch Oven that fitted infront of a household fireplace and was heated from the back. I think industrial processes to make cast iron cheaply changed how we all cooked, but we've largely forgotten how now.
great vid, that bread looked spot on perfect, brilliant job. bacon and smoked cheese great combo. surrey.
I love that you are not forgetting Maggie to taste your wonderful lunch! Adding extra great memories in her life!
That jet flying overhead at the opportune time is so very funny.
Awesome, simply awesome !
Well that Q&A made me sad. Babies grown and disinterested. Wife “doesn’t get this”. Works hard, full time with very little time to just exist. Super hope there’s a lot of in between that’s full of joy, love and connection. ♥️ Hope you get more time, soon.
Wonderful ❤ man and Maggie ❤
Maggie is so adorable! Love her.
i love how bread looks cooked in an oven but in a dutch oven over a campfire it just looks like art
Hello, I enjoyed your video and learning about you and your family. I’m from the USA and have enjoyed the outdoors as long as I can remember. Im 58 with children ages 10/23/32 so I understand the kids going their own way. I do bake a lot and was quite surprised with all the yeast you used for one loaf of bread but obviously it worked quite well for you. Im currently a deployed soldier and I have a little hiding spot I go off to and do my own Chuck Wagon style cooking and baking. It keeps me going when my duty starts to get to me. Your dog is a real sweetheart. If you ever travel to the USA, we live in a log cabin in the woods. We’d love to share some good ole Midwest hospitality. Peace!
"Am I Richard's Brother?" was my Favorite part of the Video. I laughed for the rest of the video. Thank you Simon , for all the time and work put into the tips and ideas .... and yes, I'm gonna try the bread recipe.
OOOH! When you bit into that bread, and I could hear how delicious and crispy the crust was.... nothing beats fresh bread and butter!
I've been partial to a spa hotel , but I think I'd rather be in the woods with that bacon and halloumi . Delicious !
Bang on mate, Halloumi is top notch, Halloumi and chips, grill the Halloumi planks on griddle, the squeeky wounderfullness of Halloumi, first encountered it in Cyprus 1980, cheers.
We could tell by the slobber what Maggie thought of your bush lunch before she even got a bite. Good to see you and that sweet girl get out for a bit. Stay well.
Another great video, I love the little nod to yourself when you’ve triumphed over something cooked outdoors 👍👌🔥

Ok for backyard camping, but even then a bit over the top! Definitely not something a serious camper would make. Thank God for Damper!! 👍
Excellent, thanks again. Smoked halloumi-sounds like an art form.

Hey Simon, what a great video this was! I like your gentle style very much. Also liking the small and practical (amount of) gear you're using. It's super efficient and your cooking site can stay as compact as needs be. You explain very well what you do and why that is. Also the bit of personal stuff about you and your family makes this an all around gem of a survival/woodsman/cooksman video. And did I mention the choice of music? Spot on mate!
Confound farmers, think they own the place. Thanks for showing how to make Dutch oven bread cooking. I am of the opinion that good bakers are scientists and craftsmen. Good cooks are artists. You definitely have the Dutch oven bread down to a science. “And delicious, just how bread should be…now, that is spectacular!” Way to go, Simon. I enjoyed this, several times. About the Mrs., precisely the same with me and mine. Mine thinks that, roughing it, is a Holiday Inn. Again, the music in this video was GREAT! Kentucky
FINALLY! A bushcraft cook that can actually cook! Great job on the bread! Thumbs up!
Fantastic Simon! That made me hungry, and had Maggies seal of approval.. Really liked the slo motion fire starting 👌

When the kids are your age, they will remember and return to the woods (perhaps take Grandpa along to share again) ☺️
Nothing better than bacon and cheese.
Very good. If you add some water in the pot, just a handful over the dough, enough so just a tiny pool underneath which will steam and aid in final kick and crust shininess. I like your setup.

UK knife laws only allow you to carry a folding non-lock bladed knife of 3 inches or less (if I remember correctly). However, you can use larger knives to carry out certain jobs, but you can't just carry them around with you all of the time. If you look up UK knife law, you'll probably get a much more accurate description, but that is why we don't carry larger knives on our belts whilst travelling to and from where we need them, generally they're packed in the bag. Hope this helps.

@@simonablokeinthewoods On reflection, I remember some 75 or so years ago, when I was a Boy Scout, (I'm 84 now) a large sheath knife was part of our scout uniform and was proudly worn hanging from our scout belts. It was worn at all times when in scout uniform, with one exception, and that was when attending Church Parade. How times have changed!
